CHAPTER 17 — THE CHOICE THAT BROKE THE TRAP

The live feed on Julian's phone shook violently.

A masked gunman stood in the nursery at Villa Rossi.

His rifle was aimed directly at Elena.

She held Isabella tightly against her chest while little Alessandro slept against her shoulder, completely unaware of the danger surrounding him.

Julian's hands tightened around the steering wheel.

"Marco!"

His voice thundered through the encrypted line.

"What happened?"

Static crackled.

Then Marco answered between bursts of gunfire.

"They came through the old wine tunnels."

"They bypassed the perimeter."

Julian's heart sank.

"The children?"

"They're alive."

"So far."

Another explosion echoed through the call.

Then...

The connection died.

Leonard's Game

Julian's phone vibrated again.

A video call.

Unknown number.

He accepted.

Leonard Ashcroft appeared on the screen, standing inside the ancient sanctuary of San Michele Cathedral.

Behind him, stained-glass windows glowed with the first light of dawn.

His expression was calm.

Almost grandfatherly.

"You've always been predictable, Julian."

Julian said nothing.

Leonard smiled.

"You've stopped the car."

"You've looked at the camera feed."

"And now you're asking yourself one impossible question."

Julian's voice was ice.

"What do you want?"

"The same thing I've wanted for forty years."

Leonard held up a small silver device.

"The Archive Keys."

Julian reached into his coat.

The encrypted key drive Alessandro had hidden rested safely inside.

"If I hand them over..."

"You let my family go?"

Leonard chuckled softly.

"You still believe negotiations work with men like me?"

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"Then why ask?"

"Because..."

Leonard leaned closer to the camera.

"...while you're talking to me..."

"...you're not watching the road."

Julian instinctively looked up.

A black armored truck burst from a side street.

It slammed into the front of his SUV.

Metal screamed.

Glass exploded.

The vehicle spun twice before crashing through a stone barrier.

The Ambush

Smoke filled the air.

Julian's forehead struck the steering wheel.

Blood trickled down his temple.

Before he could recover, four masked mercenaries surrounded the wreck.

One smashed the driver's window.

"Out!"

Julian didn't move.

The mercenary reached inside.

That was his mistake.

Julian grabbed the man's wrist.

Twisted sharply.

Crack!

The pistol fell.

Julian rolled from the SUV, using the attacker as a shield.

Gunfire erupted.

Two mercenaries accidentally struck their own man.

Julian returned fire with quick, controlled shots.

Years of executive boardrooms had hidden another truth.

Alessandro had trained his son long before teaching him business.

Not to become a soldier.

But to survive one.

Within seconds...

Two attackers were down.

The others retreated behind the armored truck.

Villa Rossi

At the estate...

Marco's security team fought room by room.

The attackers weren't trying to occupy the villa.

They were searching.

One operative shouted,

"Find the children!"

Another answered,

"They're not in the nursery!"

The room was empty.

Only overturned furniture remained.

Elena had disappeared.

Elena's Decision

Minutes earlier...

The moment the alarm sounded, Elena had refused Marco's order to stay inside the panic room.

Instead...

She carried both twins through a forgotten servants' passage hidden behind the library.

Sophia had shown it to her months before.

The narrow tunnel led beneath the gardens toward the estate chapel.

Father Gabriel waited there.

He opened the old wooden door.

"Quickly."

Elena hurried inside.

The old priest immediately locked the entrance.

He looked at the sleeping babies.

"They'll never find you here."

Elena wasn't convinced.

"No."

"They always find us."

Adrian Hunts Alone

Several miles away...

Adrian ignored Julian's instructions.

He tracked Leonard's encrypted communications using equipment recovered from the archive.

A blinking signal appeared.

Not at the cathedral.

Another location.

An abandoned monastery overlooking the city.

Adrian frowned.

"A relay."

He finally understood.

Leonard was broadcasting from the cathedral...

But commanding the attack from somewhere else.

"It was never about the meeting."

It was about dividing the family.

Adrian immediately turned the motorcycle toward the monastery.

"If I stop him there..."

"...Julian can save Elena."

The Cathedral

Julian finally reached San Michele Cathedral.

The ancient building stood silent beneath the pale morning sky.

Its enormous wooden doors were already open.

No guards.

No movement.

Only silence.

He stepped inside.

Candles flickered beneath centuries-old stone arches.

Leonard stood alone before the altar.

His hands rested on an old wooden cane.

"You came."

Julian walked forward.

"You expected me to."

"I expected a father."

Julian stopped several feet away.

"You don't know the first thing about fathers."

Leonard's smile faded.

"I know enough to understand they're willing to die."

Julian answered quietly,

"Yes."

"They are."

"But they'll also kill to protect their children."

The Confession

Leonard slowly removed an old photograph from his pocket.

It showed Alessandro Rossi standing beside him decades earlier.

"We were friends once."

Julian stared silently.

"We built dreams together."

Leonard's voice carried genuine sadness.

"We wanted to reshape the world."

"What happened?"

"You father discovered there were lines I would cross..."

"...that he never could."

Leonard looked toward the stained-glass ceiling.

"He called it evil."

"I called it necessary."

Julian answered,

"You called murder progress."

Leonard sighed.

"History is always written by survivors."

Julian slowly removed the Archive Keys.

"They've already seen your history."

"And they'll judge it."

Adrian's Discovery

The abandoned monastery stood hidden among ancient olive trees.

Adrian quietly entered through a collapsed stone wall.

Inside...

Dozens of computer servers hummed beneath the ruined chapel.

Satellite transmitters.

Encrypted communications.

A complete command center.

And standing before the largest screen...

A woman.

She turned slowly.

Adrian froze.

"No..."

She smiled gently.

"You've grown."

Adrian's voice barely existed.

"Mother?"

The woman looked exactly like the memories he had recovered.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same silver pendant around her neck.

She took one slow step forward.

"My son..."

"I've waited twenty-six years."

Adrian felt his world collapsing.

Every instinct told him to run.

Every childhood memory begged him to believe her.

Then...

He noticed something.

Her left wrist.

A tattoo.

The black phoenix symbol of the Obsidian Circle.

His real mother had never worn one.

Adrian quietly lowered his weapon.

"You aren't my mother."

The woman's smile vanished.

"No."

May you like

She reached beneath her coat.

"But I raised the man who killed her."
