CHAPTER 14 — OPERATION PHOENIX

Rain washed over the streets of Milan as Julian's motorcade pulled away from St. Raphael Medical Center.

The city looked peaceful.

Families strolled beneath umbrellas.

Cafés bustled with afternoon conversations.

Children laughed in nearby parks.

It looked like an ordinary day.

Julian knew better.

He glanced in the rearview mirror.

The black sedan was still there.

Always three cars behind.

Always maintaining the exact same distance.

Never speeding.

Never falling back.

Professional.

His security chief, Marco Bianchi, noticed it too.

"They've been with us since the hospital."

Julian nodded.

"I know."

"Should I lose them?"

"No."

Julian looked down at the twins sleeping peacefully in their car seats.

"I want to know who's brave enough to follow my family."

Home Doesn't Feel Safe

The gates of Villa Rossi slowly opened.

For generations, the estate had been considered one of the safest private residences in Italy.

Twenty-foot stone walls.

Thermal cameras.

Facial recognition.

Former military personnel guarding every entrance.

Yet as Julian carried baby Alessandro through the front door, he felt something unfamiliar.

Not relief.

Unease.

Elena sensed it immediately.

"You think they'll come here."

Julian answered honestly.

"I think they've already been here."

Marco approached moments later.

"We swept the property."

"And?"

"No explosives."

"No listening devices."

He hesitated.

"But..."

Julian looked up.

"Someone accessed our security network twenty-one minutes ago."

Elena's heart skipped.

"Can they still see us?"

Marco shook his head.

"We shut the system down."

"But whoever got in..."

"...knew exactly what they were looking for."

The Man in the Sedan

Half a mile away...

The black sedan remained parked beneath a line of cypress trees.

Inside, a young man quietly watched the estate through binoculars.

Thirty-two years old.

Dark hair.

Steel-gray eyes.

The resemblance to Julian Rossi was impossible to ignore.

He opened the file resting on the passenger seat.

TARGET: JULIAN ROSSI

He had memorized every page years ago.

Date of birth.

Education.

Business acquisitions.

Marriage.

Elena.

The twins.

Every victory.

Every failure.

He closed the folder.

Then reached into his jacket.

Instead of a weapon...

He removed a faded photograph.

It showed two boys.

One about eight years old.

The other no older than three.

The older child was Julian.

The younger boy's face had been partially burned away by fire.

The young man stared at the picture.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"You never knew I existed."

Leonard's Explanation

Thousands of kilometers away...

Leonard Ashcroft sat inside his Geneva office overlooking Lake Geneva.

Across from him stood the same young man via encrypted video.

"You've found him."

"Yes."

"And?"

The young man answered calmly.

"He has a family."

Leonard smiled.

"That makes him predictable."

Silence.

Leonard leaned forward.

"Do you remember what they did to your mother?"

The young man's jaw tightened.

"No."

"You remember what I taught you."

Images appeared on the screen.

A burning house.

A woman screaming.

A small child crying.

"They abandoned you."

Leonard's voice remained soft.

"They chose Julian."

"They left you to die."

The young man's breathing grew heavier.

Leonard knew exactly which wounds to reopen.

"Finish what your father started."

The screen went black.

Camila's Decision

At the rehabilitation wing of the hospital...

Camila struggled to stand.

The doctors objected immediately.

"You've barely recovered."

"I know."

"You need another week."

"I don't have another week."

She slowly buttoned a borrowed jacket.

One of the nurses frowned.

"Where are you going?"

Camila looked toward the window.

"To repay another debt."

Isabella's Bracelet

That evening...

Elena noticed something strange while changing baby Isabella's clothes.

Around the infant's tiny wrist rested a thin silver bracelet.

Elena frowned.

"I've never seen this."

Julian looked closer.

It certainly hadn't been there at the hospital.

The bracelet was beautifully crafted.

Almost weightless.

Inside was a tiny engraving.

For the daughter of the truth.

No signature.

No manufacturer.

Nothing.

Marco immediately scanned it.

"No explosives."

"No poison."

"But..."

"What?"

"There is a hidden microchip."

Julian's face darkened.

"Track it."

Minutes later, the security lab produced shocking results.

The bracelet wasn't transmitting.

It was receiving.

Someone had secretly placed a sophisticated encrypted receiver on their newborn daughter.

Someone wanted information to reach her...

Not from her.

The Recording

The chip contained only one audio file.

Julian played it.

A familiar voice filled the room.

Sophia.

Everyone froze.

Her voice was weak.

As though she had recorded it shortly before entering the tunnel.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...then I didn't survive."

Elena covered her mouth.

Julian couldn't speak.

Sophia continued.

"There's one secret Alessandro never discovered."

"The Circle didn't create Project Phoenix."

"They stole it."

Julian frowned.

"What?"

"The real Phoenix..."

"...was a child."

Silence.

"A little boy hidden after the fire twenty-six years ago."

"He wasn't killed."

"He was taken."

"He grew up believing Julian abandoned him."

Sophia's breathing became labored.

"His name..."

Static interrupted the recording.

The audio distorted violently.

Then stopped.

The final name never played.

The Attack

Before anyone could react...

The lights inside Villa Rossi suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Marco shouted,

"Emergency power!"

Nothing happened.

Every security monitor died simultaneously.

Outside...

The estate's backup generators exploded one after another.

Julian immediately picked up both twins.

"Safe room!"

Gunfire shattered the front windows.

Masked attackers flooded the gardens.

Marco returned fire.

"Move!"

Elena clutched Julian's arm as they ran through the darkened hallway.

Behind them...

The massive oak front doors burst inward.

Black-clad soldiers entered the mansion with military precision.

One of them shouted,

"Secure the children!"

Face to Face

Julian reached the entrance to the underground safe room.

Then stopped.

Someone stood waiting inside.

The young man from the black sedan.

He held a pistol.

But it wasn't aimed at Julian.

It was aimed at the floor.

He slowly removed a silver pendant from around his neck.

Inside the pendant...

Was the same childhood photograph Julian had found years ago in Alessandro's old desk.

The man looked directly into Julian's eyes.

His voice was calm.

Almost painfully calm.

"My name..."

"...is Adrian."

He swallowed hard.

"I think..."

"...I'm your brother."

At that exact moment—

Gunfire erupted from both ends of the corridor.

Julian and Adrian instinctively turned toward the attackers.

Without exchanging another word...

May you like

The two men stood shoulder to shoulder.

For the first time in their lives.
