CHAPTER 4 — THE FATHER'S SHADOW

For several long seconds...

No one moved.

No one breathed.

The only sound inside Emily's bedroom was the soft hum of the laptop still resting on the mahogany desk.

Victoria's confession hung in the air like poison.

"It was your father."

I stared at her, searching for even the slightest hint that this was another manipulation.

Another desperate lie.

But I didn't see calculation.

I saw fear.

Real fear.

The kind that comes from speaking a truth you've spent years trying to bury.

"No," I whispered.

"My father loved Emily."

Victoria let out a bitter laugh.

"No, Daniel."

"He loved your company."

Thomas slowly lowered his weapon.

"Explain."

Victoria looked toward the locked bedroom door before answering.

"If I tell you everything..."

"They'll kill me."

Grace folded her arms.

"You should have thought about that before hurting Noah."

Victoria lowered her head.

"I never wanted to hurt him."

Grace's voice sharpened.

"You grabbed a five-year-old child hard enough to bruise him."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I know."

"And you slapped me."

"I know."

"You terrorized him."

Tears rolled silently down Victoria's face.

"I know."

For the first time...

She wasn't defending herself.

She looked broken.

Thomas unlocked the handcuffs from the chair and replaced them with flexible restraints.

"If you're going to cooperate..."

"You stay where I can see you."

She nodded without protest.

I walked toward the portrait hanging above the fireplace.

It had been painted ten years earlier.

Emily stood beside me.

One arm around Noah.

My father stood proudly behind us.

His hand rested on my shoulder.

He looked every bit the perfect patriarch.

Successful.

Respected.

Admired.

I remembered the day the portrait had been finished.

Dad had insisted it hang above the fireplace.

"The family should always be watching over this home."

Those were his words.

Now...

The portrait felt like surveillance.

Thomas interrupted my thoughts.

"Daniel."

He pointed toward the painting.

"The frame."

I looked closer.

The painting hung slightly crooked.

It hadn't been before.

Thomas carefully removed it from the wall.

Behind it...

A small black device.

No larger than a deck of cards.

A blinking green light.

Grace frowned.

"What is that?"

Thomas's expression darkened.

"A wireless surveillance transmitter."

My stomach turned.

"They've been listening."

Thomas nodded.

"For a long time."

He carefully disconnected the device.

A tiny memory card slid onto the floor.

Thomas picked it up.

"If this has recordings..."

"We'll know how long."

Back in the security office, Thomas inserted the card into a secure laptop.

Hundreds of folders appeared.

Each labeled by date.

The earliest recording...

Three years ago.

The week after Emily's funeral.

Grace gasped.

"They bugged the house..."

"...immediately after she died."

Thomas opened one recording.

The screen showed the library.

Me.

Alone.

Holding Noah.

Trying to stop him from crying.

"I want Mommy..."

Little Noah sobbed against my chest.

"I know, buddy."

"When's she coming home?"

I couldn't answer.

Instead...

I cried.

The recording continued.

Hidden microphones captured everything.

My therapy phone calls.

Private conversations with lawyers.

Business meetings.

Even Noah's bedtime stories.

Three years.

Every word.

Every secret.

Every weakness.

Someone had been watching our lives unfold.

Victoria couldn't look at the screen.

"I told them it was wrong."

Grace snapped.

"You participated."

Victoria nodded.

"I know."

Thomas opened another recording.

This one was dated...

Eight months earlier.

The day Marcus introduced Victoria to Noah.

Marcus smiled warmly.

"She's wonderful with children."

Victoria knelt beside Noah.

"Hi."

Noah hid behind me.

Marcus laughed.

"He's shy."

The recording continued.

Marcus glanced toward the hidden camera.

Then...

Almost too quickly to notice...

He winked.

Not at me.

At the camera.

Thomas paused the video.

"He knew exactly where it was."

My hands clenched into fists.

"This wasn't a relationship."

"No."

Thomas looked at me.

"It was an operation."

Another folder.

This one labeled:

PROJECT GARDIAN

Thomas frowned.

"Guardian?"

He clicked.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Psychological evaluations.

Financial reports.

Medical histories.

Everything centered around one person.

Me.

Someone had built a complete psychological profile.

My fears.

My routines.

My habits.

Even my favorite restaurants.

Grace looked horrified.

"This is stalking."

Thomas quietly corrected her.

"No."

"This is target development."

One report made my blood run cold.

Subject Weaknesses

  • Chronic guilt regarding wife's death.

  • Protective instincts toward son.

  • Difficulty trusting after bereavement.

  • Responds positively to emotional dependency.

  • Likely to remarry within 24-36 months.

At the bottom...

One sentence.

Recommended Asset: Victoria Hale.

Not Victoria Cross.

Not Victoria Lang.

Victoria Hale.

I slowly turned toward her.

"Hale."

She nodded weakly.

"Victor..."

"...is my brother."

Silence.

Grace stared.

Thomas slowly closed the laptop.

"So Victor Hale recruited his own sister."

Victoria whispered,

"I thought it was only about money."

Noah quietly tugged my jacket.

"Dad..."

I knelt beside him.

"What is it?"

He reached into the pocket of his pajamas.

"I forgot."

"What?"

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I found this under Mommy's bed."

My heart skipped.

"When?"

"The day she went to Heaven."

He handed it to me.

The paper had been folded dozens of times by tiny hands.

I carefully unfolded it.

Inside...

Emily's handwriting.

Just one sentence.

If Daniel ever finds this...

Don't trust your father.

Below the sentence...

A series of numbers.

Thomas immediately recognized them.

"Those aren't random."

"What are they?"

He looked directly at me.

"They're a bank safe-deposit box."

Grace whispered,

"Emily hid something."

Thomas nodded.

"And whatever she hid..."

"...she believed your father would never be allowed to find."

Before anyone could speak again—

A loud explosion shook the entire mansion.

The windows shattered.

Smoke poured across the front lawn.

Thomas rushed to the monitor connected to the emergency backup camera.

The main gate...

Was on fire.

One of the security guards shouted from downstairs.

"They're attacking the estate!"

Then another voice came over the emergency radio.

Panicked.

"They've breached the east wall!"

Thomas looked at me.

"They're coming for the safe-deposit key."

I looked down at Emily's note still trembling in my hand.

For the first time...

I realized this had never been about Noah's inheritance alone.

May you like

Emily had hidden something powerful enough...

To make armed men attack my home in broad daylight.
