Chapter 18 - The Truth Everyone Heard

The final evidence was the recording from Teresa and Mason.
The courtroom speakers played her voice.
“When Connor signs, everything becomes ours.”
The room froze.
No one could deny it anymore.
Not my relatives.
Not the court.
Not even Teresa.
The judge delivered the decision.
The fake documents were declared invalid.
The property remained under my ownership.
The financial accounts were returned.
The company claims were dismissed.
And Teresa faced criminal investigation for fraud and document forgery.
But the legal victory wasn’t the part that mattered most.
It was what happened afterward.
Outside the courtroom, my aunt Betsy approached Amy.
For a long time, neither woman spoke.
Then Betsy whispered:
“I was wrong.”
Amy looked at her.
“You watched.”
Betsy lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
“And I’ll never forget that.”
Betsy nodded.
“I understand.”
It wasn’t forgiveness.
Not yet.
But it was the first honest thing anyone in my family had said in months.
Later that evening, I received one final message from Teresa.
I almost deleted it.
But I opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
“After everything I did for you, you chose strangers over your own mother.”
I stared at the screen.
Then I typed my response.
“I didn’t choose strangers.”
“I chose my family.”

I turned off my phone.
And for the first time in months, I slept peacefully.
