CHAPTER 8 — THE FIRST CRY

The monitor erupted into a shrill alarm.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
A bright red warning flashed across the screen.
TWIN A — FETAL DISTRESS
Heart Rate Critical
Immediate Cesarean Delivery Required
Julian's blood ran cold.
Elena doubled over, gripping the edge of the bed with trembling hands.
Another contraction tore through her body.
She screamed.
Not from fear.
From unbearable pain.
Camila rushed to the monitor.
"We're losing the baby."
Julian grabbed her shoulders.
"Tell me what to do."
Camila swallowed hard.
"I'm not an obstetrician."
"You've got to be kidding."
"I was trained as a trauma medic."
She looked around the hidden clinic.
"There has to be someone..."
Her voice trailed off.
No one was coming.
The only doctor who had known the facility...
Sophia...
...had sacrificed herself.
Alessandro's Final Gift
Julian looked toward the wall of emergency cabinets.
One locker blinked with a green light.
Above it, a small brass plaque read:
AUTHORIZED FOR FAMILY EMERGENCIES
He pressed his thumb against the scanner.
The cabinet unlocked.
Inside was a sealed medical case.
A tablet powered on automatically.
A prerecorded video appeared.
Alessandro Rossi filled the screen.
"If you're opening this cabinet..."
"...then someone I love is fighting for their life."
His eyes softened.
"I prayed this day would never come."
The screen changed to a middle-aged woman wearing surgical scrubs.
Professor Dr. Gabriella Moretti
One of Europe's leading maternal-fetal surgeons.
Julian recognized the name instantly.
She had pioneered emergency obstetric techniques used around the world.
Alessandro's recorded voice continued.
"Gabriella agreed to prepare emergency medical protocols for every Rossi safe house."
The tablet displayed step-by-step surgical instructions.
Camila stared in disbelief.
"He prepared for this..."
Julian whispered,
"My father prepared for everything."
Elena's Promise
Elena reached weakly for Julian's hand.
Her skin felt ice cold.
"Listen to me..."
"I'm listening."
"If something happens..."
"It won't."
She shook her head.
"Please."
Her voice cracked.
"If you have to choose..."
Julian's eyes filled with tears.
"Don't."
"Choose the babies."
He immediately answered.
"I choose all three of you."
"You can't."
"I will."
She smiled weakly.
"You've always been stubborn."
"And you've always underestimated me."
For the first time in months...
She laughed.
A tiny laugh.
Barely audible.
But real.
The Breach
A violent explosion shook the archive.
Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.
Camila checked the surveillance feed.
"They've broken through the first blast door."
Victor Keller calmly walked through the smoke.
Behind him...
Dozens of heavily armed operatives advanced with military precision.
They weren't rushing.
They weren't nervous.
They knew Julian had nowhere to go.
Victor looked directly into another security camera.
"Three minutes."
His voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"That's all the time you have."
A Hidden Defender
Suddenly...
Another monitor activated by itself.
A security camera showed the outer corridor.
A lone figure stepped into view.
Blood stained her white blouse.
One arm hung uselessly at her side.
Yet she still held a pistol.
Sophia.
Alive.
Barely.
But alive.
Camila gasped.
"No..."
Sophia locked the reinforced blast door manually.
Then she smiled weakly at the security camera.
"For Dad..."
she whispered.
She pulled a lever.
Massive steel barricades crashed into place throughout the tunnel.
Victor's men were forced to stop.
One operative shouted,
"The entire corridor has sealed!"
Victor's expression darkened for the first time.
"Override it."
"It can't be overridden."
"Why not?"
"It requires Rossi family authorization."
Victor slowly closed his eyes.
Sophia had bought them time.
Labor
Elena screamed again.
The contractions were now less than two minutes apart.
The monitor suddenly changed.
Another warning appeared.
Twin B — Heart Rate Falling
Camila looked horrified.
"Both babies are crashing."
Julian felt helpless.
Every business crisis.
Every negotiation.
Every hostile takeover...
None of it mattered here.
Money couldn't save Elena.
Power couldn't stop childbirth.
For the first time in his adult life...
He was completely powerless.
The Letter
While searching for medical supplies, Camila found another envelope beneath the surgical tray.
It bore Elena's handwriting.
If I Don't Survive
Julian stared at it.
His hands trembled.
"I can't."
Camila quietly placed it into his hands.
"You may have to."
Julian slowly opened the letter.
My Julian,
If you're reading this...
then our children are already in your arms.
Please don't let them grow up hating the world because of what happened to us.
Teach them kindness before revenge.
Teach them courage before power.
Tell them I loved them before I ever heard their voices.
And tell them...
their father never stopped searching for me.
That thought kept me alive every single day.
I never believed you abandoned me.
Not even once.
I knew...
you'd come.
Love always,
Elena
Julian couldn't stop the tears.
He kissed her forehead gently.
"You are going to tell them yourself."
The Impossible Decision
The tablet suddenly displayed another emergency message.
Natural delivery no longer possible.
Emergency surgery required within eight minutes.
Camila looked at Julian.
"I can guide you."
Julian stared at her.
"What?"
"The tablet contains live surgical instructions."
"You expect me to operate on my own wife?"
"I expect you to save her."
Julian looked at Elena.
She nodded.
"I trust you."
"I've never held a scalpel."
"You've held my heart for five years."
Her weak smile returned.
"I know your hands."
"You won't let us go."
The Last Barrier Falls
Outside...
Victor finally smiled again.
One of his engineers approached.
"We've bypassed the emergency locks."
The massive blast door slowly began opening.
Victor checked his watch.
"They've run out of time."
He looked at the soldiers behind him.
"When the doors open..."
"Secure the archive."
"Recover the twins."
"If Elena Rossi resists..."
He didn't even finish the sentence.
He simply made a slicing motion across his throat.
Every operative understood.
No witnesses.
A Father's Resolve
Inside the hidden clinic...
Julian scrubbed his hands.
Pulled on sterile gloves.
His breathing steadied.
Fear gave way to focus.
Not because he suddenly believed he was a surgeon.
But because he had no other choice.
He looked into Elena's eyes.
"I made you a promise on our wedding day."
She squeezed his fingers.
"You did."
"I said I'd protect you."
"You already have."
"No."
Julian picked up the scalpel.
"I'm only just beginning."
At that exact moment...
The first blast door exploded inward.
Smoke flooded the outer hallway.
Victor Keller stepped through the flames.
He smiled as he heard Elena cry out in labor.
May you like
Then he calmly gave the order.
"Take the children."
