CHAPTER 13 — THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS

The message remained on Julian's screen.

You defeated Victor... but you haven't met the man who truly built the Circle.

There was no phone number.

No sender.

No traceable signal.

Within seconds, Interpol's cybercrime unit attempted to locate its origin.

Nothing.

The message had routed through dozens of encrypted satellite relays before self-destructing.

"It's gone," the lead analyst said, lowering his laptop. "Whoever sent this knew exactly how to disappear."

Julian stared at the empty screen.

He had spent years believing Victor Keller was the architect behind Elena's disappearance.

Now he realized Victor had merely been a lieutenant.

The true mastermind was still free.

A Family's First Morning

The following morning, sunlight poured through the windows of the private maternity suite.

For the first time in nearly a year, Julian allowed himself to breathe.

Elena sat in bed, gently rocking baby Isabella.

Little Alessandro slept peacefully in a transparent bassinet beside her.

Julian stood watching them.

He memorized every tiny detail.

The way Isabella wrapped her tiny fingers around Elena's thumb.

The soft rise and fall of Alessandro's chest.

The quiet smile on Elena's face.

"This..." Elena whispered.

"...is all I ever wanted."

Julian kissed her forehead.

"And no one is taking it away again."

Before she could answer, someone knocked gently on the door.

Harrison Arrives

An older gentleman entered, dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit.

Silver hair.

Sharp blue eyes.

A calm confidence that immediately filled the room.

Elena smiled.

"Uncle Matteo."

Julian turned in surprise.

"You never told me your uncle was coming."

Matteo DeLuca embraced Elena carefully.

"I came as soon as I heard."

He looked down at the twins.

"They're beautiful."

Julian extended his hand.

"It's an honor."

Matteo shook it firmly.

"The honor is mine."

There was something unusual about the older man.

His posture.

His awareness.

The way his eyes instinctively checked every exit in the room.

He wasn't simply a retired businessman.

He had the instincts of someone who had survived dangerous enemies.

A Name from the Past

After the nurses left, Matteo placed an old leather folder on the table.

"I've kept this sealed for twenty-seven years."

Julian frowned.

"What is it?"

Matteo slowly opened the file.

Inside were photographs.

Newspaper clippings.

Old passports.

Financial records.

On the very first page...

Julian froze.

A younger Alessandro Rossi stood beside Victor Keller.

And beside them...

The missing third founder.

This time, his face was intact.

Julian whispered,

"I know him..."

Elena leaned closer.

"No..."

Her voice trembled.

"That's impossible."

The man in the photograph smiled confidently into the camera.

His name was printed beneath the image.

Leonard Ashcroft.

Julian's heartbeat accelerated.

"That's the chairman of the European Humanitarian Foundation."

Matteo nodded grimly.

"Exactly."

One of Europe's most respected philanthropists.

Winner of international peace awards.

Advisor to presidents.

A man celebrated for building hospitals and orphanages around the world.

He was also...

The last founder of the Obsidian Circle.

The Double Life

Matteo quietly continued.

"Leonard created the Circle forty years ago."

"Victor managed the operations."

"Alessandro infiltrated them."

Julian looked confused.

"My father was one of the founders?"

"No."

Matteo shook his head.

"He pretended to be."

"He spent twenty years gathering evidence from inside."

Elena gasped.

"So everything..."

"...was undercover."

Matteo nodded.

"Your father sacrificed his reputation to destroy them."

Julian finally understood why Alessandro had carried so many secrets.

He hadn't hidden the truth from his family because he didn't trust them.

He had hidden it because knowing the truth would have gotten them killed.

Leonard's Broadcast

At that exact moment...

Every television in the hospital suddenly switched channels.

The same live press conference appeared on every screen.

Leonard Ashcroft stood behind a podium in Geneva.

Reporters applauded as he accepted another humanitarian award.

He smiled warmly.

"My mission has always been simple."

"To protect the vulnerable."

Julian stared in disbelief.

The man responsible for destroying thousands of lives stood before the world pretending to save them.

The applause echoed through the television speakers.

It made Julian sick.

Camila Wakes

Down the hallway...

A nurse rushed into the intensive care unit.

"Doctor!"

"She's awake!"

Julian and Elena hurried to Camila's room.

Her eyes slowly opened.

She looked weak.

Confused.

Then she recognized them.

"You made it."

Julian smiled.

"We all did."

Camila's first question wasn't about herself.

"The babies?"

Elena gently placed Isabella into Camila's arms.

"They're safe."

Camila burst into tears.

"I never thought..."

"...I'd get to hold hope."

The tiny baby yawned peacefully.

Without knowing it...

She had forgiven the woman who once served her family's enemies.

A Gift

Later that afternoon, Julian visited the archive one final time before it was transferred into government custody.

Inside Alessandro's private desk, investigators discovered a velvet box.

It contained an antique pocket watch.

Engraved inside were the words:

For Julian.

Time reveals every lie.

Hidden beneath the watch was a folded handwritten note.

Son,

If Leonard is still alive, never fight him in anger.

He feeds on hatred.

Destroy him with the truth.

That is the only battle he can never win.

— Dad

Julian closed the note carefully.

"I understand."

The Assassin

That evening...

Leonard Ashcroft's private jet landed at a secluded airfield outside Geneva.

Inside the luxurious cabin, he calmly poured himself a glass of red wine.

A young assistant approached.

"Sir."

"The Rossi family survived."

Leonard smiled faintly.

"I know."

"The archives were released."

"I know."

"Victor Keller has been arrested."

"I know."

The assistant hesitated.

"What are your orders?"

Leonard looked out the window at the darkening sky.

"No more kidnappings."

"No more disappearances."

"We've entered a new game."

He pressed a button hidden beneath his armrest.

A secure compartment opened.

Inside rested a single silver folder marked:

PROJECT PHOENIX

Leonard gently ran one finger across its cover.

"Prepare our last asset."

The assistant's face turned pale.

"Are you certain?"

Leonard's smile never faded.

"I've waited twenty years."

May you like

"It's time for Julian Rossi to meet..."

"...his brother."
