CHAPTER 2 — EIGHT MONTHS OF LIES

Julian's fingers tightened around his phone.

The photograph filled the screen.

There was no mistaking it.

Elena stood in the hotel's service corridor only minutes earlier, still wearing the same charcoal-gray housekeeping uniform.

Her cleaning cart was parked beside a steel door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.

Behind her...

Hidden in the shadows...

A man in black pressed a handgun discreetly against the middle of her back.

Anyone walking past would have mistaken it for a hand guiding an employee forward.

But Julian recognized the angle.

The pressure.

The intent.

That wasn't guidance.

It was control.

His pulse thundered in his ears.

Camila leaned closer.

"What is it?"

Without thinking, Julian locked his screen.

"Nothing."

She smiled.

"Business?"

He nodded once.

"Something like that."

For the first time since they'd started dating...

He lied to her.

The Message

His phone vibrated again.

Another anonymous text appeared.

There was no number.

Only a secure encrypted sender.

If you want your wife alive...

Pretend you never saw her.

Room 2808. Midnight. Come alone.

Tell no one.

The message vanished five seconds later.

Automatically deleted.

Julian frowned.

Military-grade encryption.

Someone had gone to extraordinary lengths.

Whoever was behind Elena's disappearance wasn't an ordinary criminal.

Dinner That Never Began

Camila slipped her hand through his arm.

"Our reservation is waiting."

Julian forced a smile.

"Let's eat."

The rooftop restaurant overlooked the Mediterranean coastline.

Candles flickered across white linen tables.

A string quartet played softly in the background.

Normally...

Julian would have admired the view.

Tonight...

He barely noticed the ocean.

His mind replayed the same questions.

Who had taken Elena?

Why had she been forced to disappear?

Why was she working as a housekeeper?

And...

Who exactly was Camila?

She poured herself another glass of champagne.

"You've been quiet."

"I'm thinking."

"About her?"

Julian looked out toward the sea.

"Yes."

Camila sighed dramatically.

"I knew this would happen."

"What?"

"You never stopped loving her."

Silence.

Finally...

Julian answered honestly.

"I never stopped looking."

Camila's smile faded.

Eight Months Earlier

The first seventy-two hours after Elena disappeared had been pure chaos.

Police searched the Rossi estate.

Every employee was questioned.

Security footage showed Elena entering the house that afternoon.

No footage ever showed her leaving.

Private investigators scanned airports.

Train stations.

Border crossings.

Nothing.

Her passport remained locked inside the bedroom safe.

Her bank accounts were untouched.

Even her favorite handbag remained hanging inside their dressing room.

Detective Marco Bellini had eventually delivered the conclusion Julian refused to accept.

"Either your wife chose to disappear..."

"...or someone made her disappear."

Julian had spent the next eight months trying to prove the second possibility.

The Wedding Video

Back in the restaurant...

Julian opened the hidden folder on his phone.

Thousands of photographs.

Hundreds of videos.

Every memory of Elena.

He stopped on one recording.

Their wedding day.

Lake Como.

Five years earlier.

Elena laughed as the wind lifted her veil.

"You know what's funny?"

She smiled at the camera.

"Everyone thinks you're intimidating."

Julian laughed.

"I am."

"No."

She kissed his cheek.

"You're only terrifying in board meetings."

She rested her hand over his heart.

"Here..."

"...you're the gentlest man I've ever known."

The video ended.

Julian stared at the black screen.

Someone had stolen that life from both of them.

A Small Mistake

Across the table...

Camila checked her phone.

Only for a second.

But Julian noticed.

The reflection in her champagne glass showed part of the screen.

One message.

Three words.

He's suspicious now.

His expression didn't change.

Pretending not to notice...

He reached for his wine.

Camila quickly locked her phone.

"Everything okay?"

She smiled.

"Just work."

Julian smiled back.

"So is mine."

Neither of them believed the other.

The Basement

At precisely 10:30 p.m., Julian excused himself.

"I need to make a business call."

Camila nodded.

"I'll wait upstairs."

Instead of leaving the hotel...

Julian walked toward the service elevators.

He remembered the anonymous photograph.

The basement.

The steel door.

The gun.

The employee corridor was almost empty.

Housekeepers pushed fresh linens between floors.

Maintenance workers repaired lighting fixtures.

Nobody paid attention to a man wearing a tailored Italian suit.

Until...

A familiar voice whispered,

"Mr. Rossi..."

Julian turned.

An elderly janitor stood beside a supply closet.

His uniform looked decades old.

His hands trembled slightly.

"You shouldn't be here."

Julian stepped closer.

"You know Elena."

The old man glanced nervously toward the security camera.

Then nodded once.

"She saved my granddaughter."

Julian frowned.

"What?"

"Three months ago."

The janitor's voice cracked.

"My granddaughter needed emergency surgery."

"I couldn't afford it."

"The next morning..."

"Someone anonymously paid every hospital bill."

Julian already knew who had done it.

Elena.

Even after everything...

She was still helping strangers.

The Warning

The old man reached into his pocket.

He handed Julian a tiny brass key.

"What is this?"

"Laundry locker 417."

"Elena told me..."

"...if you ever came looking..."

"...to give you this."

Julian closed his fingers around the key.

"Where is she?"

Before the janitor could answer—

Footsteps echoed down the corridor.

Heavy.

Fast.

The old man's face turned white.

"They're coming."

He grabbed Julian's sleeve.

"Listen carefully."

"You cannot trust anyone wearing a silver hotel badge."

"What do you mean?"

"They don't work for the hotel."

"What?"

"They're watching every employee."

Every camera.

Every hallway.

Every phone call."

Julian's heartbeat accelerated.

"This place..."

"...isn't a resort."

"It's a prison."

Too Late

Three men in black suits rounded the corner.

Each wore identical silver employee badges.

Their smiles looked professional.

Their eyes didn't.

"There you are, Mr. Rossi."

One stepped forward politely.

"The Executive Manager has been looking for you."

Julian slipped the brass key into his pocket.

"I got lost."

"It happens."

The man smiled.

"We'll escort you upstairs."

Behind them...

The elderly janitor quietly disappeared through another hallway.

One of the men noticed.

His expression darkened.

"You."

The janitor froze.

"You've been talking."

"No..."

"I was only giving directions."

The suited man punched him across the face.

The old man collapsed onto the concrete floor.

Julian exploded.

"What the hell are you doing?"

The other two guards immediately stepped between them.

"Please don't interfere, Mr. Rossi."

Julian shoved one aside.

"Call an ambulance!"

The guard smiled.

"No need."

"He won't remember the fall."

Julian looked at the man's badge.

It carried no hotel logo.

Only a tiny silver crest.

A serpent wrapped around a crown.

He had never seen that symbol before.

But instinct told him one thing.

It had nothing to do with hospitality.

Midnight

Back in his suite...

Julian locked every door.

Camila had already fallen asleep in the bedroom.

Or at least...

She pretended to.

Julian quietly removed the brass key.

Attached to it was a tiny paper tag.

417

Exactly five minutes before midnight...

He left the suite alone.

The service hallway was deserted.

Locker Room 417 stood at the far end of the laundry department.

His hands trembled slightly as he inserted the key.

The metal door clicked open.

Inside...

There was no uniform.

No supplies.

Only a small velvet pouch.

Julian opened it.

A delicate silver necklace fell into his palm.

It was Elena's.

The necklace he had fastened around her neck on their first wedding anniversary.

Beneath it lay a folded ultrasound image.

His breath caught.

Twins.

The examination date was seven months earlier.

Written across the bottom in Elena's handwriting were six heartbreaking words.

One baby survived... don't tell Julian.

Julian's knees nearly gave out.

Twins.

They had been expecting twins.

And one of his children...

Had died.

Without him ever knowing.

Then—

A voice echoed behind him.

Cold.

Female.

Perfectly calm.

"You weren't supposed to find that."

Julian slowly turned.

Standing in the doorway...

May you like

Watching him with an unreadable smile...

Was Camila.
