Chapter 6 - The Identity She Stole

The woman introduced herself as Clara Bennett.
Twenty years earlier, she had worked as an accountant for the Blackwood family.
She knew every transaction.
Every contract.
Every secret.
Including the one Vanessa buried.
“She wasn’t always Vanessa Blackwood.”
Daniel stared.
“What was her real name?”
Clara looked at him.
“Vanessa Hale.”
The name meant nothing.
Until Clara opened another document.
A birth record.
Daniel read it.
Then his expression changed.
“She changed her identity.”
Clara nodded.
“She erased her past.”
Emily looked confused.
“But why?”
Clara sat down.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t running from poverty.”
She looked at Daniel.
“She was running from what she did.”
The room became silent.
Clara explained everything.
Years ago, Vanessa worked as an assistant for Daniel’s father.
She discovered confidential information about the Blackwood inheritance.
She learned that a woman named Victoria Hale was the rightful heir to a hidden family trust.
Instead of revealing the truth…
Vanessa manipulated the records.
She changed names.
Changed documents.
And slowly removed anyone who could expose her.
Emily listened carefully.
“So the necklace…”
Clara nodded.
“Was never about theft.”
“It was about finding out who knew too much.”
Emily looked down.
“She thought I found the documents.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked angry.
“She framed an innocent person.”
Clara nodded.
“And she wasn’t finished.”
Before anyone could respond, Clara handed Daniel a final envelope.
“This is the reason she is desperate.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a legal document.
His father’s final amendment.
The true inheritance agreement.
The one Vanessa had hidden.
Daniel read the first line.
Then stopped.
“What?”
Emily asked.
Daniel looked up.
His voice was quiet.
“My father left everything to someone else.”
Clara nodded.
“Someone Vanessa thought was gone forever.”
“Who?”
Clara looked at Emily.
And said:
“The original heir.”
Emily felt a chill.
“Who is she?”
Clara opened the final page.
A photograph fell out.
Daniel picked it up.
His face changed instantly.
Because he recognized the woman.
A woman he thought had disappeared twenty years ago.
A woman connected to Vanessa’s darkest secret.
A woman whose return could destroy everything Vanessa built.
Then Daniel whispered her name.
“Evelyn Hale.”
At that moment, Emily’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
Stop looking into the past.
A second message followed.
Or Vanessa will not be the only person who loses everything.
Emily stared at the screen.
Because for the first time…
she realized something terrifying.

Vanessa wasn’t trying to escape the truth.
She was trying to protect herself from someone else revealing it first.
