Chapter 9 - The Family Secret
The biggest discovery came from someone I never expected.
My grandmother.
Teresa’s own mother.
She contacted me after hearing about the lawsuit.
“I should have told you years ago,” she said.
We met quietly at a small café outside town.
She looked older than I remembered.
Tired.
Broken.
“I thought Teresa would change.”
I listened.
And then she told me the truth.
Teresa had always been obsessed with appearances.
When she was younger, she wanted people to believe she was wealthy.
Successful.
Important.
But behind closed doors, she struggled financially.
“She borrowed money constantly,” my grandmother explained.
“She cared more about looking powerful than actually building something.”
That explained everything.
The expensive clothes.
The fake confidence.
The need to control everyone around her.
“She couldn’t accept that you built the life she wanted.”
I looked down.
“So she tried to take mine.”
My grandmother nodded.
“Yes.”
Before I left, she gave me an old box.
Inside were letters.
Letters Teresa had written years ago.
I read one sentence that made my heart stop.
“One day Connor will understand that everything he has belongs to me.”
I closed the letter.
