CHAPTER 10 — THE SECOND HEARTBEAT

The monitor emitted a single, piercing tone.

BEEEEEEEEEP—

The green waveform flattened into a lifeless line.

Camila stared at the screen.

"No..."

Julian's blood froze.

"What happened?"

"The baby's heartbeat..."

She swallowed hard.

"...it's gone."

For one endless second, the room stopped existing.

The explosions outside.

The alarms.

The collapsing archive.

Everything disappeared.

There was only silence.

And a single flat line.

Elena Refused to Let Go

Elena lifted her head despite the unbearable pain.

"No."

Her voice was weak.

But unwavering.

"My son is alive."

Camila looked at the monitor.

"The equipment says—"

"I don't care what the equipment says."

Elena pressed both trembling hands against her stomach.

"I can still feel him."

Another tear slid down her cheek.

"He's fighting."

Julian looked into her eyes.

For five years...

She had never been wrong about the children growing inside her.

He trusted her more than any machine.

Don't Stop

The prerecorded image of Professor Gabriella Moretti suddenly resumed on the emergency tablet.

The system had switched to battery power.

Her calm voice filled the darkened room.

"If fetal cardiac monitoring suddenly fails during severe trauma..."

"...never assume the child is dead."

Camila's eyes widened.

She quickly checked the cables.

One connector had been severed by falling debris.

"The monitor lost its signal!"

Julian looked at her.

"The baby?"

She immediately placed a handheld Doppler against Elena's abdomen.

Static.

Silence.

She moved it slightly lower.

Again.

Nothing.

Julian felt hope slipping away.

Then—

A faint sound.

Thump...

Another.

Thump... Thump...

Camila burst into tears.

"There!"

"The heartbeat!"

Weak.

Dangerously slow.

But alive.

Julian closed his eyes in gratitude.

"My son..."

Victor Makes His Move

Outside the clinic...

Victor Keller watched the security feed on a portable tablet.

One of his operatives approached.

"The first twin has been delivered."

Victor nodded.

"And the second?"

"Still inside."

Victor looked thoughtful.

"Good."

The operative frowned.

"Should we storm the clinic?"

Victor slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They're running out of power."

"They'll open the door themselves."

His lips curved into a cold smile.

"Hope makes people impatient."

A Father's Hands

Julian looked toward the battery indicator.

12 Minutes Remaining.

He inhaled deeply.

Camila guided him.

"The baby's shoulder."

"Slowly."

"Good."

Elena cried out.

"I'm sorry."

Julian whispered.

She smiled through the pain.

"Stop apologizing."

"You've never hurt me."

"You've only ever loved me."

His vision blurred.

"I should have protected you."

She reached for his face.

"You came."

"That's all that matters."

The Hidden Recording

As Julian continued the delicate procedure...

Another screen inside the clinic suddenly activated.

Alessandro Rossi appeared once more.

This recording was different.

He looked exhausted.

His eyes were red from lack of sleep.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then Elena survived long enough for you to find her."

He smiled sadly.

"I always knew she was stronger than either of us."

Julian paused only long enough to listen.

"There is something I never told you."

"I adopted Sophia."

Julian froze.

"What?"

Alessandro continued.

"She wasn't my biological daughter."

"I found her when she was six."

"The Circle had murdered her parents."

"I gave her our name."

"I gave her a family."

"And she gave me another child to love."

Julian felt tears sting his eyes.

Sophia had not shared his blood.

Yet she had died protecting him.

Alessandro's voice softened.

"Remember this, son."

"Family is not defined by DNA."

"It is defined by sacrifice."

Elena's Collapse

Without warning...

Elena's blood pressure plummeted.

The monitor flashed.

Severe Hemorrhage

Camila's face turned pale.

"Julian!"

"We have to hurry!"

Elena struggled to keep her eyes open.

"I'm so tired..."

Julian squeezed her hand.

"No."

"Stay with me."

She looked at him weakly.

"If I fall asleep..."

"You wake me up."

"I promise."

Camila's Redemption

Gunfire echoed closer.

The reinforced clinic door shook violently.

Metal bent inward.

Camila looked toward the entrance.

"They're almost through."

She quietly picked up an assault rifle abandoned by one of the guards.

Julian frowned.

"What are you doing?"

She checked the magazine.

"Buying you time."

"You'll be killed."

She smiled faintly.

"I've been dead inside for seven years."

She looked at Elena.

"You gave me the courage to become human again."

Then she looked at Julian.

"Don't waste it."

Without waiting for an answer...

Camila opened the clinic door just enough to slip outside.

The heavy door slammed shut behind her.

Seconds later—

Gunfire erupted.

Short bursts.

Controlled.

Professional.

Then explosions.

Victor's men shouted.

"She's in the hallway!"

"Flank her!"

The firefight echoed through the underground corridors.

Every second she survived...

Was another second for Julian.

The Birth

Julian focused completely.

One careful movement.

Then another.

Camila's earlier instructions echoed in his mind.

"Gently."

"Support the head."

"Don't rush."

Then—

A tiny hand appeared.

Julian smiled.

"I've got you."

Moments later...

The second baby slipped safely into his waiting arms.

A boy.

But unlike his sister...

He made no sound.

No cry.

No movement.

His skin had a faint bluish tint.

Julian's smile disappeared.

"Why isn't he breathing?"

Elena tried to lift herself.

"Our son..."

Julian rubbed the baby's tiny back.

Nothing.

He cleared the airway.

Still nothing.

Outside...

Gunfire abruptly stopped.

The silence was worse.

A slow series of footsteps approached the clinic door.

Victor Keller's voice echoed through the steel.

"Julian."

"You have one minute."

"Surrender the archive..."

"...and I'll send in a real doctor."

Julian ignored him.

He looked only at his son.

"Come on..."

"You've already fought this hard."

"Don't stop now."

He gently breathed into the baby's tiny lungs.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nothing.

Elena silently prayed.

Julian refused to give up.

Then—

A tiny cough.

Another.

Suddenly—

The little boy inhaled with all the strength his tiny lungs could gather.

A loud cry burst through the room.

The sound echoed against the concrete walls.

Julian laughed through tears.

Elena covered her face, sobbing with relief.

"Our son..."

"Our son is here."

The Door Opens

At that exact moment...

The reinforced clinic door gave way.

With a deafening crash, it burst inward.

Smoke poured into the room.

Victor Keller stepped through the shattered entrance.

His immaculate suit was stained with dust.

Behind him stood six armed operatives.

Victor calmly looked at the newborn twins.

Then at Julian.

Finally, he smiled.

"Congratulations."

His eyes grew cold.

"I'll be taking my grandchildren now."

Julian stood between Victor and his family, one arm shielding Elena and the twins.

Without a word...

He raised Alessandro Rossi's hidden fountain pen.

The blade concealed inside the pen caught the emergency light.

Victor chuckled.

"A pen?"

Julian's voice was steady.

"It was my father's."

May you like

"And today..."

"...it's enough."
