Chapter 15 - The Mother’s Last Secret

Margaret stood in the doorway.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost peaceful.

Which made it worse.

Daniel looked at her like he was seeing a stranger.

“Mother.”

Margaret walked into the room.

“I know what you’re thinking.”

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t.”

She stopped.

Because he was right.

For years, she had controlled the image of a perfect mother.

A woman who protected her family.

But now everyone saw the truth.

“You knew about Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about me.”

Margaret looked down.

“Yes.”

The answers came too easily.

Emily felt anger rising.

“How could you?”

Margaret looked at her.

“You think I wanted this?”

Emily stepped forward.

“You allowed it.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

“I was trying to protect Daniel.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?”

“You protected yourself.”

The words hit harder than shouting.

Margaret looked at her son.

“I was afraid.”

Again.

That word.

Daniel shook his head.

“Everyone was afraid.”

“But I was the only one who had something to lose.”

Emily stared.

“And everyone else?”

Margaret had no answer.

Then she finally confessed.

Years ago, when Evelyn discovered the truth, Margaret made a choice.

She chose the family name over the truth.

She helped hide documents.

She helped change records.

She helped Vanessa disappear.

But there was one thing she never expected.

She never expected Emily.

A housekeeper.

Someone invisible.

Someone nobody considered important.

Someone who would accidentally uncover everything.

Margaret looked at her.

“You were never supposed to find that file.”

Emily replied:

“And you were never supposed to get away with what you did.”

Silence.

Then Daniel stepped forward.

“This ends tonight.”

Margaret looked at him.

“You would destroy your own family?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He looked around.

“I’m finally saving it.”

He turned toward Detective Miller, who had been recording everything.

Margaret’s face changed.

“You recorded this?”

Daniel nodded.

“Every confession.”

For the first time…

Margaret looked afraid.

But then she smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“You think this is enough?”

Emily felt a chill.

“What else?”

Margaret looked directly at Daniel.

“You still don’t know why your father chose you.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Margaret whispered:

“Because he knew you weren’t his son.”

The room went silent.

Again.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Another piece of a life falling apart.

Emily looked at Daniel.

And realized…

May you like

even after everything they discovered…

the biggest truth had not been revealed yet.
