Chapter 12 - The Son Who Wasn’t the Heir

Daniel refused to believe him.
“No.”
The word came out quietly.
Almost like a denial to himself.
“My father was my father.”
Richard nodded.
“Emotionally.”
He placed the photograph on the table.
“But legally?”
A pause.
“No.”
Emily watched Daniel break.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
The foundation of who he believed himself to be.
“Who am I?”
Richard looked away.
“That is the question Vanessa has been trying to answer for twenty years.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You knew?”
Richard nodded.
“I knew everything.”
“Then why say nothing?”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Because your father threatened me.”
“With what?”
“The same thing he used against everyone.”
Secrets.
The Blackwood family was not held together by love.
It was held together by fear.
Daniel grabbed the photograph.
“Who is the child?”
Richard hesitated.
Then said:
“Evelyn Hale’s son.”
Emily froze.
A terrible realization formed.
Daniel wasn’t the heir.
He was connected to the heir.
The entire inheritance had been built around a lie.
Daniel sat down.
Silent.
Emily moved closer.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“I spent my entire life believing I belonged here.”
His voice cracked.
“And now I don’t even know who I am.”
Emily understood that pain.
Because she had spent one night being labeled something she wasn’t.
A thief.
A criminal.
A liar.
Only Daniel’s entire identity had been stolen.
Then Richard revealed the final secret.
“The necklace.”
Emily looked at him.
“What about it?”
Richard smiled.
“That necklace belonged to Evelyn.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
“Your father gave it to her before everything fell apart.”
Emily felt a chill.
“So Vanessa planted it because…”
Richard nodded.
“Because she knew the necklace would lead you back to the truth.”
Daniel stared.
“She wanted me to find this?”
“No.”
Richard corrected.
“She wanted to destroy the person who found it first.”
Emily realized.
That person was her.
The necklace was never just evidence.
It was a message.
A warning.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
A voice everyone recognized.
Vanessa.
“You finally know the truth.”
Daniel froze.
“Where are you?”
Vanessa ignored the question.
“I didn’t plant that necklace because I wanted Emily gone.”
Emily’s heart tightened.
“Then why?”
Vanessa’s voice became quiet.
“Because I knew someone was coming for all of us.”
A pause.
“And Emily was the only person who could expose them.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who?”
The call went silent for a moment.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“The person who has been controlling this family from the beginning.”
The line disconnected.
Seconds later, a message appeared.
A photograph.
Of Richard.
Meeting someone in secret.
Someone they never expected.
May you like
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
Evelyn Hale.
