Chapter 4 - The File Vanessa Wanted Buried

The mansion had never felt so large.

Emily had walked through those halls for years.

She knew every staircase.

Every room.

Every hidden corner.

But that night…

the Blackwood Mansion felt different.

It no longer felt like a workplace.

It felt like a battlefield.

Daniel stood near the study window, staring into the darkness outside.

The unknown caller had shaken him.

Not because of the threat.

But because of the name the stranger mentioned.

The past.

Emily noticed.

“You know who that was.”

Daniel remained silent.

“Mr. Blackwood?”

He finally turned.

“Daniel.”

It was the first time he asked her to use his first name.

And somehow that made the situation feel even more serious.

“Yes.”

“I know who might be behind this.”

Emily waited.

“My father.”

She frowned.

“But your father is dead.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Exactly.”

The room became quiet.

“My father spent his entire life building the Blackwood empire.”

He looked at the documents.

“But before he died, he became obsessed with one thing.”

“What?”

“The truth.”

Emily looked confused.

“About what?”

Daniel walked toward the desk.

“My father discovered that someone inside the family was manipulating the inheritance.”

He opened another drawer.

Inside was an old envelope.

“I found this after his funeral.”

Emily looked at the faded paper.

“What is it?”

“A letter.”

Daniel unfolded it.

The handwriting was old.

The message was short.

Daniel, if you are reading this, I am already gone. Trust no one who claims they protected this family. The person closest to you may be the reason it falls apart.

Emily felt a chill.

“Vanessa?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

But there was something else.

Something worse.

At the bottom of the letter was another sentence.

The necklace is not the evidence. It is the distraction.

Emily stared.

“The necklace was a distraction?”

Daniel nodded.

“Vanessa wanted everyone focused on you.”

“While she searched for something else.”

“Yes.”

Emily looked at the document.

“What exactly?”

Daniel opened the file again.

Inside was a hidden page.

A page that had been folded and concealed.

It contained a financial record.

Millions of dollars transferred from a private account.

To a company registered under another name.

Emily recognized the name immediately.

“Blackwood Holdings?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed.

“Look closer.”

The company name was different.

Vantage Legacy Group.

Emily looked at him.

“What is that?”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“I have no idea.”

Before they could investigate further…

the door opened.

Margaret Blackwood entered.

Daniel’s mother.

Her face was pale.

“I know what that company is.”

Everyone turned.

Margaret walked slowly into the room.

“I hoped this day would never come.”

Daniel stared.

“Mother.”

She looked at the file.

Then at Emily.

“She found it.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“You knew?”

Margaret looked away.

“Yes.”

Emily felt betrayed.

“You knew Vanessa was hiding something?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Not just Vanessa.”

The room became silent.

“Your father knew too.”

Daniel froze.

“My father?”

Margaret nodded.

“There was a secret agreement.”

“Between who?”

Margaret looked at the document.

“Between this family…”

“And the woman Vanessa was before she became Vanessa Blackwood.”

Emily’s heart tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret whispered:

“Vanessa wasn’t born into wealth.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“She married into it.”

May you like

A pause.

“And she destroyed someone’s life to get here.”
