CHAPTER 13 â THE FATHER'S LAST GAMBIT

The satellite image froze on the screen.
A black SUV sped along an abandoned industrial road on the outskirts of Philadelphia.
Nathan Voss enlarged the image.
Vehicle recognition software confirmed it within seconds.
Owner: Richard Harrington.
Estimated arrival:
Nine minutes.
Harrison looked from the screen to Blackwood.
"You said Richard wasn't the one in control."
"He isn't."
"Then why is he going there?"
Blackwood rested both hands on his cane.
"Because desperate men eventually stop following orders."
The Warehouse
Richard slammed on the brakes.
His SUV skidded across cracked concrete before stopping outside a rusted warehouse.
He jumped out before the engine had even died.
A rifle immediately pointed at his chest.
"Stop."
Richard ignored it.
"I'm here for the baby."
The masked guard didn't lower the weapon.
"You weren't invited."
"I don't care."
"I need to speak with whoever's in charge."
The warehouse door slowly creaked open.
A woman stepped into the light.
She wore black tactical clothing.
Her face was partially hidden beneath a hood.
Richard recognized her instantly.
"...Claire?"
Claire Morgan.
Former intelligence officer.
Head of logistics for Sentinel Executive Protection.
He hadn't seen her in almost three years.
"I thought you were dead."
Claire smiled faintly.
"So did everyone else."
Richard took one step forward.
"Give me the baby."
Claire's expression didn't change.
"You've forgotten your place."
"My place?"
"You were hired to protect the operation."
She looked him directly in the eye.
"Not to control it."
Richard's patience snapped.
"I'm Emma's father."
"No."
Claire answered quietly.
"You're merely the man listed on her birth certificate."
Richard froze.
"What?"
Claire stepped aside.
"You should leave."
"I'm not leaving without my daughter."
The smile disappeared from Claire's face.
"She isn't your daughter anymore."
Blackwood Manor
Harrison stared at the torn letter.
"My father knew."
Blackwood nodded.
"He discovered the organization almost thirty years ago."
"What organization?"
The old man walked toward an enormous wall map covered with colored pins.
"Your father believed corruption was local."
"He was wrong."
He pointed to New York.
Then Washington.
Then London.
Then Zurich.
Finally...
Singapore.
"The network isn't one company."
"It isn't one family."
"It isn't even one country."
"It survives because every generation believes it's something different."
Banks.
Construction.
Defense contracts.
Political campaigns.
Private security.
Pharmaceuticals.
The industries changed.
The people changed.
The methods evolved.
"But the organization remained."
Harrison frowned.
"What is it called?"
Blackwood looked at him.
"It has many names."
"But internally..."
He paused.
"They call themselves..."
The Covenant.
Silence filled the underground archive.
Nathan quietly closed the steel cabinet.
"I've spent fifteen years trying to identify every member."
"How many?"
"Officially?"
Blackwood smiled sadly.
"Less than fifty."
"Unofficially..."
"...thousands serve them without realizing it."
Montgomery Medical Center
Khloe awoke screaming.
The nightmare felt real.
She reached toward the empty bassinet beside her bed.
"Emma!"
A nurse hurried inside.
"Mrs. Harringtonâ"
"My daughter!"
Tears streamed down Khloe's face.
"Tell me she's alive."
The nurse hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Khloe understood.
"No..."
Her heart monitor erupted.
She ripped the oxygen tubing from her face.
"I have to find her."
Her fractured ribs protested with every movement.
She didn't care.
Two nurses tried to stop her.
She pushed them away.
"I'm her mother!"
Dr. Sutton entered at a run.
"Khloe!"
"Sit down before you reopen your internal bleeding."
Khloe looked at him through tears.
"You promised she'd be safe."
The doctor lowered his head.
"I know."
Philadelphia Police Headquarters
Detective Doyle refused to slow down.
Every available resource had been deployed.
Helicopters scanned highways.
Drones searched abandoned factories.
K-9 units checked riverbanks.
Thenâ
A young cyber analyst shouted across the room.
"I found it!"
Everyone turned.
"The fake ambulance."
She enlarged traffic-camera footage.
"There."
The stolen ambulance disappeared beneath an overpass.
Thirty-two seconds later...
A black delivery truck emerged.
Same driver.
Same route.
Different vehicle.
Professional.
"They switched cars."
Doyle nodded.
"Track the truck."
The analyst zoomed farther.
"It's heading toward the old shipyards."
The Warehouse
Emma slept peacefully.
Completely unaware of the storm surrounding her life.
Claire gently checked the portable incubator.
The oxygen levels remained stable.
Behind her...
A steel door opened.
Footsteps echoed across the concrete floor.
Everyone immediately stood straighter.
Even the armed guards lowered their heads.
Richard watched in confusion.
One man.
Simple charcoal suit.
Black leather gloves.
No jewelry.
No security detail.
He looked to be in his early fifties.
His face was ordinary.
Forgettable.
That somehow made him even more unsettling.
Claire spoke first.
"Sir."
The man nodded.
"Status."
"The child is healthy."
"And Harrison?"
"Still at Blackwood Manor."
The stranger smiled.
"Good."
Richard stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The man turned slowly.
"You've worked for me for twelve years."
Richard blinked.
"I've never seen you before."
"Exactly."
The stranger walked toward Emma's incubator.
He looked down at the sleeping infant.
Then gently adjusted her blanket.
Almost tenderly.
"I prefer it that way."
Richard's voice shook.
"Why take my daughter?"
The man looked at him.
"Because you're asking the wrong question."
"What?"
"The question isn't why I took her."
He smiled politely.
"It's why I allowed her to live."
Richard's face drained of color.
"What are you talking about?"
The man's eyes became cold.
"Project Phoenix."
"You designed it."
"No..."
Richard whispered.
"You did."
The stranger nodded once.
"Correct."
"I simply allowed you to believe it was your idea."
Blackwood Manor
Harrison's phone rang.
It was Detective Doyle.
"We found the warehouse."
Harrison stood immediately.
"Location?"
"The old Delaware shipyards."
"We're moving."
Doyle's voice stopped him.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"We intercepted a conversation."
"Go on."
"The kidnappers aren't asking for ransom."
"They're not demanding immunity."
"They only keep repeating one sentence."
"What sentence?"
Doyle inhaled slowly.
"They keep saying..."
'Bring Harrison Cole alive.'
The room fell silent.
Nathan looked toward Blackwood.
"So it begins."
Harrison frowned.
"What begins?"
Blackwood walked toward the hidden elevator.
"The final move."
The Warehouse
The stranger stood beside Emma.
Claire handed him a small sealed envelope.
"Recovered from Blackwood's archives."
He opened it.
Inside...
The missing final page of Daniel Cole's letter.
Richard stared.
"You had it all this time?"
The stranger smiled.
"For twenty-eight years."
He unfolded the page.
Read it once.
Then carefully placed it back inside the envelope.
Richard couldn't contain himself.
"Who are you?"
The man looked directly into his eyes.
For the first time...
He answered.
"My name..."
He paused.
"...doesn't matter."
"But your father knew me as..."
He smiled faintly.
"Gabriel."
Richard's knees nearly gave out.
He had heard that name only once.
Years earlier.
Spoken in fear.
Never explained.
Never repeated.
Claire noticed his reaction.
"You know him?"
Richard whispered,
"I know what people say."
"What do they say?"
Richard stared at Gabriel.
"They say..."
May you like
"...when Gabriel personally enters the game..."
"...no one walks away unchanged."
