CHAPTER 11 — BLACKWOOD MANOR

The call lasted exactly nine seconds.

No greeting.

No threat shouted in anger.

Only the calm, measured voice of an elderly man.

"If you want the truth about your parents... come alone to Blackwood Manor tomorrow night. Bring no police—or you'll lose your sister before sunrise."

The line went dead.

Harrison stared at the phone for several seconds.

Every instinct he possessed told him it was a trap.

But another instinct—older, deeper—told him something else.

For the first time in twenty-eight years...

Someone had finally invited him to the truth.

Cole & Associates

The emergency meeting began at once.

Detective Doyle stood at the head of the conference table.

"It's a setup."

"No question."

"They know you're getting close."

One of Harrison's investigators nodded.

"They're trying to separate you from Khloe."

"We can wire the property."

"Deploy surveillance."

"Bring SWAT."

Another voice added,

"Or we simply don't go."

Silence followed.

Everyone looked toward Harrison.

He hadn't spoken once.

Finally...

He stood.

"If Blackwood wanted me dead..."

He looked around the room.

"...I would already be dead."

Nobody argued.

Because everyone knew he was right.

A man capable of orchestrating murders over decades didn't need dramatic invitations.

He simply made people disappear.

"I'll go."

Doyle immediately shook his head.

"Not alone."

"The caller demanded it."

"And criminals lie."

Harrison looked directly at him.

"So do frightened men."

The detective frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

Harrison picked up the photograph of Charles Blackwood.

"...I don't think he's frightened."

"I think he wants something."

Montgomery Medical Center

Khloe had been moved out of intensive care.

The room was brighter.

Quieter.

For the first time since the courthouse attack, fresh flowers sat beside the window.

Emma's latest ultrasound photo rested on the bedside table.

Khloe smiled as Harrison entered.

"You look terrible."

He almost laughed.

"So do you."

She looked at him carefully.

"No."

"I look like someone recovering."

"You..."

"...look like someone carrying the world."

He pulled a chair beside her bed.

"There may be something I need to do tonight."

Khloe's smile disappeared.

"It's dangerous."

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

She reached for his hand.

"Harry..."

"When we were children..."

"You remember thunderstorms?"

He nodded.

"You always counted between lightning and thunder."

"So I wouldn't be scared."

A faint smile crossed her face.

"You used to tell me..."

She closed her eyes, remembering.

"Fear only wins if it makes you stop walking."

She looked back at him.

"You said that."

"So don't stop walking."

His throat tightened.

"You still remember?"

"I remember everything."

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Emma weighed four pounds and six ounces.

She no longer required a breathing tube.

Only a small oxygen cannula remained beneath her tiny nose.

The nurses celebrated every improvement.

Harrison stood beside the incubator.

Emma opened her eyes.

Deep blue.

Just like Khloe's.

He gently touched her tiny hand.

"I'll be back."

She instinctively wrapped her fingers around his.

He smiled.

"You really are your mother's daughter."

Harrington Estate

Richard hadn't left the house in two days.

The curtains remained closed.

His phone rang.

Nathan Voss.

Richard answered immediately.

"What now?"

Nathan's voice remained emotionless.

"Mr. Blackwood wishes to see Harrison tonight."

Richard stood abruptly.

"You're bringing him to the manor?"

"Yes."

Richard's pulse quickened.

"That's a mistake."

"No."

"You don't understand Harrison Cole."

Nathan paused.

"I understand him very well."

Richard lowered his voice.

"If Harrison learns the truth..."

Nathan interrupted.

"He already has."

The call ended.

Richard stared at the silent phone.

Then whispered to himself,

"God help us all..."

Pennsylvania State Police

Detective Doyle wasn't taking chances.

Officially...

He respected Harrison's decision.

Unofficially...

He assigned six plainclothes officers to every entrance of Montgomery Medical Center.

Two officers outside Khloe's room.

Four more surrounding the NICU.

He personally inspected every security camera.

Every emergency exit.

Every visitor log.

A young officer approached.

"Detective?"

"What is it?"

"We've verified every nurse on duty."

"And?"

"One name doesn't match."

Doyle froze.

"What do you mean?"

"A temporary agency nurse checked in thirty minutes ago."

"We can't verify her employment."

His expression darkened.

"Find her."

Blackwood Manor

Night fell over the Pennsylvania countryside.

Hidden behind ancient oak trees stood a sprawling stone estate that looked more like a fortress than a home.

Blackwood Manor had existed long before modern roads reached the valley.

Iron gates rose nearly fifteen feet high.

Security cameras watched every approach.

Yet when Harrison's black sedan arrived...

The gates opened automatically.

No guards appeared.

No questions were asked.

Someone had been expecting him.

He drove slowly along the winding driveway.

The mansion finally emerged from the darkness.

Massive.

Silent.

Its windows glowed with warm golden light.

Almost welcoming.

That somehow made it even more unsettling.

A butler waited at the front entrance.

"Mr. Cole."

He bowed slightly.

"Mr. Blackwood has been expecting you."

"I know."

"This way."

Inside...

The manor resembled a museum.

Oil paintings.

Ancient clocks.

Marble fireplaces.

Portraits of powerful men spanning more than a century.

Every hallway whispered old money.

Old influence.

Old secrets.

The butler stopped before enormous double doors.

"He'll see you now."

The doors opened.

Charles Blackwood sat alone before a roaring fireplace.

A chessboard rested between two leather chairs.

He didn't rise.

He didn't offer his hand.

Instead...

He calmly moved a white bishop across the board.

"You're late."

Harrison remained standing.

"I arrived exactly on time."

Blackwood smiled faintly.

"You have your mother's stubbornness."

Harrison's expression hardened.

"You knew my mother."

"I knew both your parents."

Silence.

"I also knew..."

He looked directly into Harrison's eyes.

"...they were going to die."

Every muscle in Harrison's body went rigid.

"What did you say?"

Blackwood leaned back.

"I warned Daniel Cole."

"I told him to sign the engineering report."

"He refused."

"He believed the law would protect him."

The old man slowly shook his head.

"He overestimated the law."

Harrison took one step forward.

"You murdered them."

"No."

Blackwood answered without emotion.

"I gave the order."

The room became deathly silent.

"I never touched the brakes."

"I never drove the truck."

"But yes..."

His voice remained perfectly calm.

"Their deaths happened because of a decision I made."

Harrison's fists clenched.

For the first time in decades...

His legendary self-control nearly broke.

Blackwood noticed.

"Sit down."

"I'll stand."

"As you wish."

The old man folded his hands over the silver handle of his cane.

"You're wondering why I invited you here."

"I already know why."

"Oh?"

"You think confessing makes you untouchable."

Blackwood smiled.

"No."

"I invited you..."

"...because you're asking the wrong question."

Harrison stared at him.

"The wrong question?"

"You keep asking..."

"'Who killed my parents?'"

He slowly moved another chess piece.

"But the real question is..."

"'Why did Daniel Cole refuse to sign?'"

The old man reached into a leather folder beside his chair.

He removed a thick envelope.

Yellow with age.

The seal remained unbroken.

"I've kept this for twenty-eight years."

He placed it on the chessboard.

"It's addressed to you."

Harrison looked down.

The handwriting stopped his heart.

It belonged to his father.

Across the front were six words.

For Harrison. When He's Ready.

Harrison's fingers trembled as he reached for the envelope.

Blackwood did not stop him.

"You'll find your father's final report."

"The names of every executive involved."

"The politicians they bribed."

"The judges they owned."

"And..."

He paused.

"The one name you still haven't discovered."

Harrison looked up.

"Whose name?"

Blackwood's eyes grew strangely distant.

"The man..."

"...who gave me the order."

For the first time that night...

The old man looked tired.

Not frightened.

Not defeated.

Simply...

Old.

Harrison slowly opened the envelope.

Inside lay a handwritten letter.

Before he could read the first line—

A deafening explosion shattered the silence.

BOOM!

The manor shook violently.

Glass rained from the windows.

Alarms erupted throughout the estate.

The butler burst through the doors.

"Sir!"

Blackwood stood for the first time.

"What happened?"

The butler's face was white with terror.

"The east wing—"

He struggled to breathe.

"It's on fire!"

At that exact moment, Harrison's phone rang.

It was Detective Doyle.

Harrison answered immediately.

Doyle didn't waste a second.

"Harrison!"

"Someone just attacked the hospital!"

Harrison's blood ran cold.

"Khloe?"

"We stopped one shooter..."

May you like

His voice broke.

"...but Emma is gone."
