CHAPTER 14 — THE SHIPYARD TRAP

The convoy raced through the deserted streets just after midnight.

Red and blue lights reflected off abandoned warehouses and rusting shipping containers as Detective Doyle's unmarked SUV led six tactical vehicles toward the old Delaware shipyards.

Harrison sat in the passenger seat, his eyes fixed on the GPS.

Four minutes.

That was all that separated him from Emma.

Or from another carefully prepared trap.

Tactical Command

Doyle switched to the encrypted radio channel.

"All units, listen carefully."

"No one fires unless I give the order."

"Our priority is the infant."

"Secondary objective—capture everyone alive."

Static crackled.

Then one by one the responses came.

"Alpha copies."

"Bravo copies."

"Charlie copies."

A sniper team reported from a nearby water tower.

"We have visual on the warehouse."

"What do you see?" Doyle asked.

A pause.

Then—

"Too quiet."

The Warehouse

Claire Morgan stood beside Emma's portable incubator.

The baby slept peacefully despite the chaos surrounding her.

She looked down at the tiny face and sighed.

"You've caused quite a war, little one."

One of the armed guards approached.

"They're almost here."

Claire nodded.

"I know."

"What are your orders?"

She looked toward the office where Gabriel had disappeared only minutes earlier.

"My orders..."

She hesitated.

"...are to protect the child."

The guard frowned.

"And Harrington?"

Claire's expression remained unreadable.

"He was never the mission."

Three Minutes Earlier

Richard Harrington wandered through the warehouse in confusion.

Every room was empty.

No computers.

No documents.

No money.

No evidence.

It was nothing more than a temporary staging area.

He found Gabriel standing alone on a loading platform overlooking the river.

"You lied to me."

Gabriel didn't turn around.

"I omitted the truth."

"You manipulated me."

"Yes."

Richard clenched his fists.

"My marriage..."

"My company..."

"My daughter..."

"Were they all part of your plan?"

Gabriel slowly faced him.

"You still don't understand."

"I understand enough."

"No."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"You understand almost nothing."

"You wanted wealth."

"I offered you opportunity."

"You wanted power."

"I offered you influence."

"You accepted every gift."

Richard stared at him.

"I trusted you."

"No."

Gabriel corrected gently.

"You trusted your own ambition."

Silence settled between them.

Then Gabriel asked quietly,

"Tell me, Richard..."

"When Khloe suffered her second miscarriage..."

"Who decided to begin Project Phoenix?"

Richard's breathing slowed.

"You did."

Gabriel shook his head.

"No."

"You came to me."

"You asked whether there was a way to protect your fortune."

Richard remembered.

The meeting.

The private club.

The expensive whiskey.

His own words.

If she dies before the divorce... what happens to the estate?

His stomach twisted.

Gabriel hadn't planted the thought.

He had simply answered the question.

"You..."

Richard whispered.

"...never forced me."

Gabriel remained silent.

"You only opened the door."

"And you walked through it."

For the first time in his life...

Richard saw the truth without excuses.

Every betrayal.

Every forged document.

Every stolen dollar.

Every cruel decision.

None of them had been inevitable.

They had been choices.

His choices.

He sank into a chair.

His shoulders collapsed.

"I destroyed my own family."

Gabriel looked at him with neither hatred nor sympathy.

"Yes."

Outside the Warehouse

The tactical team surrounded the building.

Snipers confirmed every exit.

Doyle checked his watch.

"Go."

Steel doors burst inward.

Flashlights swept through the darkness.

"Police!"

"Hands where we can see them!"

The response was immediate.

Gunfire exploded from the upper catwalk.

Bullets ricocheted off steel beams.

Officers returned controlled fire while shields moved toward the center of the building.

Harrison ignored the shouting.

He searched only for one thing.

Emma.

The Nursery Room

Claire heard the shooting.

She looked down at the sleeping baby.

Then at the sealed envelope tucked inside the blanket.

Gabriel's final instruction echoed in her mind.

When Harrison arrives... hand him the child.

A guard rushed inside.

"They've breached the west entrance."

Claire calmly picked up the incubator.

"We're leaving."

"The boss said—"

"I know exactly what he said."

She walked toward a side corridor.

Not toward the escape tunnel.

Toward the main hallway.

Toward Harrison.

The Firefight

Smoke filled the warehouse.

Doyle directed officers from behind a concrete pillar.

"Second floor!"

"Move left!"

One suspect surrendered.

Another fled through a broken window.

A third reached for a detonator.

Before he could press it—

A single sniper round shattered the device in his hand.

The explosion never came.

"Harrison!" Doyle shouted.

"Stay behind cover!"

But Harrison was already moving.

He heard something.

A baby crying.

Faint.

Somewhere beyond the smoke.

The Reunion

He followed the sound into a narrow hallway.

A figure emerged through the haze.

Black tactical clothing.

A pistol holstered at her side.

Portable incubator in her hands.

Claire Morgan stopped five feet away.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally she looked down at Emma.

Then back at Harrison.

"You came."

Harrison's voice was cold.

"Give her to me."

Claire studied his face.

"I expected anger."

"You'll get it later."

"Not today."

Another burst of gunfire echoed behind them.

Claire carefully rolled the incubator forward.

Without hesitation.

Without negotiation.

Without condition.

Harrison looked inside.

Emma slept peacefully.

A tiny bandage still wrapped her fragile wrist.

He reached in with trembling hands.

The moment his finger touched hers—

Her tiny hand closed around it.

Tears blurred his vision.

"You're safe."

He whispered.

"I've got you."

Claire's Decision

She watched silently.

Then removed the envelope from the blanket.

"Gabriel wanted you to have this."

Harrison took it.

"What is it?"

"The last page."

His heartbeat stopped.

"My father's letter?"

Claire nodded.

"He said you'll understand after reading it."

Doyle and several officers rushed into the hallway.

Weapons raised.

"Hands up!"

Claire slowly lifted her hands.

"I surrender."

The officers looked confused.

No resistance.

No escape attempt.

Nothing.

She simply surrendered.

Richard's Choice

Elsewhere in the warehouse...

Richard heard the baby crying.

Then...

Silence.

He smiled through tears.

"She's alive."

He took one step toward the hallway.

Then stopped.

Police voices surrounded the building.

There was nowhere left to run.

For years he had escaped consequences.

Not anymore.

He slowly walked into the open.

Raised both hands.

And waited.

Detective Doyle stared in disbelief.

"Richard Harrington?"

Richard nodded once.

"I'll cooperate."

He looked toward Harrison holding Emma.

Then lowered his eyes.

"I have... a confession."

The Letter

Minutes later, outside the warehouse, paramedics examined Emma while Harrison finally unfolded the missing page.

His father's handwriting continued where it had ended.

The man giving the orders calls himself Gabriel.

That is not his real name.

He has no loyalty except to the Covenant.

If I fail... Harrison, never seek revenge.

Seek the truth.

Because Gabriel is only the face they allow you to see.

The true leader has remained hidden for over fifty years.

His identity is protected by a list known only as...

The Founders' Ledger.

The letter ended with one final sentence.

Whoever possesses the Ledger controls the Covenant.

Harrison slowly lowered the page.

Doyle looked at him.

"What is the Founders' Ledger?"

Before Harrison could answer—

Claire spoke quietly from the back of a police cruiser.

"I know where it is."

Every head turned toward her.

She met Harrison's eyes.

"But if I tell you..."

She glanced toward the dark river.

"...Gabriel won't be the one coming after us."

"Who will?" Harrison asked.

May you like

Claire's voice was barely above a whisper.

"The people Gabriel has been protecting all along."
