CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR

The steel locker room fell into a suffocating silence.

Julian's fingers tightened around the ultrasound photograph.

Twins.

One baby survived.

His heart pounded so violently he could barely hear himself breathe.

Across the room, Camila calmly leaned against the closed metal door.

The sweet smile she had worn for four months was gone.

In its place stood a woman Julian had never truly known.

Cold.

Patient.

Calculating.

She folded her arms.

"I wondered how long it would take before you found that locker."

Julian stared at her.

"You knew."

"I knew enough."

His jaw clenched.

"You knew Elena was alive."

"Yes."

"You knew she was pregnant."

"Yes."

"You knew I spent eight months searching for my wife."

Camila nodded without the slightest hint of guilt.

"Yes."

Julian took one slow step toward her.

"Then why?"

Her expression remained perfectly calm.

"Because you were never supposed to find her."

The Perfect Girlfriend

Julian's mind raced.

Every memory from the past four months suddenly looked different.

Camila had appeared exactly four months after Elena vanished.

They had met by coincidence...

Or so he thought.

At a charity gala in Monaco.

She had accidentally spilled champagne on his jacket.

Apologized.

Made him laugh for the first time in months.

She never pressured him.

Never asked about his money.

Never rushed the relationship.

She had been...

Perfect.

Too perfect.

Now Julian saw it clearly.

Every meeting.

Every dinner.

Every vacation.

Every carefully timed conversation.

Nothing had been accidental.

"You planned everything."

Camila smiled.

"It wasn't difficult."

"You were lonely."

"Grieving."

"And desperate to believe life could move forward."

Julian's voice turned icy.

"Who are you?"

Instead of answering...

She asked her own question.

"Have you ever wondered why Elena disappeared without taking a single dollar?"

Julian remained silent.

Camila stepped closer.

"She left behind jewelry worth millions."

"Her passport."

"Every credit card."

"Even her phone."

She tilted her head.

"Does that sound like a woman running away?"

"No."

"It sounds like someone who wasn't allowed to choose."

The Video

Camila reached into her evening purse.

She removed a small flash drive.

"I wasn't supposed to show you this."

"Then why are you?"

"Because plans have changed."

Julian hesitated.

"Watch it."

She pointed toward the laptop sitting on a maintenance desk.

Julian inserted the drive.

A grainy security recording appeared.

The date froze him.

Eight months earlier.

The night Elena disappeared.

The camera overlooked the underground parking garage of the Rossi estate.

Julian leaned closer.

The footage showed Elena walking toward her car.

She looked relaxed.

She was smiling.

Then...

A black van pulled beside her.

Four masked men jumped out.

One covered her mouth.

Another injected something into her neck.

Within seconds...

She collapsed.

The men carried her into the van.

It drove away.

Total time.

Twenty-three seconds.

Julian stopped breathing.

His wife hadn't abandoned him.

She had been kidnapped.

Rage

The laptop snapped shut.

Julian looked at Camila.

His eyes had become frighteningly calm.

"You've had this for eight months."

"Yes."

"You watched me destroy myself."

"Yes."

"You let me believe my wife abandoned me."

"Yes."

Every answer struck harder than the last.

Julian's voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"If Elena dies..."

"...I will spend the rest of my life making sure everyone responsible wishes they had died first."

For the first time...

Camila looked uncomfortable.

Not afraid.

Just...

Uneasy.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because if I tell you everything..."

"...none of us leave this hotel alive."

Someone Is Listening

Without warning...

Camila's eyes shifted toward the ceiling.

She subtly shook her head.

Almost invisibly.

Julian immediately understood.

Cameras.

Microphones.

They weren't alone.

Camila suddenly raised her voice.

"I told you this relationship was over!"

Julian blinked.

"What?"

She slapped him.

Hard.

The sound echoed through the locker room.

"I don't care about your missing wife anymore!"

She shouted loud enough for anyone listening.

"Go find her!"

"I hope she's worth ruining your life!"

Julian finally understood.

She was acting.

For whoever was watching.

He grabbed her wrist.

"You used me!"

"Yes!"

She screamed dramatically.

"I used you!"

Then...

While struggling against him...

She slipped something into the inside pocket of his jacket.

A folded piece of paper.

No camera could have seen it.

The Interruption

The locker room door burst open.

Three silver-badge security officers entered.

"There seems to be a problem."

Camila instantly stepped away from Julian.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

"He became aggressive."

The lead guard looked at Julian.

"Sir..."

"I'm going to ask you to return to your suite."

Julian forced himself to remain calm.

"I was leaving."

The guards escorted him toward the elevator.

Just before the doors closed...

Julian glanced back.

Camila stood exactly where he'd left her.

Their eyes met for one second.

She barely moved her lips.

Read it alone.

The Letter

Back inside the presidential suite...

Julian locked himself in the bathroom.

He unfolded the tiny note.

The handwriting wasn't Camila's.

It belonged to Elena.

Julian...

If you're reading this, Camila decided to trust you.

She isn't your enemy.

She was sent to watch you... but she became mine instead.

She has risked her life more times than I can count.

Please don't hate her.

There are children here.

Women too.

They all disappeared just like I did.

We aren't employees.

We're prisoners.

The hotel isn't the business.

It's the cover.

Whatever happens...

Don't try to rescue me tonight.

They're waiting for you to make that mistake.

And Julian...

If our son survives...

Promise me he'll never know what happened in this place.

I still love you.

Always.

— Elena

Julian read the letter three times.

Then a fourth.

His vision blurred.

Not from anger.

From relief.

For the first time in eight months...

He knew one undeniable truth.

Elena had never stopped loving him.

She had been protecting him all along.

The Basement Level

At that very moment...

Two floors below...

Elena knelt on the cold concrete floor of a locked service corridor.

A contraction ripped through her body.

She pressed one trembling hand against her swollen stomach.

"It's too early..."

she whispered.

Another contraction hit harder.

A female housekeeper rushed toward her.

"Elena!"

Before anyone could help...

The steel door opened.

Sophia Laurent walked inside.

She looked at Elena's pale face.

Then at the growing pool of water beneath her feet.

Her expression changed.

"Call the doctor."

One guard frowned.

"The doctor isn't scheduled until tomorrow."

Sophia's voice turned to ice.

"I wasn't asking."

May you like

She looked directly at Elena.

"The baby's coming."
