CHAPTER 3 — THE FIRST THREAD UNRAVELS

The fingerprint report arrived at 2:17 a.m.

Detective Marcus Doyle stared at the name printed across the top of the forensic analysis.

For a long moment, he didn't move.

Then he read it again.

Fingerprint Match: Melissa Grant.

Richard Harrington's executive assistant.

Employed for twelve years.

Authorized access to every executive office.

Every financial file.

Every corporate safe.

Every confidential document.

Doyle slowly picked up the phone.

"Wake the district attorney."

"We're expanding this investigation."

Intensive Care Unit

The rhythmic beeping of heart monitors filled the dimly lit room.

Khloe lay motionless beneath crisp white sheets.

Bruises bloomed across her face and shoulders.

A ventilator breathed for her.

Dozens of tubes disappeared beneath the blanket.

The woman who had walked into the courthouse only hours earlier now looked almost unrecognizable.

Outside the glass wall, Harrison stood without speaking.

He had not changed his bloodstained suit.

Khloe's fingerprints—made with her own blood—still marked the lapel.

He refused to let anyone clean it.

Not yet.

A nurse approached cautiously.

"Mr. Cole... you should get some rest."

He didn't look away from the window.

"When she wakes up."

"That could take days."

"Then I'll rest in days."

The nurse understood there would be no convincing him.

She quietly walked away.

Across the hall...

Inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit...

A tiny baby lay inside a transparent incubator.

She weighed barely four pounds.

A breathing tube rested between impossibly small lips.

Her chest rose and fell with mechanical assistance.

Machines surrounded her like silent guardians.

Harrison stepped inside.

The neonatal nurse smiled gently.

"She's stronger than we expected."

He looked down at the little girl.

"So small..."

"Premature babies can surprise us."

Harrison carefully slipped one finger through the opening of the incubator.

The infant's tiny hand instinctively wrapped around it.

His breath caught.

For the first time since receiving the emergency alert...

Something inside him softened.

"Hello, little one."

His voice was almost inaudible.

"I'm your Uncle Harry."

"You don't know me yet..."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"But I made your mother a promise a long time ago."

He gently squeezed her tiny hand.

"And now I'm making the same promise to you."

"No one will ever hurt you again."

Harrington Commercial Group

At exactly eight o'clock the next morning, the boardroom doors closed.

Twelve directors sat around a polished walnut table.

Richard Harrington entered looking immaculate.

Not a wrinkle on his suit.

Not a strand of hair out of place.

Only the dark circles beneath his eyes hinted that anything had happened.

Board Chairman Leonard Whitmore spoke first.

"Richard."

No greeting.

No pleasantries.

"Explain yesterday."

Richard remained standing.

"It was a tragic accident."

Several directors exchanged glances.

One slid a tablet across the table.

The courthouse surveillance video began playing.

No audio.

None was needed.

Vanessa shoved.

Khloe fell.

Gasps echoed around the room.

The video stopped.

Silence.

Finally, one director spoke.

"The media doesn't believe it was an accident."

Richard folded his arms.

"The media isn't qualified to determine facts."

"The stock fell twenty-three percent."

Another director leaned forward.

"Three institutional investors have suspended negotiations."

A third added quietly,

"And the Attorney General has requested copies of our financial statements."

Richard's expression remained controlled.

"They're fishing."

"They won't find anything."

No one looked convinced.

Philadelphia Police Headquarters

Melissa Grant arrived wearing a gray business suit.

She had come voluntarily.

She expected a routine interview.

Instead...

Detective Doyle placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.

Inside sat Khloe's prescription bottle.

Melissa frowned.

"I've never seen that."

Doyle slid another document across.

"The fingerprints say otherwise."

She looked down.

Her face lost all color.

"That's impossible."

"Our lab disagrees."

Melissa swallowed hard.

"I... I must have touched it accidentally."

"When?"

"I don't remember."

"You don't remember handling your employer's pregnant wife's medication?"

Silence.

Doyle leaned back.

"I'll ask again."

"When?"

Melissa's breathing became uneven.

She looked toward the one-way mirror.

As though hoping someone would rescue her.

No one came.

Harrison's Office

By noon, Harrison had transformed an empty conference room inside the hospital into a temporary war room.

Three laptops.

Financial analysts.

Private investigators.

Former federal prosecutors.

Every person sitting around the table had worked with Harrison before.

Every one of them had helped dismantle billion-dollar corporations.

No one asked why they had been summoned.

The answer lay upstairs fighting for her life.

Harrison entered.

The room instantly fell silent.

He placed a single photograph on the table.

Khloe.

Smiling.

Pregnant.

Taken only three weeks earlier.

"This..."

He looked around the room.

"...is why you're here."

No speeches.

No dramatic introductions.

Only facts.

"I want every transaction Harrington Commercial has made during the last five years."

"Every offshore account."

"Every shell corporation."

"Every deleted email."

He looked directly at his lead investigator.

"Assume nothing."

"Question everything."

The investigator nodded.

"Deadline?"

Harrison answered without hesitation.

"Forty-eight hours."

Several people blinked.

Normally that amount of forensic accounting required months.

Harrison simply added,

"If you need more people..."

"Hire them."

"If you need more money..."

"Spend it."

"I don't care what it costs."

"I care who survives."

ICU

Late that afternoon...

A nurse noticed something unusual.

"Doctor!"

Dr. Sutton hurried into Khloe's room.

"What happened?"

The nurse pointed toward the monitor.

"Brain activity."

Khloe's fingers had moved.

Barely.

Almost imperceptibly.

Dr. Sutton leaned closer.

"Khloe?"

No response.

Then—

A tear escaped the corner of Khloe's closed eye.

The doctor smiled.

"She's hearing us."

Meanwhile...

Richard sat alone inside his private office.

The television remained muted.

Every news channel showed the same image.

Khloe lying in a pool of blood.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown Number.

He answered.

"Richard Harrington."

A calm female voice spoke.

"She survived."

Richard's grip tightened.

"Who is this?"

"You should be relieved."

The call disconnected.

He immediately called back.

No answer.

For the first time...

A feeling he had not experienced in years settled into his chest.

Fear.

Not fear of prison.

Not fear of losing money.

Fear of Harrison Cole.

Because if Khloe lived...

She could testify.

And Harrison would never stop until every secret buried beneath Harrington Commercial was dragged into the light.

Philadelphia Police Headquarters

Melissa Grant finally broke.

Tears streamed down her face.

"I didn't know..."

Detective Doyle remained silent.

"I swear... I didn't know anyone would get hurt."

He slowly leaned forward.

"What didn't you know?"

She buried her face in trembling hands.

"I only switched the bottle because..."

Her voice cracked.

"...because Mr. Harrington told me to."

The room fell silent.

Doyle pressed the recorder closer.

"Tell me exactly what Richard Harrington ordered you to do."

Melissa looked up, her eyes filled with terror.

"He said the prenatal vitamins were making Khloe suspicious..."

"He handed me another bottle..."

"And he told me no one would ever notice."

Doyle's heartbeat quickened.

"What was inside?"

"I... I never asked."

She began crying harder.

"I thought they were sleeping pills."

"I never imagined..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Doyle stood immediately.

"Get this statement typed."

"And notify the district attorney."

As officers rushed from the room, his phone rang.

It was the hospital.

Dr. Sutton spoke quickly.

"Detective..."

"Khloe Harrington just regained consciousness."

Doyle grabbed his coat.

"Can she talk?"

There was a brief pause.

"She said only three words."

"What words?"

Dr. Sutton's voice turned grave.

May you like

"She whispered..."

'He planned everything.'
