CHAPTER 6 — THE MAN WHO SIGNED THE DEATH CERTIFICATE

The emergency lights flickered.
Red.
White.
Red again.
Their cold glow spilled across the narrow stone passage, stretching long shadows against the ancient walls.
Julian tightened his hold on Elena.
She was barely conscious.
Each contraction left her weaker than the last.
Twin heartbeats echoed softly from the portable fetal monitor Sophia had shoved into his hands before the tunnel door slammed shut.
Two lives.
Still fighting.
Still alive.
Then the man stepped fully into the light.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Perfectly tailored charcoal suit.
Not a single wrinkle despite the chaos surrounding him.
His polished black shoes clicked slowly against the stone floor.
His smile was calm.
Almost warm.
But Julian knew better.
He had seen that smile before.
Three years ago.
At his father's funeral.
Dr. Victor Keller.
The physician who had officially certified Alessandro Rossi's death as natural cardiac arrest.
The man Julian had thanked...
For trying to save his father.
A Ghost from the Past
"Good evening, Julian."
Victor's voice carried the smooth confidence of a man who had never once feared consequences.
"I was hoping we'd meet under better circumstances."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"You murdered my father."
Victor sighed.
"No."
"I merely signed paperwork."
"The decision had already been made."
Rage flashed across Julian's face.
"You expect that distinction to matter?"
"It matters to history."
Victor replied calmly.
"History never remembers the hand that signs."
"It remembers the hand that gives the order."
Elena's Fear
The moment Elena saw Victor...
Every trace of color vanished from her face.
"No..."
She whispered.
Julian looked down.
"You know him."
Her trembling fingers gripped his jacket.
"Run."
"What?"
"Julian..."
Her breathing became frantic.
"Don't talk to him."
"Don't believe anything he says."
Victor smiled faintly.
"Elena was always perceptive."
He looked almost amused.
"She recognized me much sooner than Alessandro did."
The Secret Doctor
Victor removed a pair of leather gloves.
"I've spent thirty years studying one thing."
Julian said nothing.
"Human inheritance."
"The passing of power."
"The preservation of bloodlines."
Julian frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor gestured toward Elena's stomach.
"The twins."
"They're extraordinary."
"They're babies."
Victor chuckled.
"Exactly."
"Innocent."
"Unaware."
"And yet..."
"...worth more than every company you own."
Alessandro's Discovery
Victor slowly walked closer.
Three meters away.
Then stopped.
"Your father discovered our research."
"He refused to cooperate."
Julian's voice turned icy.
"So you killed him."
Victor nodded once.
"It was unfortunate."
"But necessary."
The words echoed through the tunnel.
Elena closed her eyes.
Julian felt something inside him break.
For three years...
He had blamed himself.
He had believed he should have forced a second autopsy.
Demanded another investigation.
Now...
The man responsible stood calmly in front of him.
Admitting everything.
Without regret.
The Rossi Legacy
"You still don't understand what Alessandro protected."
Victor reached into his jacket.
Julian instantly shielded Elena.
Instead of a weapon...
Victor produced an old photograph.
He tossed it onto the stone floor.
Julian glanced down.
His breath caught.
The picture had been taken almost forty years earlier.
A younger Alessandro Rossi stood beside another man.
Both wore construction helmets.
Both smiled proudly before the skeleton of a massive luxury hotel.
Julian recognized the building immediately.
The Grand Alcazar.
But it wasn't the hotel that stunned him.
It was the man standing beside his father.
Victor Keller.
They had once been friends.
Brothers
Victor looked at the photograph.
"There was a time..."
"...when Alessandro trusted me more than anyone."
Julian stared at him.
"You built this hotel together?"
Victor nodded.
"We built many things together."
"Until he discovered what you were doing."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"He called it evil."
"I called it evolution."
A Mother's Strength
Another contraction tore through Elena's body.
She cried out.
Julian immediately knelt beside her.
"Stay with me."
She forced herself to breathe.
"I'm trying..."
Victor watched quietly.
Then surprised Julian by saying,
"She's stronger than most."
Julian glared at him.
"Don't pretend you care."
Victor answered softly.
"I don't."
"I care about the children."
Camila Arrives
Footsteps echoed through the tunnel.
Julian turned.
Camila appeared from the darkness.
Her emerald evening gown was gone.
She now wore black tactical clothing.
A pistol rested at her hip.
Julian instinctively stepped in front of Elena.
Camila slowly raised both hands.
"I'm not here to hurt you."
Victor smiled.
"I was wondering when you'd betray us."
Camila looked directly at him.
"I already did."
Without warning—
She fired.
The bullet shattered the control panel beside Victor's head.
Sparks exploded.
The heavy steel barrier behind him began closing.
Victor stepped backward.
"You've chosen the wrong side."
Camila reloaded calmly.
"No."
"I finally chose the right one."
The barrier continued descending.
Victor looked at Julian one last time.
"We'll meet again."
He smiled.
"And next time..."
"...bring the twins."
The steel door slammed shut between them.
The Escape Map
Camila hurried toward Julian.
"We don't have much time."
Julian didn't lower his guard.
"You lied to me."
"Yes."
"You manipulated me."
"Yes."
"You worked for them."
Her voice broke.
"For seven years."
Silence.
"I couldn't leave."
"They would've killed my family."
Julian searched her face.
He saw no deception.
Only exhaustion.
And guilt.
She reached inside her tactical vest and unfolded an old blueprint.
"I stole this from Victor."
Julian immediately recognized his father's handwriting.
The underground complex stretched beneath nearly the entire resort.
Hidden laboratories.
Medical wings.
Storage vaults.
Escape routes.
Then one room caught his attention.
ARCHIVE Ω
"What is that?"
Camila swallowed.
"The room they've spent twenty years searching for."
Julian frowned.
"My father built it?"
"Yes."
"Nobody has ever opened it."
"Why?"
She looked directly at him.
"Because it only opens..."
"...for a Rossi."
Elena's Confession
Elena weakly touched Julian's hand.
"There was..."
"...one more reason..."
"...I disappeared."
Julian leaned closer.
"What?"
Tears filled her eyes.
"The night..."
"...they kidnapped me..."
"I had already found the key."
Julian frowned.
"What key?"
She slowly reached beneath her hospital gown.
Around her neck...
Hidden beneath the fabric...
Hung a tiny silver pendant Julian had never seen before.
She removed it with trembling fingers.
It wasn't jewelry.
It was a key.
Small.
Intricately carved.
Bearing the Rossi family crest.
Camila gasped.
"My God..."
"You still have it."
Elena nodded weakly.
"I never let them find it."
Julian stared at the tiny silver key.
His father had hidden something so important...
That people had murdered to obtain it.
And Elena had protected it...
For eight months of captivity.
The Chase Begins
Before anyone could speak—
A deafening alarm erupted throughout the tunnel.
A computerized voice echoed through hidden speakers.
Warning.
Archive Key Detected.
All response teams converge immediately.
Lethal force authorized.
Camila's eyes widened.
"They activated the key."
"Run!"
The tunnel shook violently.
Heavy footsteps thundered from every direction.
Dozens of armed men were closing in.
Julian slipped the silver key into his pocket, lifted Elena into his arms once more, and followed Camila into the darkness.

Behind them...
The hunt had begun.
