CHAPTER 7 — THE GUARDIANSHIP FRAUD

The call from the bank silenced the entire room.

Harrison slowly turned toward Evelyn.

"What did you say?"

She swallowed hard.

"The trust department received emergency guardianship papers less than an hour ago."

"They were signed electronically."

"They appoint Richard Harrington as Emma's sole legal guardian."

The muscles in Harrison's jaw tightened.

"My sister is alive."

"I know."

"The hospital has confirmed it."

"Exactly."

He held out his hand.

"The documents."

Evelyn handed him her tablet.

Harrison scanned the first page.

Then the second.

By the third...

His eyes became dangerously still.

Someone had forged a judge's electronic signature.

Someone had forged Khloe's medical status.

Someone had declared her mentally incapacitated.

And someone had attempted to transfer legal authority over her newborn daughter before Khloe had even held the child for five minutes.

This wasn't desperation.

It was preparation.

The Children's Trust Division

Twenty minutes later, Harrison and Detective Doyle walked into the headquarters of the Pennsylvania Children's Trust Division.

The director, Elaine Porter, was already waiting.

She looked exhausted.

"I've never seen anything like this."

She spread the documents across a conference table.

"The application arrived through what appeared to be an authorized legal portal."

"It included hospital records."

"A physician's declaration."

"And a judge's approval."

Doyle picked up the papers.

"They're all fake."

Elaine nodded.

"Our cybersecurity team confirmed someone cloned the court's authentication certificate."

She looked toward Harrison.

"If our compliance officer hadn't noticed that Judge Raymond has been on vacation in Italy for three days..."

She didn't finish the sentence.

They all understood.

Richard would already be Emma's legal guardian.

Harrison carefully turned another page.

Then stopped.

At the bottom was the name of the attorney who supposedly filed the petition.

He frowned.

"Who is Michael Donovan?"

Elaine blinked.

"There is no Michael Donovan."

"What?"

"No attorney by that name is licensed anywhere in Pennsylvania."

The room fell silent.

Whoever had built this scheme had invented an entire lawyer.

Harrington Estate

Richard paced across his study.

His phone buzzed.

Another encrypted message.

Guardianship attempt failed.

He closed his eyes.

Seconds later—

A second message arrived.

Cole reached the bank first.

Richard hurled the phone across the room.

It smashed against the fireplace.

Crystal whiskey glasses rattled.

For the first time in years...

His carefully polished image cracked.

Vanessa, standing in the doorway, stared at him.

"I've never seen you like this."

Richard didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Still silence.

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"Ethan Mercer is dead."

"The hospital attack failed."

"The company is collapsing."

"And now someone tried to steal custody of a baby."

She searched his face.

"Richard..."

Her voice trembled.

"...what have you done?"

He slowly looked at her.

"You know less than you think."

Vanessa felt a chill run through her body.

It wasn't an answer.

It was a warning.

Montgomery Medical Center

Khloe was awake when Harrison returned.

She looked exhausted, but there was new determination behind her eyes.

He sat beside her bed.

"I need to ask you something."

She nodded.

"Did Richard ever mention guardianship?"

She frowned.

"No."

"Insurance?"

"No."

"Changing your will?"

Khloe hesitated.

Then...

"About four months ago."

Harrison leaned forward.

"He asked me to update our estate plan."

"What did you say?"

"I told him we'd do it after the baby was born."

"And?"

"He became angry."

Khloe closed her eyes, replaying the memory.

"He said something strange."

"What?"

"He said..."

"Life doesn't always give us time to finish paperwork."

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Harrison looked away.

Every new piece of evidence fit perfectly into Ethan Mercer's testimony.

Project Phoenix.

Insurance.

The forged will.

The fake guardianship.

This had never been about divorce.

It had always been about inheritance.

Philadelphia Police Department

Detective Doyle's phone rang.

"Forensics."

"We found something on the fake guardianship papers."

"What?"

"A partial fingerprint."

"Whose?"

"It belongs to Melissa Grant."

Doyle wasn't surprised.

"The assistant."

"Yes."

"But..."

The forensic analyst paused.

"There was another print underneath hers."

Doyle frowned.

"It belongs to someone you've never heard of."

"Who?"

A keyboard clicked.

Then—

"Jonathan Pierce."

Doyle searched the database.

Nothing.

"No criminal record."

"No driver's license."

"No tax filings."

"No birth certificate."

The analyst looked up from her monitor.

"It's as if the man doesn't exist."

Cole & Associates

By midnight, Harrison's investigation team had expanded to nearly thirty people.

Maps covered the walls.

Strings connected shell companies across four countries.

Photographs of executives, accountants, and lawyers filled an enormous evidence board.

One investigator hurried inside.

"Harry."

"We identified Jonathan Pierce."

Harrison looked up.

"I thought he didn't exist."

"He doesn't."

"Officially."

The investigator handed him an intelligence file.

"The name is fake."

"The real man is..."

He stopped.

"...Nathan Voss."

Former military intelligence.

Private security consultant.

Current operations director for Sentinel Executive Protection.

The same company connected to the tattoo.

The same company linked to the hospital attacker.

The same company seen at the courthouse.

Harrison stared at the photograph.

A scar crossed the man's left eyebrow.

Cold gray eyes.

No smile.

No emotion.

A professional.

"What do we know?"

"Very little."

"He spent fifteen years operating overseas."

"No family."

"No permanent address."

"Clients include politicians..."

"...foreign businessmen..."

"...and Richard Harrington."

The NICU

Late that night...

Khloe insisted on seeing Emma again.

The nurses carefully wheeled her bed beside the incubator.

Emma slept peacefully.

Khloe smiled through tears.

"I wish your father could see you."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

She immediately looked away.

"No."

She whispered.

"I don't."

Harrison stood quietly behind her.

"You don't have to pretend anymore."

Khloe nodded.

"I know."

She reached through the incubator.

Emma's tiny fingers wrapped around hers again.

"I spent six years trying to save my marriage."

She looked at her daughter.

"Now..."

"My only job is saving you."

Two Hours Later

Detective Doyle received another urgent call.

The security camera from the courthouse had been enhanced.

The mysterious man with the compass tattoo wasn't alone.

Standing beside him—

Half hidden behind a column—

Was a woman.

Blonde.

Elegant.

Wearing oversized sunglasses.

The technician zoomed in.

Doyle's heartbeat slowed.

"I know her."

The image sharpened.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Melissa.

It was someone much more unexpected.

Judge Allison Mercer.

The very judge originally assigned to Khloe and Richard's divorce proceedings.

Doyle stared at the screen.

If the image was authentic...

Then the conspiracy reached far deeper than anyone had imagined.

Not only inside Harrington Commercial.

Not only inside Sentinel Security.

But possibly...

Inside the justice system itself.

He immediately called Harrison.

"Harrison..."

"You need to come."

"It's bigger than Richard."

"How much bigger?"

Doyle looked once more at the frozen image of the judge standing only yards away before Khloe was pushed.

May you like

Then answered quietly—

"I think someone inside the court has been protecting him."
