CHAPTER 1 â BLOOD ON THE MARBLE

The first scream came too late.
By the time it echoed across the granite columns of the Montgomery County Courthouse, blood had already begun creeping through the white veins of the marble staircase.
People would later argue over what they had seen.
Some swore it happened in slow motion.
Others insisted it was over in less than two seconds.
Security cameras captured everything without emotion.
The truth was brutally simple.
A woman.
One violent shove.
Thirty unforgiving steps.
And two lives hanging by a thread.
Khloe Harrington stood at the top of the courthouse stairs with one hand resting over the gentle curve of her eight-month-pregnant belly.
She had not come to fight.
She had not come to beg.
She had only come because the hearing scheduled for that morning would determine whether her husband could freeze the last remaining joint assets before their divorce.
The cold October wind tugged at the loose strands of her chestnut hair.
Her navy maternity dress fit tightly across her swollen stomach.
Inside her womb, her daughter shifted softly, almost as if sensing her mother's unease.
Khloe smiled despite everything.
"Just a little longer," she whispered.
"We're almost safe."
The baby answered with a tiny kick.
For a brief moment...
Nothing else mattered.
"Still pretending to be the perfect wife?"
The voice cut through the morning like broken glass.
Khloe closed her eyes before turning.
She already knew who it was.
Vanessa Kensington descended the courthouse steps with the confidence of someone who believed the world belonged to her.
She wore an ivory designer coat draped over a silk dress worth more than many families earned in a month.
Diamond earrings sparkled beneath perfectly styled blonde hair.
Everything about her screamed wealth.
Power.
Victory.
She stopped only inches away.
A slow smile curled across her lips.
"I expected you'd have enough dignity to disappear."
Khloe looked at her quietly.
"I don't want trouble."
"No?"
Vanessa laughed.
"That's funny."
She folded her arms.
"Because you're standing in the middle of my future."
Several attorneys entering the courthouse slowed their pace.
Everyone recognized Richard Harrington's wife.
Many also recognized the woman standing opposite her.
Rumors traveled quickly among Philadelphia's elite.
No one spoke.
No one intervened.
People with expensive suits often preferred entertainment over morality.
Khloe inhaled slowly.
"I have nothing to say to you."
"You should."
Vanessa stepped closer.
"You're still wearing his last name."
Khloe remained silent.
Vanessa's smile widened.
"You know he spent last night with me."
Nothing.
"He picked out our baby's nursery."
Silence.
"He already chose our daughter's school."
Still nothing.
Vanessa frowned.
"I expected tears."
Khloe finally lifted her eyes.
"What you expect doesn't matter anymore."
For the first time...
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"You actually think you've won?"
Khloe's voice stayed calm.
"I don't need to win."
"I only need the truth."
Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.
"The truth?"
She leaned forward until only inches separated them.
"The truth is Richard stopped loving you years ago."
"The truth is he only stayed because divorcing a woman after multiple miscarriages would've looked bad in the media."
Another step.
"The truth is he couldn't even stand touching you."
Khloe's fingers instinctively tightened over her belly.
Every word landed like another knife.
But she refused to cry.
Not here.
Not in front of this woman.
The courthouse doors opened behind them.
Richard Harrington emerged surrounded by two corporate attorneys.
His charcoal suit looked immaculate.
His polished shoes reflected the morning sunlight.
Anyone seeing him from a distance would have mistaken him for a devoted businessman arriving for another successful day.
His eyes immediately found Vanessa.
Then...
They shifted toward Khloe.
No concern.
No warmth.
Only annoyance.
"Richard."
Khloe spoke softly.
He didn't answer.
Instead, Vanessa slipped her hand through his arm.
An unmistakable gesture.
Possession.
Ownership.
Richard made no attempt to pull away.
He simply sighed.
"I told you not to come."
Khloe stared at him.
"This hearing concerns my future too."
"It's business."
"It's our marriage."
"There is no marriage."
The words landed harder than any slap.
Richard glanced toward the growing crowd gathering near the courthouse entrance.
His jaw tightened.
"I don't want a scene."
Khloe looked at him with quiet disbelief.
"You don't want a scene?"
Her hand trembled over the child they had once prayed for together.
"Our daughter is due in four weeks."
"You've emptied our accounts."
"You've filed for divorce."
"And you're standing beside your mistress."
She swallowed.
"But you're worried about a scene?"
Richard looked away.
Vanessa smiled.
"You see?"
She gently squeezed Richard's arm.
"I told you she'd become dramatic."
Something inside Khloe finally broke.
Not loudly.
Not violently.
Just...
Quietly.
She reached into her handbag.
"I brought something."
Richard frowned.
Khloe removed several printed documents.
Bank transfers.
Offshore account summaries.
Corporate filings.
"I know about the shell companies."
Richard froze.
For the first time that morning...
Fear flickered across his face.
Only for an instant.
But Vanessa noticed.
"What is she talking about?"
Richard answered too quickly.
"Nothing."
Khloe looked directly at him.
"I know where the money went."
Silence.
"I know who signed the transfers."
Another silence.
"And I know federal investigators will be interested."
Vanessa slowly turned toward Richard.
"What money?"
Richard stepped forward.
His voice dropped into a dangerous whisper.
"This isn't the place."
"No."
Khloe answered.
"It isn't."
"But you left me no other place."
She held up another document.
"This one shows the account in the Cayman Islands."
Several nearby lawyers glanced toward the papers.
Richard's face drained of color.
"Khloe."
His tone sharpened.
"Put those away."
"No."
Vanessa's eyes darted between them.
"What account?"
Richard ignored her.
"Give me those papers."
Khloe took one careful step backward.
"You've lied long enough."
Everything happened in less than three seconds.
Vanessa's face twisted with panic.
Not anger.
Panic.
If Richard had hidden millions...
If he had lied...
Then what else had he hidden?
Without thinkingâ
She lunged.
"You littleâ"
Her hands struck Khloe squarely in the chest.
The world disappeared.
Khloe felt her balance vanish.
The courthouse sky spun above her.
Her heel slipped off the edge of the top step.
Then gravity took over.
The first impact exploded through her spine.
The second stole her breath.
The third sent unbearable pain through her abdomen.
She tried to protect her baby.
She couldn't.
Her body bounced violently down the marble staircase.
Each impact echoed across the courthouse plaza like a hammer striking stone.
People screamed.
Someone shouted for an ambulance.
Documents scattered into the air like frightened birds.
At the bottomâ
Khloe hit the final step with horrifying force.
Everything became strangely quiet.
Warm liquid spread beneath her.
She looked down.
Blood.
So much blood.
Her vision blurred.
Inside her...
Nothing moved.
Miles away.
On the forty-third floor of Cole & Associates, Manhattan.
Harrison Cole was dismantling the testimony of a Fortune 500 executive during a billion-dollar fraud trial.
The courtroom was silent as he delivered another devastating question.
Thenâ
His phone vibrated once.
Only once.
He never allowed interruptions during trial.
Never.
But something made him look.
The message came from Khloe's emergency medical alert.
CRITICAL FALL DETECTED.
TRAUMA ALERT ACTIVATED.
For the first time in twenty years...
Harrison stopped speaking mid-sentence.
The judge frowned.
"Mr. Cole?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at the screen.
Then at the judge.
His face had turned deathly pale.
"I apologize, Your Honor."
His voice was unnaturally calm.
"My sister is dying."
Without another word, Harrison gathered his briefcase and walked out of the courtroom.
No one tried to stop him.
Because everyone who knew Harrison Cole understood one thing.
He never abandoned a case.
Unless something far more important had just declared war.
Back at the courthouse...
Paramedics fought desperately to stop the bleeding.
One nurse looked up at the monitor.
Her face turned white.
"We're losing the baby."
Khloe's eyes fluttered open for barely a second.
She whispered only one word.
May you like
"Harry..."
Then darkness swallowed her.
