Chapter 11 - The Attack After the Victory

I thought winning the first legal battle would bring peace.
I was wrong.
People always say the truth sets you free.
But they never tell you what happens after the truth comes out.
The damage doesn’t disappear.
The broken trust doesn’t magically repair itself.
And the people who built their lives on lies don’t simply walk away.
Three weeks after the court hearing, Teresa disappeared from the public eye.
No phone calls.
No messages.
No angry visits.
For the first time in my life, my mother was silent.
And somehow, that scared me more.
Daniel noticed it too.
“People like Teresa don’t stop because they lose,” he said.
“They stop because they are planning.”
I hated that he was right.
Every morning before work, I checked the locks twice.
Every unknown number made me nervous.
Every car slowing near our house caught my attention.
Amy noticed.
“You’re still fighting a battle that ended.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I’m fighting the one that hasn’t started yet.”
Then one afternoon, I received an email.
The subject line made my heart stop.
NOTICE OF CLAIM AGAINST BRADLEY CONSTRUCTION GROUP
I opened it.
And my blood ran cold.
Someone was claiming ownership rights over part of my company.
The person filing the claim?
Teresa Bradley.
My own mother.
The next morning, Daniel came to my office.
He looked serious.
“She found another way in.”
“What does that mean?”
He placed a folder on my desk.
“She’s claiming you transferred company rights to her years ago.”
I opened the file.
Inside was another document.
Another signature.
Another fake.
I stared at it.
“How many fake documents did she create?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
“Connor…”
His voice became quieter.
“This goes back further than we thought.”
I looked at him.
“What are you saying?”
“We need to investigate your entire financial history.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because deep down, I already knew.

The birthday party wasn’t the beginning.
It was just the moment I finally saw it.
