CHAPTER 20 The Truth Inside Ethan

The message remained on the screen.

"WAKE UP."

Two simple words.

But they terrified everyone.

Because the voice belonged to Ethan.

Not a recording.

Not a stranger.

Not an enemy.

His own voice.

The underground facility was completely silent.

Ethan stared at the screen.

Unable to move.

Unable to speak.

Because somewhere deep inside his mind...

Something answered.

Sophia noticed his expression.

"Ethan."

He didn't respond.

"Ethan, look at me."

Slowly...

His eyes moved toward her.

But there was something different.

Something she had never seen before.

Fear.

"I heard it."

Sophia stepped closer.

"What?"

Ethan whispered:

"My own voice."

Daniel examined the system.

"This isn't a normal recording."

Rebecca looked at him.

"Explain."

Daniel pointed at the screen.

"The system isn't playing a file."

A pause.

"It's accessing Ethan's neural memory."

Everyone froze.

Emma stepped forward.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"No, that's impossible."

Ethan looked at her.

"You knew."

Emma looked away.

That was enough.

Sophia stared at Emma.

"What did you know?"

Emma remained silent.

Sophia's voice became sharper.

"Emma."

Emma closed her eyes.

"That Ethan wasn't only a subject."

A pause.

"He was the archive."

The words crushed the room.

William looked confused.

"Archive?"

Emma nodded.

"Project Atlas needed somewhere to store human memories."

"But machines could be destroyed."

"Files could be stolen."

"Systems could fail."

She looked at Ethan.

"So Eleanor created something else."

Ethan whispered:

"A person."

Emma nodded.

"Yes."

Silence.

Sophia looked at Ethan.

"You mean..."

She couldn't finish.

Emma did.

"Ethan carries the memories of everyone connected to Project Atlas."

Everyone stared at him.

Daniel looked horrified.

"How many?"

Emma answered:

"Thousands."

Ethan stepped backward.

"No."

His breathing became faster.

"No, that's not possible."

Sophia grabbed his hand.

"Ethan."

He looked at her.

"I spent my whole life trying to forget."

His voice cracked.

"But my mind..."

A pause.

"...was never mine."

Sophia shook her head.

"That's not true."

Ethan looked at her.

"How?"

She held his hand tighter.

"Because memories don't control you."

"You decide what they mean."

But Ethan wasn't listening.

Because suddenly...

The room changed.

A sound.

A smell.

A voice.

Memories flooded back.

Not his own.

Thousands of them.

A child crying.

A mother searching.

A scientist regretting.

A prisoner hoping.

Ethan collapsed to his knees.

Sophia immediately caught him.

"Ethan!"

His eyes closed.

And he saw everything.

A little girl named Sarah.

A boy named Michael.

A father who never found his daughter.

A woman who forgot her own name.

Thousands of lives.

Thousands of stories.

Then...

One memory appeared.

Different from the others.

New.

Hidden.

Eleanor.

She stood in the original Atlas chamber.

Holding baby Ethan.

Beside her...

William.

But they weren't alone.

A third person stood there.

Victoria.

Ethan watched.

Unable to move.

Victoria said:

"The child is perfect."

Eleanor looked angry.

"He is not a project."

Victoria smiled.

"Everything is a project."

William held the baby.

His expression was filled with love.

Victoria continued:

"You don't understand what you created."

Eleanor answered:

"No."

"I understand exactly."

She looked at Ethan.

"He will be the proof that humanity cannot be manufactured."

The memory changed.

Years later.

Ethan as a child.

Running through the facility.

Emma beside him.

Nathan watching them.

Then...

A final memory.

One Ethan had never seen.

Eleanor recording a message.

She looked exhausted.

But peaceful.

"If Ethan remembers this..."

"Then it means the system failed."

She looked directly into the camera.

"Ethan."

"If you are seeing this..."

"I need you to understand something."

A pause.

"You were never created to carry the world's memories."

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

"You were created because I wanted the world to remember one thing."

The recording moved closer.

"That every life matters."

The screen went dark.

Ethan opened his eyes.

Sophia was beside him.

Lily was holding his arm.

Emma was crying quietly.

William looked at him.

"What did you see?"

Ethan slowly stood.

"I saw the truth."

A pause.

"And Eleanor was right."

Rebecca looked around.

"So what now?"

Ethan looked at the dead Atlas machines.

Then at the family standing beside him.

"For the first time..."

"I choose."

Suddenly...

The remaining monitor activated.

Everyone turned.

A final file appeared.

PROJECT ECHO — FINAL COMMAND

Daniel frowned.

"Why is it still active?"

Ethan walked toward the screen.

Because he already knew.

The file opened.

A message appeared:

MEMORY RESTORATION REQUIRES A CHOICE

Below it:

OPTION ONE:
RETURN ALL LOST MEMORIES TO HUMANITY

OPTION TWO:
DELETE ALL PROJECT ECHO DATA FOREVER

Everyone stared.

William looked at Ethan.

"It's your decision."

Sophia stepped closer.

"No matter what you choose..."

"You won't choose alone."

Ethan looked at the two options.

For years...

People had made choices for him.

Scientists.

Leaders.

Family.

Enemies.

But not anymore.

He placed his hand on the screen.

The system asked:

"CONFIRM FINAL DECISION?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

Then smiled slightly.

"I remember."

A pause.

"But I choose the future."

His finger moved.

DELETE PROJECT ECHO

The system began shutting down.

10%

30%

50%

Then suddenly...

A warning appeared.

ERROR

REMOTE USER CONNECTED

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared.

"Someone is stopping the deletion."

The screen changed.

A new user appeared.

USER: ELEANOR BLACKWOOD

Sophia gasped.

"My mother?"

The system activated one final message.

A woman's voice filled the chamber.

Calm.

Gentle.

Familiar.

"Ethan."

Everyone froze.

"I knew you would choose this."

Tears filled Sophia's eyes.

Eleanor continued:

"Because that is why I chose you."

The screen showed one final image.

Eleanor smiling.

"But before you destroy Echo..."

A pause.

"You need to know the final truth."

The room went silent.

"The Raven Circle was never created to control humanity."

A heartbeat.

"It was created to protect humanity..."

Another pause.

"From something much worse."

The screen flashed.

A new file appeared.

PROJECT ATLAS: ENEMY IDENTIFIED

Everyone stared.

The name appeared.

SUBJECT: UNKNOWN

Then...

One final line:

"THE FIRST HUMAN MEMORY WAS NOT CREATED."

"IT WAS DISCOVERED."

The lights went out.

And somewhere beyond the Blackwood underground facility...

May you like

A machine that had been silent for forty years...

Opened its eyes.
