CHAPTER 15 â THE LAST WITNESS

The news alert interrupted every television station in Pennsylvania.
BREAKING NEWS
Billionaire Charles Blackwood Found Dead After Fire at Historic Blackwood Manor.
Authorities believe the seventy-eight-year-old financier died from smoke inhalation while attempting to escape the blaze.
The anchor continued speaking.
"...State investigators have not announced any evidence of foul play..."
Harrison muted the television.
The room fell silent.
"No."
He stared at Blackwood's photograph.
"He didn't die in that fire."
Detective Doyle looked up.
"You think someone killed him?"
"I know they did."
Pennsylvania State Police Headquarters
By sunrise, Harrison and Doyle stood inside the temporary command center established for the Blackwood investigation.
Crime scene photographs covered an entire wall.
The burned east wing.
Collapsed ceilings.
Charred furniture.
Blackwood's study.
One image immediately caught Harrison's attention.
"Zoom in."
The forensic technician enlarged the photograph.
Blackwood's body lay beside the fireplace.
His silver cane rested less than a meter away.
Everything appeared consistent with someone trapped during a fire.
Everything...
Except one detail.
"The watch."
Doyle frowned.
"What about it?"
"The crystal isn't cracked."
Everyone looked again.
Blackwood's antique wristwatch had survived intense flames without melting.
Impossible.
Harrison stepped closer.
"He wasn't wearing it when the fire started."
The technician nodded.
"You're right."
"The watch was placed on the body afterward."
"Which means..."
Doyle finished the sentence.
"...someone staged the scene."
Forensic Laboratory
The autopsy began at eight o'clock.
Dr. Lena Brooks carefully examined Blackwood's remains.
She expected smoke damage.
Burn injuries.
Thermal trauma.
Instead...
She found something else.
A tiny puncture wound behind his left ear.
Barely visible.
She called Doyle immediately.
"We have a problem."
"What is it?"
"He didn't die from the fire."
"Cause of death?"
"We're running toxicology."
Two hours later...
The results returned.
Dr. Brooks stared at the report.
Then read it again.
The toxin wasn't commercially available.
It had been synthesized in a laboratory.
Designed to stop the heart within thirty seconds.
No pain.
No struggle.
No obvious signs.
A perfect assassination.
Montgomery Medical Center
For the first time in days...
Khloe held Emma in her arms without machines separating them.
The tiny baby slept peacefully against her mother's chest.
Tears rolled down Khloe's face.
"You came back."
She kissed Emma's forehead.
"I thought I'd lost you."
Harrison quietly entered the room.
He stopped at the doorway.
Watching them.
Neither mother nor daughter noticed.
For one brief moment...
The war outside that room no longer existed.
Only family.
Only love.
Only hope.
Khloe finally looked up.
"You found her."
Harrison smiled softly.
"We found each other."
Khloe noticed the exhaustion in his eyes.
"What happened?"
He hesitated.
"Blackwood is dead."
Her smile faded.
"I thought he was our enemy."
"He was."
"And yet..."
Harrison looked out the window.
"...he was also our last witness."
Interrogation Room Three
Richard Harrington sat alone.
No expensive suit.
No luxury office.
No assistants.
Only a gray prison uniform.
Detective Doyle entered carrying a recorder.
Richard looked up.
"I'm ready."
"For what?"
"To tell the truth."
Doyle sat opposite him.
"Start at the beginning."
Richard closed his eyes.
"I met Gabriel twelve years ago."
Twelve Years Earlier
Richard had just become CEO of Harrington Commercial.
Young.
Ambitious.
Hungry.
A mutual acquaintance invited him to an exclusive dinner.
No cameras.
No journalists.
No publicity.
Only eight guests.
At the end of the evening...
A man introduced himself simply as Gabriel.
"He knew everything about me."
Richard whispered.
"My debts."
"My ambitions."
"My fears."
"He said successful men never succeed alone."
"He offered help."
"What kind of help?" Doyle asked.
Richard laughed bitterly.
"The kind that destroys your soul one small compromise at a time."
First...
A favorable zoning decision.
Then...
A government contract.
Then...
A judge willing to delay a lawsuit.
Every favor carried one condition.
Nothing illegal.
At first.
Years later...
The requests changed.
Hide this payment.
Move this account.
Sign this report.
Silence this witness.
Richard looked at his own trembling hands.
"I kept telling myself..."
"Just one more time."
"There was always..."
"One more time."
Cole & Associates
Claire Morgan agreed to cooperate.
In exchange for federal protection.
She sat across from Harrison inside a secure interview room.
"I never joined the Covenant."
"You worked for them."
"I worked for Gabriel."
"There's a difference."
Harrison folded his arms.
"Explain."
Claire took a deep breath.
"Gabriel isn't the leader."
"I know."
"He's the Keeper."
"The Keeper?"
"He protects the organization."
"He recruits."
"He eliminates threats."
"He never makes policy."
"So who does?"
Claire shook her head.
"No one knows."
"Not even Gabriel."
The room became quiet.
"What do you mean?"
"The Covenant is governed by twelve people."
"They never meet together."
"They never use their real names."
"They communicate through one document."
"The Founders' Ledger."
The Ledger
Claire leaned forward.
"Everyone thinks it's a book."
"It isn't."
"What is it?"
"A key."
Harrison frowned.
"A key to what?"
"I don't know."
"But every Keeper protects it."
"And every generation..."
"...someone dies trying to find it."
Blackwood Manor
Forensic investigators continued searching through the burned underground archive.
Most records had been destroyed.
But not all.
A young evidence technician called out.
"Detective!"
Doyle hurried over.
"What did you find?"
Beneath a collapsed steel shelf...
A fireproof safe.
The door had warped from the heat.
Inside rested only one item.
A cassette tape.
Handwritten label.
FOR HARRISON ONLY
That Evening
Harrison inserted the tape into an old recorder recovered from Blackwood's office.
Static filled the room.
Then...
Blackwood's voice.
Calm.
Measured.
Older than Harrison remembered.
"If you're hearing this..."
"Then I am already dead."
Harrison looked at Doyle.
Neither spoke.
The recording continued.
"No one leaves the Covenant alive."
"Not even those who serve it."
Blackwood coughed softly.
"I have done terrible things."
"Things I will answer for before God."
"But there is one truth you must understand."
A pause.
Thenâ
"Your father never lost."
Harrison's eyes widened.
Another pause.
"Daniel Cole succeeded."
Silence.
"What?"
Harrison whispered.
The tape continued.
"He hid the Ledger before they could recover it."
Doyle stared at Harrison.
Blackwood's voice grew weaker.
"That is why they killed him."
Another pause.
"And that..."
"Is why they are hunting Emma."
The room went completely silent.
Harrison's blood ran cold.
He looked at the sleeping baby on the monitor connected to the hospital security feed.
"No..."
Blackwood's final words echoed through the recorder.
"The Ledger was never hidden in a place."
A long breath.
"It was hidden..."
Static interrupted the sentence.
The tape crackled violently.
Then stopped.
The ribbon inside had melted from fire damage.
The final words were gone.
Midnight
Harrison sat alone in the dark.
Blackwood's unfinished sentence repeated in his mind.
The Ledger was never hidden in a place...
Then where?
His phone vibrated.
A text message.
Unknown number.
Only one photograph.
It showed Emma sleeping peacefully in Khloe's arms.
At first, Harrison thought it was another threat.
Then he noticed something.
Around Emma's tiny wrist...
The hospital identification bracelet had been removed.
In its place...
Someone had tied a thin silver bracelet.
He enlarged the image.
Tiny letters were engraved inside.
D.C.
Daniel Cole.
His father.
His heartbeat accelerated.
He immediately called Khloe.
"Don't take the bracelet off."
"What?"
"Listen to me."
His voice became urgent.
"Whatever you do..."
"Don't let anyone remove that bracelet."
"Harry..."
"What is it?"
He stared at the photograph.
Finally understanding the beginning of a truth hidden for nearly three decades.
May you like
"I think..."
"...Dad left Emma something."
