CHAPTER 9 — THE FINAL DEFENSE PROTOCOL

The entire underground complex trembled.
A deep metallic roar echoed through the ancient foundations beneath the Grand Alcazar Hotel.
It wasn't an explosion.
It was something far older.
Far heavier.
A hidden mechanism, dormant for decades, had awakened.
Throughout the archive, red emergency lights abruptly turned blue.
A calm computerized voice filled every corridor.
Final Defense Protocol Activated.
Founder Authorization Confirmed.
Rossi Family Priority Status Engaged.
All non-authorized personnel will be contained.
Victor Keller stopped walking.
For the first time since Julian had seen him again...
The old doctor looked genuinely alarmed.
"What did Alessandro build?"
One of his engineers stared at the control tablet in horror.
"I... I don't know."
The engineer frantically typed commands.
Nothing responded.
"They've taken control of the entire underground network."
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"No."
"Alessandro is dead."
A cold mechanical voice answered him through hidden speakers.
Correction.
Founder Deceased.
Founder Protocol Active.
The lights dimmed.
Then massive steel partitions slammed down throughout the facility.
Victor and half of his operatives were suddenly cut off from the others.
"What is happening?"
"No signal!"
"The elevators are locked!"
"Our communications are dead!"
Panic spread through the assault team.
Victor remained motionless.
Then he whispered to himself,
"You planned this..."
"...even after death."
Inside the Emergency Clinic
The walls vibrated again.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Camila steadied the surgical light while Julian stood frozen, the scalpel trembling in his gloved hand.
His tailored suit had been replaced by sterile surgical clothing.
But he was still a businessman.
Not a doctor.
The tablet beside him displayed Dr. Gabriella Moretti's prerecorded instructions.
The screen detected movement.
The surgeon looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...you're frightened."
Julian let out a slow breath.
"That's an understatement."
The recording continued.
"You don't need to become a surgeon."
"You only need to become a husband who refuses to give up."
Julian glanced at Elena.
She was exhausted.
Her lips were pale.
Sweat soaked her hair.
But when she looked at him...
She smiled.
"I trust you."
Those three words settled something deep inside him.
His hands stopped shaking.
Elena's Strength
Another contraction ripped through her body.
She cried out.
Julian immediately took her hand.
"I'm here."
She squeezed weakly.
"Do you remember..."
"Our honeymoon?"
Julian blinked.
"Now?"
She nodded faintly.
"You promised..."
"...that if life ever became impossible..."
"...we would survive it together."
Julian kissed her forehead.
"I meant every word."
"So did I."
The First Incision
Camila followed the tablet carefully.
"Julian."
"Three centimeters lower."
His breathing remained steady.
He looked only at Elena.
Not the blood.
Not the instruments.
Only her.
"I'm sorry."
She whispered,
"Don't apologize."
"I know whose hands are holding me."
Julian made the first incision.
His heart nearly stopped.
Camila calmly guided him.
"Good."
"Keep going."
The room fell silent except for Elena's breathing...
...and the steady heartbeat echoing from the fetal monitor.
Then—
The monitor screamed.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Twin A Heart Rate Critical
Camila's face changed.
"We're almost out of time."
The Hidden Defense
Elsewhere in the archive...
Victor's men attempted to cut through another blast door.
The moment the torch touched the steel...
Hidden defense systems activated.
High-pressure foam erupted from the ceiling.
Within seconds, the corridor filled with dense white suppressant foam.
Visibility dropped to zero.
The operatives shouted.
"I can't see!"
"My mask!"
Another engineer screamed.
"The walls are moving!"
Ancient stone panels shifted silently.
The corridors themselves were changing.
Alessandro hadn't merely hidden the archive.
He had built a labyrinth.
One designed to trap intruders forever.
Victor stared into the white fog.
"Find another route."
"There isn't one."
"There has to be."
The engineer shook his head.
"The building is rewriting its own floor plan."
Victor's calm façade cracked.
For the first time...
He realized Alessandro Rossi had expected betrayal decades before it happened.
The First Cry
Back inside the clinic...
Camila reached carefully.
"I see the baby."
Julian could barely breathe.
Elena whispered,
"Our son..."
Camila smiled through tears.
"No..."
She looked up.
"It's a girl."
Julian gently lifted the tiny infant into the light.
For one terrifying second...
She didn't move.
No sound.
No breath.
The room froze.
Julian's entire world narrowed to that impossibly small face.
"Why isn't she crying?"
Camila immediately cleared the baby's airway.
"Come on..."
"Come on..."
One second.
Two.
Three.
Then—
A tiny gasp.
Followed by a loud, powerful cry.
The sound echoed through the hidden clinic.
Elena burst into tears.
Julian laughed and cried at the same time.
"Our daughter..."
He wrapped her carefully in a warm blanket.
"Hello, little miracle."
The newborn immediately gripped his finger with astonishing strength.
Julian couldn't stop smiling.
"She's fighting already."
Elena whispered,
"She gets that from you."
No Time to Celebrate
The joy lasted only seconds.
Another alarm blared.
Twin B Heart Rate Falling Rapidly
Camila looked back toward Elena.
"The second baby is in trouble."
Julian carefully handed their daughter to Elena.
She kissed the baby's forehead.
"I love you."
Then looked at Julian.
"Bring our other baby home."
Victor's Last Card
Meanwhile...
Victor finally reached a hidden emergency terminal.
He inserted an encrypted key.
The old system accepted it.
A cruel smile slowly returned.
"So..."
"You left one weakness."
He typed a command.
Deep beneath the archive...
Backup generators shut down one after another.
The emergency clinic flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then darkness swallowed the room.
Only battery-powered monitors remained illuminated.
Camila looked at the ceiling.
"No..."
"The surgical lights!"
The ventilation stopped.
Medical equipment began switching to emergency power.
Julian's face hardened.
"What did he do?"
Camila answered quietly.
"He just turned this operating room into a race against time."
The battery monitor flashed.
Emergency Power Remaining: 14 Minutes
Julian looked down at Elena.
Then at their newborn daughter.
Then at the monitor tracking Twin B.
He picked up the scalpel again.
Outside...
Victor Keller placed one hand against the cold steel wall and whispered,
May you like
"One child is enough."
Then he pressed the final override button.
