CHAPTER 15 — BROTHERS IN THE FIRE

The hallway exploded into chaos.

Gunfire erupted from both ends of the corridor, bullets tearing splinters from the mahogany walls of Villa Rossi.

Julian instinctively shielded Elena and the twins.

Adrian stepped forward without hesitation.

His pistol came up in one smooth motion.

Bang! Bang!

Two masked attackers collapsed before they could fire another round.

Marco Bianchi shouted from behind an overturned marble table.

"Move! I'll hold the corridor!"

Julian looked at Adrian.

"You know how to fight."

Adrian didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the advancing mercenaries.

"I was trained to."

Another burst of automatic fire forced them back into cover.

The Safe Room

Marco keyed the emergency code into the hidden steel door.

Massive hydraulic locks disengaged.

The wall slid open, revealing a reinforced underground shelter.

"Inside!"

Julian helped Elena through the entrance while she clutched Isabella and Alessandro tightly against her chest.

The babies, exhausted from the day's ordeal, remained asleep despite the distant explosions.

Adrian was the last to enter.

The steel door slammed shut just as dozens of bullets struck its outer surface.

Silence returned.

Only the heavy breathing of those inside broke the stillness.

The Truth Between Brothers

For several long moments, Julian simply stared at Adrian.

The resemblance was undeniable.

The same gray-blue eyes.

The same strong jawline.

Even the way Adrian folded his arms reminded Julian of Alessandro Rossi.

Julian finally spoke.

"Who are you?"

Adrian reached into his jacket slowly.

Marco immediately raised his weapon.

"Easy."

Adrian removed a worn leather wallet.

Inside was an old photograph.

It showed Alessandro holding two little boys.

One was Julian.

The other...

A toddler with bright eyes laughing in his father's arms.

Julian frowned.

"I've never seen this."

"You weren't supposed to."

Adrian's voice remained calm.

"Leonard Ashcroft burned every photograph that proved I existed."

The Night of the Fire

Adrian sat quietly.

"I was four."

"I don't remember much."

"I remember smoke."

"I remember our mother screaming."

"I remember someone carrying me."

He closed his eyes.

"When I woke up..."

"...Leonard told me my family had abandoned me."

Julian felt his chest tighten.

"He said Father chose to save me."

Adrian nodded.

"He spent twenty-six years repeating the same lie."

"He made me believe Alessandro sacrificed one son to protect another."

Elena whispered softly,

"He raised you to hate your own family."

Adrian smiled bitterly.

"Hatred was the only language I was taught."

Project Phoenix

Julian looked at the classified folder Adrian had brought.

"What is Project Phoenix?"

Adrian pushed it across the table.

"It isn't a military program."

"It never was."

Julian opened the file.

The first page froze him.

PROJECT PHOENIX

Objective: Create the Perfect Successor

There were psychological evaluations.

Combat records.

Educational transcripts.

Medical reports.

Every page belonged to Adrian.

Leonard hadn't merely adopted him.

He had engineered him.

The boy had been trained from childhood to become the future leader of the Obsidian Circle.

Languages.

Economics.

Cyberwarfare.

Psychology.

Weapons.

Corporate strategy.

Everything.

Julian slowly looked up.

"He turned you into a weapon."

Adrian answered quietly.

"I didn't know I had another choice."

Camila's Arrival

Above them, the sounds of battle continued.

Then...

Three quick knocks echoed against the safe room door.

Marco immediately aimed his rifle.

"Password!"

A weak female voice answered.

"Truth... survives."

Julian smiled.

"Open it."

The door slid back.

Camila stumbled inside, supported by two of Marco's security officers.

Her shoulder was heavily bandaged.

She looked exhausted.

But alive.

"I brought company."

Behind her stepped an elderly priest wearing a simple black cassock.

Julian recognized him instantly.

"Father Gabriel."

The old priest had baptized Julian decades earlier.

He had also been Alessandro Rossi's closest friend.

Father Gabriel looked directly at Adrian.

His eyes filled with tears.

"My God..."

"You have your mother's eyes."

Alessandro's Last Confession

Father Gabriel removed a sealed envelope from inside his coat.

"I promised Alessandro I would only deliver this if both of his sons stood together."

Julian's heart skipped.

He slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My Sons,

If this letter has reached you, then the lie separating you has finally ended.

Julian...

Adrian...

Everything I did was to keep both of you alive.

Leonard discovered Adrian's extraordinary intelligence when he was only four years old. He wanted to mold him into his heir. I tried to stop him. I failed.

The fire that destroyed our home wasn't an accident. It was an abduction.

I saved Julian because he was closest to me.

I couldn't reach Adrian in time.

That failure haunted me every day until my last breath.

Please don't waste the years that were stolen from you.

Stand together.

Because divided... you can be defeated.

Together... you become everything Leonard fears.

— Your Father

Silence filled the room.

Julian folded the letter carefully.

Then he walked toward Adrian.

Neither man spoke.

No apology could recover twenty-six stolen years.

No explanation could erase a lifetime of loneliness.

Julian simply opened his arms.

For several seconds...

Adrian didn't move.

Then...

Very slowly...

He stepped forward.

The two brothers embraced.

Neither tried to hide the tears.

Elena quietly looked away, allowing them their moment.

Father Gabriel whispered,

"Alessandro finally has peace."

Leonard's Fury

Hundreds of miles away, inside his Geneva estate, Leonard Ashcroft watched live drone footage of the failed assault.

One by one, his mercenaries were being arrested.

Others had fled.

The operation had collapsed.

His chief of security entered the room.

"Sir..."

"Adrian has defected."

Leonard remained silent.

The crystal wineglass in his hand shattered under the pressure of his grip.

Blood trickled across his fingers.

"He chose them."

The security chief nodded.

Leonard slowly smiled.

Not with warmth.

With cold calculation.

"No."

"He chose hope."

He walked toward the enormous window overlooking the lake.

"Hope..."

"...is far easier to destroy than loyalty."

He turned.

"Prepare the aircraft."

"Where are we going?"

Leonard's eyes darkened.

"To Italy."

"It's time I ended this myself."

A New Mission

Back inside the safe room, Marco received an urgent transmission.

His face turned serious.

"Julian."

"What is it?"

"Interpol has located Leonard's private jet."

"Where?"

"It just crossed into Italian airspace."

Adrian immediately stood.

"He's coming."

Julian nodded.

"Good."

Adrian looked at his brother.

"You don't sound worried."

Julian glanced toward Elena and the twins.

Then back at Adrian.

"For months..."

"We've been running."

He slowly chambered a round into his pistol.

"That ends tonight."

Adrian smiled for the first time.

A genuine smile.

"Then let's finish what Father started."

The two brothers stood side by side.

Not as strangers.

Not as rivals.

May you like

But as family.

Ready to face the man who had stolen half their lives.
