CHAPTER 18 — THE FALL OF THE PHOENIX

The gunshot shattered the silence inside the abandoned monastery.

Bang!

Adrian moved on instinct.

The bullet grazed his shoulder, tearing through his jacket before embedding itself in the stone wall behind him.

Pain exploded through his left arm.

But he stayed on his feet.

The woman lowered the suppressed pistol with a disappointed smile.

"Faster than I expected."

Adrian raised his own weapon.

"Who are you?"

She tilted her head.

"You spent twenty-six years calling me Mother."

"My name never mattered."

"It was erased... just like yours."

The Woman Called Eva

She slowly removed the silver pendant from around her neck.

Inside was a faded photograph.

Adrian immediately recognized it.

It was the same picture Leonard had shown him throughout his childhood.

Only this version was complete.

His real mother.

Alessandro.

Julian.

And himself.

The woman smiled coldly.

"My name is Eva Novak."

"I supervised Project Phoenix."

Adrian's heartbeat slowed.

"You stole me."

"No."

Eva corrected him.

"We rescued you."

She took another step.

"Your father chose Julian."

"We chose you."

Adrian's voice hardened.

"You murdered my mother."

Eva's smile disappeared.

"No."

"Leonard did."

The words echoed through the ruined monastery.

For years...

Leonard had blamed Alessandro.

Blamed Julian.

Blamed fate.

Now...

The truth stood before Adrian.

Leonard himself had ordered the murder.

The Cathedral Collapses

At the exact same moment...

Inside San Michele Cathedral...

The ancient marble floor split apart.

Stone cracked beneath Julian's feet.

He jumped backward as an entire section of the sanctuary collapsed into darkness.

Leonard remained perfectly calm.

"I told you..."

"You always choose the obvious path."

Julian realized too late.

The cathedral itself had been rigged.

Steel pillars hidden beneath the foundation retracted one after another.

Massive sections of the building began sinking inward.

Dust filled the air.

Centuries-old stained-glass windows shattered.

The bells above rang wildly before crashing through the ceiling.

Leonard calmly stepped onto a hidden steel platform rising beneath the altar.

"You inherited Alessandro's heart."

He smiled sadly.

"Unfortunately..."

"...you never inherited his suspicion."

The platform slowly descended into the darkness below.

Julian sprinted toward it.

"Leonard!"

The old man looked up one last time.

"You'll find me..."

"...when you finally stop thinking like a son..."

"...and start thinking like your father."

Then he disappeared underground.

The platform vanished.

The stone sealed shut.

It was as though Leonard had never been there.

Elena Refuses to Hide

Back beneath Villa Rossi...

Father Gabriel secured the chapel door.

"We stay here."

Elena looked at the frightened infants sleeping against her chest.

Then she heard distant explosions.

Julian.

Her heart knew.

Something had gone terribly wrong.

She looked at Father Gabriel.

"I can't stay."

"You must."

"If Julian is fighting alone..."

"...then I'm already too late."

The old priest stepped in front of the door.

"You have two newborn children."

She nodded.

"And they deserve parents."

Without another word...

She gently placed Isabella into Father Gabriel's arms.

Then Alessandro.

"If I don't come back..."

He interrupted firmly.

"You will."

She smiled through tears.

"Please protect them."

Before he could answer...

She was already gone.

Adrian Learns Everything

Inside the monastery...

Eva slowly lowered her weapon.

"There is no reason to kill you anymore."

Adrian frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Leonard already has Julian."

She walked toward one of the massive computer terminals.

With a single keystroke...

Dozens of surveillance screens illuminated.

One displayed San Michele Cathedral.

Another showed Villa Rossi.

Another...

Displayed Elena running through the rain.

Eva looked almost amused.

"He planned every move."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"You've all underestimated her."

Eva laughed.

"No."

"We've underestimated love."

Marco's Discovery

Back at the cathedral ruins...

Italian rescue teams rushed inside.

Marco searched desperately through piles of fallen stone.

"Julian!"

No answer.

Then...

A weak knocking echoed beneath the rubble.

Marco shouted,

"I hear him!"

Engineers hurried forward.

Minutes later...

They pulled Julian from a narrow pocket beneath the collapsed floor.

His face was covered in dust.

Blood trickled from a cut above his eye.

His ribs screamed with every breath.

But he was alive.

"Leonard?"

Marco asked.

Julian slowly stood.

"He's gone."

He looked toward the shattered altar.

"No..."

His eyes narrowed.

"He wanted me to think he escaped."

Marco frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Julian pointed toward the broken stained-glass window.

"The platform wasn't an escape route."

"It was a distraction."

The Real Target

Julian's phone suddenly vibrated.

One encrypted message.

No number.

Only coordinates.

He immediately recognized the location.

The abandoned monastery.

Adrian.

Julian's face changed.

"He was never trying to separate us."

Marco looked confused.

"Then why attack the cathedral?"

Julian started running toward the waiting SUV.

"Because while I was chasing Leonard..."

"...Adrian was walking into the real trap."

Eva's Last Mistake

Inside the monastery...

Eva watched Adrian carefully.

"You've accepted the truth remarkably well."

Adrian quietly smiled.

"No."

"I've accepted one truth."

"What truth?"

"That Leonard lies to everyone."

Eva frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian slowly reached into his jacket.

He removed Alessandro's old pocket watch.

The same watch Julian had shown him days earlier.

He opened it.

Hidden inside...

A tiny recording device blinked.

"I wasn't listening."

He looked directly into Eva's eyes.

"I was recording."

Every word.

Every confession.

Every admission.

Everything she had just revealed...

Had been transmitted live.

Eva's face turned white.

"To who?"

Adrian answered calmly.

"Interpol."

The room fell silent.

Then alarms erupted across every computer terminal.

INTERNATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT CONNECTION ESTABLISHED

LOCATION IDENTIFIED

TACTICAL UNITS EN ROUTE

Eva backed away in disbelief.

"No..."

Adrian lowered his weapon.

"It's over."

She stared at him.

Then...

She smiled.

A strange...

Peaceful smile.

"No."

She reached beneath the control console.

Pressed a hidden switch.

A computerized voice echoed through the monastery.

Self-Destruct Sequence Activated.

Detonation in...

Five minutes.

Red warning lights flooded the underground facility.

Explosives buried beneath the monastery armed simultaneously.

Adrian looked toward the exits.

Steel blast doors slammed shut.

Every escape route disappeared.

Eva laughed quietly.

"If the Circle dies..."

"...its secrets die with us."

Adrian looked around the burning control room.

Then back at Eva.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

He smiled for the first time.

"My brother..."

"...never leaves family behind."

At that exact moment...

May you like

The roar of an approaching engine echoed outside.

Julian had arrived.
