Chapter 16 - The Truth About Daniel Blackwood

The words echoed through the room.

“You still don’t know why your father chose you.”

Daniel stared at Margaret.

His face had gone completely still.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Just empty.

Like his mind had stopped trying to understand.

“What did you say?”

Margaret looked at him.

For the first time that night…

she looked sorry.

“Your father knew.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Knew what?”

Margaret swallowed.

“That you weren’t his biological son.”

Silence.

The kind of silence that hurts more than screaming.

Emily watched Daniel carefully.

She had seen him face angry guests.

Threats.

Betrayals.

But this was different.

This was the destruction of who he believed he was.

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“My father raised me.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

“He loved me.”

“Yes.”

“Then what does biology matter?”

Nobody answered.

Because Daniel was right.

But the pain came from something deeper.

The truth had been hidden from him.

His entire life.

Evelyn stepped forward.

Her expression was full of sadness.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“You knew too?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“Yes.”

His face changed.

“You all knew.”

The sentence was quiet.

But it carried more pain than anger.

“Everyone knew who I was except me.”

Emily stepped closer.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

And for a moment, she saw the same person who had stood beside her when everyone accused her.

A person who understood what it felt like to have your identity stolen.

Margaret continued.

“Your father discovered the truth years ago.”

“What truth?”

“That you were Evelyn’s son.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She nodded.

“He found out after your birth records were altered.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“So my father wasn’t my father.”

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“He was the man who raised you.”

The words mattered.

Because love was not erased by a secret.

But the betrayal remained.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Because every time I tried…”

She looked at Margaret.

“Someone stopped me.”

Daniel turned.

His eyes hardened.

“Mother.”

Margaret finally broke.

“I was afraid.”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Of what?”

“Of losing you.”

The answer stunned everyone.

Margaret continued.

“I knew if the truth came out, everything would collapse.”

Emily looked at her.

“You mean your reputation.”

Margaret didn’t deny it.

Then Detective Miller entered.

He had been reviewing the documents from the estate.

“We found something.”

Everyone turned.

He held a small envelope.

“Hidden inside Daniel’s birth records.”

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Written by his father.

The first line made everyone freeze.

Daniel, if you are reading this, then the people who protected my lies have finally failed.

Daniel continued reading.

The letter revealed everything.

His father knew about Evelyn.

He knew about the inheritance.

He knew about Vanessa.

But he also knew something else.

He knew Daniel was the only person capable of ending the cycle.

The final paragraph said:

You were never chosen because of blood. You were chosen because you were the only person in this family who still had a conscience.

Daniel stopped reading.

Emily saw tears forming in his eyes.

Not weakness.

Release.

After decades of lies…

he finally understood.

His father had not chosen him because he was an heir.

He chose him because he was a person.

Then the detective interrupted.

“There’s one more thing.”

Everyone looked.

“The necklace.”

Emily frowned.

“What about it?”

The detective opened another file.

“The diamond necklace was never Vanessa’s.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Then whose was it?”

The detective answered:

“Evelyn’s.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn touched the necklace in the photograph.

“That necklace contained the original ownership records.”

Emily felt a chill.

“The necklace was the evidence.”

The detective nodded.

“And Vanessa knew.”

The entire plan had been built around one thing.

Not money.

May you like

Not revenge.

The truth.
