CHAPTER 12 â THE ABDUCTION

The world stopped.
Harrison couldn't breathe.
He gripped the phone so tightly that the screen cracked beneath his fingers.
"What did you say?"
On the other end of the line, Detective Doyle's breathing was ragged.
"They hit the hospital."
"They came in through the loading dock wearing paramedic uniforms."
"We intercepted one team."
"But another team reached the NICU."
Harrison's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Emma..."
There was a long pause.
"She's gone."
The words echoed through the great hall of Blackwood Manor.
Charles Blackwood slowly closed his eyes.
"So..."
"They finally made their move."
Harrison spun toward him.
"You knew this was coming."
"I suspected."
"You used my family as bait!"
Blackwood met his furious stare without flinching.
"No."
"I underestimated how desperate they had become."
Another explosion shook the manor.
Smoke began pouring beneath the library doors.
Nathan Voss rushed inside, his suit covered in soot.
"Sir."
"The east wing is fully engulfed."
Blackwood looked toward the flames.
"They're destroying the archives."
Nathan nodded.
"They knew exactly where to strike."
Harrison froze.
"They're after the records."
Blackwood looked at him.
"And your father's letter."
Montgomery Medical Center
Only twenty minutes earlier...
The maternity floor had been unusually quiet.
Nurse Olivia was checking Emma's oxygen levels when two paramedics entered the NICU.
Their uniforms were spotless.
Their identification badges appeared authentic.
One smiled politely.
"We're here to transfer the infant for emergency imaging."
Olivia frowned.
"I wasn't notified."
The taller paramedic handed her a tablet.
"System outage."
"The order came directly from Dr. Sutton."
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
Olivia reached for the hospital phone.
"I'll confirm with the doctor."
The shorter paramedic's smile disappeared.
He quietly locked the NICU door.
Olivia's heart skipped.
"What are you doing?"
The answer came in the form of a suppressed gunshot.
The security camera above the incubators shattered.
Darkness filled half the room.
The taller man pulled a syringe from his pocket.
"Don't scream."
Olivia grabbed the emergency alarm.
She never reached it.
The syringe pierced her shoulder.
Within seconds...
Her legs gave out.
The last thing she saw before losing consciousness was one of the men lifting Emma from the incubator.
Seven Minutes Later
The entire hospital erupted into chaos.
Armed officers stormed the maternity floor.
Doctors rushed terrified parents into secured rooms.
Detective Doyle sprinted toward the NICU.
The electronic lock had been welded shut from the inside.
"Move!"
A tactical officer swung a steel battering ram.
The door burst open.
Inside...
Incubators remained untouched.
Monitors still beeped.
Blankets lay scattered across the floor.
Nurse Olivia struggled to sit upright.
Her voice was barely audible.
"They..."
She pointed weakly toward the emergency stairwell.
"...took the baby."
Blackwood Manor
Harrison stuffed his father's letter inside his jacket.
"We're leaving."
Blackwood shook his head.
"No."
"They're expecting exactly that."
"I don't care."
"You should."
Blackwood slowly walked toward an enormous portrait hanging above the fireplace.
He pressed the carved wooden frame.
A section of the wall slid open.
Behind it...
A hidden elevator.
Nathan looked surprised.
"You never told me about this."
Blackwood smiled faintly.
"I've learned not to tell anyone everything."
He looked at Harrison.
"Come with me."
"I don't trust you."
"You don't have to."
"But if you leave through the front door..."
"...the men waiting outside will kill you before you reach your car."
Almost as if on cueâ
Gunfire erupted outside the manor.
Bullets shattered the front windows.
Someone was already there.
Pennsylvania State Police
Doyle stood inside the command vehicle.
Every available officer had been mobilized.
Roadblocks.
Helicopters.
State troopers.
Amber Alerts.
The entire state was searching for a baby who weighed less than five pounds.
An analyst rushed toward him.
"We recovered hospital surveillance."
"Show me."
The footage played.
Two fake paramedics entered.
Three minutes later...
They exited carrying an infant transport incubator.
No one stopped them.
They loaded it into an ambulance.
The license plate looked genuine.
The ambulance...
Wasn't.
The registration belonged to a vehicle destroyed in a junkyard three years earlier.
Professional.
Planned.
Meticulous.
Doyle's phone rang.
"Forensics."
"We found something inside the NICU."
"What?"
"A tiny recording device."
His heartbeat quickened.
"They bugged the room?"
"No."
"Worse."
"It had been transmitting live audio for nearly forty-eight hours."
Someone had been listening.
To every conversation.
Every medical update.
Every security briefing.
Every moment Khloe whispered to her daughter.
Underground Beneath Blackwood Manor
The hidden elevator descended nearly fifty feet.
When the doors opened...
Harrison stared in disbelief.
It wasn't a bunker.
It was an underground archive.
Thousands of boxes.
Shelves stretching into darkness.
Old court files.
Corporate records.
Political correspondence.
Blackwood noticed his expression.
"I've spent sixty years collecting secrets."
"Insurance?"
"No."
"History."
Nathan quietly added,
"And leverage."
Blackwood smiled.
"Sometimes they're the same thing."
He led Harrison to a steel cabinet marked:
PROJECT ORACLE
The old man unlocked it.
Inside were dozens of leather binders.
He removed one.
Across the cover was a familiar name.
HARRINGTON COMMERCIAL GROUP
Another binder.
COLE FAMILY
Then another.
SENTINEL EXECUTIVE PROTECTION
Harrison looked up.
"You've been documenting all of them."
"For decades."
"Why?"
Blackwood's expression darkened.
"Because someday..."
"...someone honest would come looking."
An Abandoned Warehouse
Emma cried softly.
The sound echoed through the empty building.
A masked woman gently adjusted the oxygen line attached to the portable incubator.
"Easy, little one."
"We're almost there."
A man entered carrying a satellite phone.
"Call."
She answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
"Status."
"The child is secure."
"And Harrison?"
"Still alive."
Silence.
Thenâ
"Good."
The woman frowned.
"I thought the objective was to eliminate him."
The voice replied calmly,
"No."
"We need him."
"For what?"
Another pause.
"To finish what his father started."
The call ended.
The woman stared at the sleeping infant.
Confusion crossed her face.
For the first time...
She wasn't sure whose side she was on.
Blackwood Manor
Deep underground...
Harrison finally unfolded his father's letter.
The paper had yellowed with age.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
He began to read.
My son,
If you're reading this, I failed.
Not because I lacked courage...
But because I trusted the wrong people.
His hands trembled.
He continued.
The bridge was never the real project.
It was only a test.
The men behind it were building something much larger.
A network powerful enough to control courts, banks, elections... and governments.
Harrison's pulse raced.
He turned the page.
The next sentence made his blood run cold.
The leader isn't Charles Blackwood.
Blackwood works for him.
His name is...
The final line had been ripped away.
Cleanly.
Deliberately.
Half the page was missing.
Harrison looked up in disbelief.
"This was torn."
Blackwood slowly nodded.
"Yes."
"Who took it?"
The old man's face hardened.
May you like
"The same man..."
"...who just stole your niece."
