Chapter 8 - Mason’s Secret

Mason was the person I struggled to understand the most.
He was my cousin.
Someone I grew up with.
Someone who attended family dinners.
Someone who held my son at the birthday party.
And yet he was helping my mother steal from me.
Daniel arranged a meeting.
Mason arrived looking exhausted.
He didn’t look like the confident man who had tried to escape with my house documents.
He looked scared.
“I never wanted this to happen,” he said.
I stared at him.
“Then why did you help her?”
He looked down.
“Because I owed her.”
“Owed her what?”
Mason swallowed.
“My entire life.”
He explained that years earlier, Teresa had helped his family financially after his father lost his job.
But that help came with conditions.
“She never helped anyone for free.”
Mason admitted Teresa had been controlling him for years.
She threatened to expose his past mistakes.
She threatened to cut him off financially.
“She told me if I didn’t help her, she would ruin me.”
I felt anger and sympathy at the same time.
“You still chose to hurt my family.”
“I know.”
His voice cracked.
“I’m sorry.”
Then he revealed something important.
“The house wasn’t the only thing she wanted.”
I looked at him.
“What else?”
“She wanted your company shares.”
My blood froze.
“My company?”
Mason nodded.
“She believed your construction business would make you rich.”
The plan was bigger than I imagined.
