CHAPTER 5 â THE DEAD MAN'S FILE

The rain never stopped.
It washed over Philadelphia in relentless sheets, turning the city's glass towers into blurred silhouettes.
From the forty-second floor of Cole & Associates, Harrison watched the storm without seeing it.
Behind him, the conference room had become the nerve center of a war.
Six cyber analysts.
Three forensic accountants.
Two former FBI financial investigators.
One retired federal prosecutor.
Every computer screen glowed with bank records, encrypted servers, shell corporations, and surveillance footage.
No one spoke unless absolutely necessary.
Harrison demanded facts.
Not theories.
Not guesses.
Facts.
10:43 P.M.
A young cyber analyst suddenly leaned forward.
"I've got something."
Every head turned.
His fingers flew across the keyboard.
"There was a hidden server connected to Harrington Commercial's internal network."
He enlarged the screen.
"It wasn't listed in any corporate inventory."
"Military-grade encryption."
"Someone wanted this buried."
Harrison stepped beside him.
"Can you open it?"
The analyst gave a thin smile.
"I already did."
A folder appeared.
Its title froze the room.
PRIVATE â R.H.
Inside were dozens of encrypted files.
Financial statements.
Contracts.
Audio recordings.
Videos.
Thenâ
One filename stood out.
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO KHLOE.mp4
Silence swallowed the room.
No one reached for the mouse.
Harrison did.
He clicked.
The Video
The recording began inside Richard Harrington's private office.
The date stamp showed it had been recorded almost three months earlier.
Richard sat behind his desk.
A crystal glass of whiskey rested beside him.
Across from him sat Vanessa Kensington.
She looked nervous.
"What if she refuses to sign?"
Richard smiled.
It wasn't warm.
It wasn't kind.
It was the smile of a man discussing numbers on a spreadsheet.
"She'll sign."
"And if she doesn't?"
Richard took another sip.
"Then circumstances will force her."
Vanessa frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Richard leaned back.
"Accidents happen."
The room fell completely silent.
Even the cyber analysts stopped breathing.
On the screen, Vanessa laughed nervously.
"You're joking."
Richard didn't laugh.
"If anything ever happens to Khloe..."
He slowly rotated the whiskey glass.
"...everyone will believe it was stress."
"She's had miscarriages."
"She's emotionally fragile."
"Pregnancy complications aren't unusual."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You'd never..."
Richard interrupted.
"I said accidents."
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
The video ended.
No one in the conference room moved.
Finally, the retired federal prosecutor whispered,
"My God..."
One of the investigators looked physically sick.
"That's conspiracy."
The forensic accountant shook his head.
"No."
"Worse."
Harrison remained expressionless.
But those who knew him understood exactly what that silence meant.
He looked at Evelyn.
"Make three copies."
She nodded.
"One for the District Attorney."
"One for the Attorney General."
"One stays with us."
"And the original?"
Harrison closed the laptop.
"No one touches it except me."
Montgomery Medical Center
Khloe woke again shortly after midnight.
The pain had dulled.
The emptiness had not.
Her hand instinctively reached for her stomach.
It was flat.
Her breath caught.
Panic flooded her eyes.
Dr. Sutton immediately stepped beside the bed.
"Easy."
"Your daughter is alive."
Khloe closed her eyes.
"Can..."
Her voice cracked.
"...can I see her?"
The doctor hesitated.
"Tomorrow."
"She's still very fragile."
Khloe nodded weakly.
One tear rolled across the pillow.
"I thought..."
She swallowed.
"I thought I lost her."
"You almost did."
The honesty surprised her.
"But she fought."
"So did you."
The room became quiet.
Then Khloe whispered,
"Richard..."
Dr. Sutton looked toward the door.
"Detective Doyle is waiting if you're ready."
Khloe stared at the ceiling.
"No."
"Not yet."
"I want Harry first."
One Hour Later
Harrison entered alone.
He pulled a chair beside her bed.
Neither spoke immediately.
Finallyâ
"I'm sorry."
Khloe looked confused.
"For what?"
"I should have seen it sooner."
She managed a faint smile.
"You always blamed yourself."
"When I scraped my knee."
"When I failed my math test."
"When Dad..."
She stopped herself.
The memory still hurt.
Harrison looked down.
"I promised I'd protect you."
"You did."
She reached for his hand.
"I just didn't listen."
For several moments...
Neither spoke.
Then Khloe looked into his eyes.
"There was something I never told you."
Harrison straightened.
"What?"
"The night Richard found out I was pregnant..."
She paused.
"I woke up around two in the morning."
"He wasn't beside me."
"I went downstairs."
Her breathing became uneven.
"I heard him talking."
"To whom?"
"I couldn't see."
"But I heard one sentence."
She closed her eyes.
"He said..."
"Once the baby is born... everything becomes easier."
The room fell silent.
Harrison's jaw tightened.
"What did you think he meant?"
"I thought..."
A tear escaped.
"I thought he meant our family."
She laughed bitterly.
"I was so stupid."
"No."
Harrison's voice was gentle.
"You trusted your husband."
"That's not stupidity."
"That's love."
Harrington Commercial Headquarters
Richard hadn't slept.
Every television station carried the same story.
ATTEMPTED MURDER AT HOSPITAL.
POLICE SEARCH FOR MASKED INTRUDER.
His phone rang.
Board Chairman Leonard Whitmore.
"You need to resign."
Richard remained calm.
"No."
"The board voted unanimously."
"I own thirty-eight percent."
"You owned thirty-eight percent."
Silence.
"What?"
"The institutional investors sold."
Richard stood abruptly.
"To who?"
Another pause.
"They wouldn't say."
The call disconnected.
For the first time in his career...
Richard felt the ground shift beneath him.
Someone...
Was buying his company.
Quietly.
Systematically.
Cole & Associates
Evelyn entered Harrison's office carrying a thick folder.
"The market opened early in Europe."
"And?"
"Our investment partners acquired twelve percent overnight."
Harrison nodded.
"Continue."
"Another fifteen percent is available if we're willing to pay a premium."
"And Richard?"
"He doesn't know you're the buyer."
A faint smile appeared.
The first in days.
"Good."
Evelyn hesitated.
"Harry..."
"This is becoming personal."
He looked toward the hospital across the river.
"It always was."
Philadelphia Police Department
Detective Doyle received an urgent call from the crime laboratory.
"We identified the substance inside the broken syringe."
"It wasn't only potassium chloride."
"What else?"
"There were traces of midazolam."
Doyle frowned.
"A sedative?"
"Yes."
The forensic scientist paused.
"Someone wanted Khloe unconscious..."
"...before stopping her heart."
Doyle slowly lowered the phone.
This wasn't panic.
This wasn't revenge.
Every detail had been calculated.
Every step planned.
Someone had expected Khloe to die without ever speaking another word.
ICU
Just before dawn...
Khloe finally fell into peaceful sleep.
Harrison stood beside the window watching the sunrise paint the city gold.
His phone vibrated.
A text from his lead cyber analyst.
You need to see this immediately.
Attached was a single screenshot recovered from Richard's hidden server.
An unsigned legal document.
Its title read:
LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF KHLOE HARRINGTON
Harrison frowned.
Khloe had never written a will.
He opened the file.
The signature at the bottom looked exactly like his sister's.
But it wasn't.
Someone had forged it.
The beneficiary of nearly every asset...
Was Richard Harrington.
Harrison's eyes darkened.
The conspiracy had begun long before the courthouse steps.
Long before the affair.
Long before the divorce.
Someone had been planning for Khloe's death...
For months.
Maybe years.
He quietly closed the document.
Then looked toward his sleeping sister.
May you like
"I know your game now, Richard."
"And I'm going to make sure the entire world knows it too."
