Chapter 12 - The Father I Never Knew

The investigation uncovered something I never expected.

My father.

For years, I believed my father abandoned us.

That was the story Teresa told me.

“He left because he didn’t care.”

“He chose another life.”

“He never wanted responsibility.”

I grew up believing those words.

But Daniel found records that changed everything.

My father hadn’t disappeared.

He had been trying to contact me.

Letters.

Emails.

Financial records.

All ignored.

All hidden.

By Teresa.

I stared at the documents on my desk.

“She blocked him from reaching me?”

Daniel nodded.

“According to these records, yes.”

My hands started shaking.

My entire childhood had been built on a lie.

I called the number Daniel found.

I didn’t know what to expect.

A stranger?

An angry man?

Someone who didn’t care?

Instead, an older voice answered.

“Hello?”

I couldn’t speak.

After a few seconds, he said:

“Connor?”

That one word broke something inside me.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then I heard him breathe.

“My son.”

I closed my eyes.

I hadn’t heard that voice in twenty-eight years.

We met three days later.

His name was Michael.

He looked older than I imagined.

But his eyes were familiar.

My eyes.

“I tried to find you,” he said.

“I swear I tried.”

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted answers.

But seeing the pain on his face made it difficult.

“Why didn’t you come?”

He looked down.

“Because your mother convinced everyone I was dangerous.”

My heart sank.

Another lie.

Another piece of control.

Before we left, Michael gave me something.

A box.

Inside were photos of me as a baby.

Letters he had written but never sent.

And one document.

A document showing he had placed money into an account for me when I was born.

Money Teresa had taken.

Money that had disappeared.

The pattern was becoming clear.

Teresa had been controlling my life since before I was old enough to understand.
