CHAPTER 9 The Son Who Never Died

The Memory Room remained silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that came after a storm.
The kind that arrived when everyone realized the enemy had been standing closer than they ever imagined.
William Blackwood sat motionless before the chessboard.
His eyes remained fixed on the black queen.
The same piece Nathan had moved countless times as a child.
The same piece that always defeated him.
"No..." William whispered.
His voice cracked.
"That's impossible."
Sophia stepped closer.
"William..."
But he didn't respond.
His fingers slowly touched the chessboard.
Forty years of memories flooded back.
A little boy sitting across from him.
Small hands moving chess pieces.
A quiet voice saying:
"Father, you always protect the king."
"That's why you always lose."
William closed his eyes.
Because Nathan had been right.
He had always protected the wrong thing.
Rebecca looked at Thomas.
"You knew about him?"
Thomas immediately shook his head.
"No."
"You're sure?"
Thomas looked offended.
"Rebecca, if I knew Nathan was alive, do you really think I would have spent twenty years searching for Ethan?"
Rebecca stared at him.
The doubt remained.
The fear remained.
Because after everything they had uncovered...
Trust had become dangerous.
Daniel walked toward the radio.
"Can we trace the signal?"
He examined the old equipment.
"The transmission came from inside this facility."
Everyone froze.
Sophia looked around.
"Inside?"
Daniel nodded.
"Someone activated the radio remotely."
William slowly stood.
His expression had changed.
The grief was gone.
Only determination remained.
"Nathan wants us to know he is alive."
Sophia frowned.
"Why reveal himself now?"
William looked at the chessboard.
"Because he believes he has already won."
A sudden sound interrupted them.
Click.
The lights flickered.
Every screen inside the Memory Room turned on.
One by one.
Old monitors.
Security cameras.
Ancient computers.
All displaying the same symbol.
A silver raven.
Then a video appeared.
A man sat in darkness.
Only half of his face was visible.
Black suit.
No mask.
Cold eyes.
Older than the boy William remembered.
But unmistakable.
Nathan Blackwood.
William stepped forward.
"Nathan."
The man smiled.
"Hello, Father."
Sophia felt a chill.
There was no anger in Nathan's voice.
That was what made it worse.
He sounded calm.
Almost affectionate.
"After all these years..."
Nathan continued.
"You finally found my home."
William's hands tightened.
"Where is Ethan?"
Nathan smiled slightly.
"Still asking about him?"
A pause.
"You never change."
"Even now, after learning the truth, your first question is about another child."
William's face hardened.
"Tell me where my grandson is."
Nathan leaned closer to the camera.
"Grandson?"
He laughed quietly.
"That's the problem with you, Father."
"You always believe blood creates loyalty."
Sophia stepped toward the screen.
"Nathan."
The man looked at her.
For the first time...
His expression changed.
"Sophia."
Her heart stopped.
"You know me?"
"I know everyone."
Nathan looked at Lily.
"And I know her too."
Lily moved closer to Sophia.
Fear filled her eyes.
Nathan continued.
"The girl you protected."
"The girl Eleanor died trying to save."
Sophia's breathing became unsteady.
"What did you do to my mother?"
Nathan became silent.
For a moment...
The cold mask disappeared.
Something almost human appeared.
Regret.
Then it vanished.
"Eleanor made a choice."
Sophia's voice shook.
"You killed her."
"No."
Nathan answered softly.
"She chose to die."
The room erupted.
Rebecca slammed her hand against the desk.
"You're lying."
Nathan ignored her.
He looked only at William.
"You want the truth?"
William stared at the screen.
"Yes."
Nathan nodded.
"Then you deserve to see everything."
The monitors changed.
A new video appeared.
A hospital room.
A young Nathan.
Only seven years old.
Weak.
Pale.
Connected to machines.
William froze.
"I remember this."
Nathan's voice echoed.
"You remember your son being sick."
"You remember doctors saying I wouldn't survive."
The video showed a younger William holding Nathan's hand.
Crying.
Begging him to fight.
Nathan continued.
"But you don't remember what happened afterward."
The screen changed.
A laboratory.
Scientists.
Documents.
A child experiment file.
PROJECT ATLAS — SUBJECT N-001
Sophia covered her mouth.
"No..."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Project Atlas..."
William looked horrified.
"Nathan was the first subject."
Nathan's voice became colder.
"I wasn't saved."
"I was rebuilt."
"The world saw a dying child."
"But the Raven Circle saw potential."
William shook his head.
"No."
Nathan smiled sadly.
"You gave them access."
The room went completely still.
Rebecca turned toward William.
"What?"
Nathan continued.
"Father trusted powerful people."
"Business partners."
"Government officials."
"He thought they were helping his son."
A pause.
"But they were creating a weapon."
William's face drained of color.
"I didn't know."
Nathan's expression hardened.
"That's what you always say."
The screen showed another image.
A young Nathan standing beside a man wearing a raven mask.
Sophia stepped back.
"Who is that?"
Nathan answered:
"The man who saved me."
William stared.
"Alexander..."
Nathan smiled.
"Yes."
Everyone froze.
"But Alexander wasn't my brother."
"He was my handler."
Thomas whispered:
"Then who was Alexander Blackwood?"
Nathan looked directly into the camera.
"The man who erased my identity."
"The man who turned me into a ghost."
"The man who created the Raven Circle."
William shook his head.
"No..."
Nathan leaned back.
"And when Alexander died..."
"I inherited everything."
The video suddenly glitched.
The silver raven appeared again.
Then a message appeared on every screen.
PHASE TWO ACTIVATED.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"What does that mean?"
William looked terrified.
Because he knew.
"No..."
Sophia turned toward him.
"What?"
William slowly answered.
"Project Atlas wasn't created to find people."
"It was created to control them."
A loud explosion shook the underground chamber.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Rebecca grabbed her weapon.
"They found us."
Daniel checked the monitors.
His face changed.
"Not them."
Sophia looked at him.
"Who?"
Daniel pointed at the security cameras.
A single figure walked through the tunnel.
No armor.
No weapon.
No guards.
Just a man wearing a black coat.
Walking calmly toward them.
William stared at the screen.
His blood ran cold.
Because he recognized him.
The man stopped outside the Memory Room.
Looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
Nathan's voice came through the speakers.
"Father..."
"You finally met the man who raised me."
The door lock clicked.
Slowly...
The steel door began opening.
May you like
And standing on the other side was—
Alexander Blackwood.
