CHAPTER 8 — THE THREAT

The package arrived at 6:48 a.m.

It was small.

Neatly wrapped.

No return address.

No courier information.

Just a pale pink gift box tied with a satin ribbon.

The kind of package people sent to celebrate the birth of a child.

A volunteer at the hospital reception smiled as she accepted it.

"For the new mother?"

The delivery man only nodded.

He wore a baseball cap pulled low over his face.

Within seconds, he disappeared into the morning crowd.

No one noticed that he had never signed the delivery log.

Montgomery Medical Center

The package sat on the nurses' station for nearly twenty minutes before anyone questioned it.

Nurse Olivia picked it up.

"It says it's for Mrs. Khloe Harrington."

She checked the visitor list.

"No sender."

Hospital policy required every unidentified package delivered to a high-profile patient to be inspected.

Especially after the attempted murder inside the ICU.

She called hospital security.

Five minutes later...

Officer Daniel Reyes carefully carried the box into the inspection room.

He slipped on latex gloves.

"Let's hope it's just flowers."

He untied the ribbon.

Lifted the lid.

Inside...

A folded pink baby blanket.

Nothing else.

He smiled.

"False alarm."

Then he unfolded the blanket.

A white envelope slid onto the table.

Officer Reyes frowned.

He opened it.

His face instantly lost its color.

He picked up the radio.

"Lock down the maternity floor."

"Now."

Room 714

Khloe looked up as Harrison entered.

One glance at his face told her something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Instead of answering, he handed her the note.

Her hands trembled as she unfolded it.

Five words.

Written in black ink.

NEXT TIME, NEITHER SURVIVES.

The room became painfully quiet.

Khloe's breathing grew uneven.

"They're talking about Emma."

Harrison gently took the note back before her heart monitor could climb any higher.

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"They're talking about both of you."

Dr. Sutton stepped forward.

"She shouldn't be seeing this."

Harrison nodded.

"I know."

But it was too late.

The fear had already reached her eyes.

Evidence Lab

Detective Doyle watched the forensic team examine every inch of the package.

"No fingerprints."

One technician looked up.

"Not a single usable print."

"What about DNA?"

"They wore gloves."

"The ribbon?"

"Factory packaging."

"The paper?"

"Commercial stock."

The lead analyst sighed.

"Professional."

Doyle had expected that.

Whoever had sent the message wanted fear.

Not evidence.

Then another technician spoke.

"We found something else."

"What?"

He placed the baby blanket beneath a forensic light.

Tiny fluorescent particles glowed across the fabric.

"Industrial fiberglass."

Doyle frowned.

"Where would that come from?"

The technician typed rapidly.

"There are only three manufacturers within two hundred miles."

He paused.

"The largest supplier..."

"...provides insulation materials for Harrington Commercial's newest luxury developments."

Harrington Commercial Headquarters

The emergency board meeting had become a disaster.

Seven directors.

Four outside legal advisors.

Two crisis-management consultants.

Every television in the room displayed the same headline.

THREATS SENT TO HOSPITALIZED MOTHER AND NEWBORN.

Richard sat at the end of the table.

Silent.

Chairman Leonard Whitmore broke the silence.

"The banks have frozen two of our corporate credit lines."

Richard looked up.

"They can't."

"They already have."

"The insurance carriers?"

"Reviewing their exposure."

"Our investors?"

"They're leaving."

Another director slid a folder across the table.

"Three senior executives resigned this morning."

Richard didn't open it.

He already knew.

The walls were closing in.

Vanessa entered without knocking.

Every eye turned toward her.

She ignored the board completely.

"I need to speak with Richard."

Whitmore stood.

"This is a private meeting."

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"So is the affair your CEO has been hiding for two years."

No one spoke.

Richard's face hardened.

"Leave."

"No."

She threw a folder onto the conference table.

Medical reports.

Blood tests.

Ultrasound images.

Richard's eyes widened.

"What is this?"

"You tell me."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"The doctor called this morning."

Silence.

"I'm not pregnant."

The room froze.

Richard stared at her.

"What?"

"There never was a baby."

His expression emptied.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You promised me a family."

"You promised me we'd raise our daughter together."

She pointed at the reports.

"The pregnancy tests were false positives caused by a hormone disorder."

Another long silence.

"So tell me..."

Her voice cracked.

"...was I just another part of your plan?"

Richard didn't answer.

For the first time since they had met...

Vanessa realized she had never truly known the man standing in front of her.

Cole & Associates

Evelyn rushed into Harrison's temporary command center.

"Harry."

"We identified the paper used for the threat."

"And?"

"It came from a specialty stationery supplier."

"So?"

"There was only one bulk purchase in the last six months."

She handed him the invoice.

The buyer's name made Harrison's eyes narrow.

Sentinel Executive Protection.

The same security company.

Again.

Too many coincidences no longer existed.

Hospital Rooftop

Harrison stood alone beneath the gray morning sky.

Detective Doyle joined him.

"The note changes everything."

"It confirms intent."

"It confirms conspiracy."

Doyle nodded.

"And something else."

He handed Harrison another photograph.

The enhanced courthouse image.

Judge Allison Mercer.

Standing beside Nathan Voss.

Watching.

Waiting.

Harrison studied the picture.

"They knew exactly where Khloe would be."

"Exactly."

"They knew exactly when."

"Yes."

Neither man spoke for a long moment.

Finally Harrison asked,

"Have we identified every phone that connected to the courthouse cell tower that morning?"

Doyle smiled faintly.

"We're working on it."

Harrison shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the city skyline.

"We're too late."

Doyle frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"If they planned everything..."

He turned slowly.

"...they already have another move."

ICU

That afternoon...

Khloe insisted on writing something herself.

A nurse handed her a notebook.

Her hands still shook from the injuries.

Slowly...

Painfully...

She wrote only one sentence.

If anything happens to me... my daughter stays with Harrison.

She signed it.

Dated it.

Then looked at her brother.

"I'm done being afraid."

Harrison carefully folded the paper.

"It won't come to that."

Khloe managed a weak smile.

"I know."

"But if it does..."

She looked through the glass toward the NICU.

"...promise me she'll grow up knowing I fought for her."

He took her hand.

"I promise."

Philadelphia Police Headquarters

Just before sunset, the cybercrime unit finished processing the courthouse cell tower data.

Thousands of phones.

Hundreds of visitors.

One number stood out.

It had connected to the courthouse.

Then the hospital.

Then Harrington Commercial headquarters.

All within four hours.

Registered owner:

Judge Allison Mercer.

Detective Doyle immediately dialed her number.

The call went straight to voicemail.

He called again.

Nothing.

He looked at another detective.

"Send officers to her house."

Twenty-three minutes later, the patrol unit radioed back.

The judge's home was empty.

Her car was gone.

Her passport was missing.

And according to airport security...

A private jet had departed for the Cayman Islands less than an hour earlier.

Doyle closed his eyes.

"We're too late."

Meanwhile...

Far above the Atlantic Ocean...

Judge Allison Mercer looked out the window of the private jet.

Across from her sat Nathan Voss.

He calmly poured two glasses of champagne.

"We bought enough time."

The judge didn't smile.

"What about Harrington?"

Nathan looked at the clouds.

"He thinks he's still in control."

"And is he?"

Nathan's expression remained unreadable.

"No."

"He simply hasn't realized yet..."

"...that he was never the one giving orders."

The judge slowly turned toward him.

"If not Richard..."

"...then who?"

Nathan lifted his glass.

May you like

A faint smile crossed his face.

"You'll meet him soon enough."
