CHAPTER 10 The Man Who Should Have Been Dead

The steel door opened slowly.

A low mechanical sound echoed through the Memory Room.

KRRRRR...

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Everyone stared at the figure standing beyond the doorway.

The man was older.

Much older than the photographs William remembered.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

A long black coat covering his shoulders.

But there was no mistake.

William knew that face.

A face he had mourned for seven years.

A face he had buried.

A face that should have been impossible.

William whispered:

"Alexander..."

The man smiled.

Not warmly.

Not cruelly.

Almost sadly.

"Hello, William."

Rebecca raised her gun immediately.

"Don't move."

Alexander looked at the weapon.

Then at Rebecca.

A faint smile appeared.

"You still point first and ask questions later."

Rebecca's expression hardened.

"You know me?"

"I know everyone who tried to destroy the Raven Circle."

Sophia stepped forward.

Her eyes were filled with anger.

"You were dead."

Alexander looked at her.

"That was the idea."

Thomas clenched his fists.

"You let everyone believe you died."

Alexander nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

A long silence followed.

Then Alexander answered:

"Because sometimes a dead man has more power than a living one."

William stepped closer.

His voice trembled.

"You raised Nathan."

Alexander looked at him.

"I saved him."

William's expression changed.

"You destroyed him."

"No."

Alexander's eyes became colder.

"You destroyed him first."

The words struck harder than any weapon.

William shook his head.

"I loved my son."

Alexander walked slowly into the room.

"You loved the idea of your son."

"You loved the Blackwood legacy."

"You loved your empire."

"But Nathan..."

Alexander stopped.

"You never truly saw Nathan."

Nathan's voice suddenly came through the speakers.

"Careful, Alexander."

"You always enjoyed telling my story."

The room froze.

Alexander looked at the camera.

For the first time...

His calm expression disappeared.

"Nathan."

A quiet laugh echoed.

"Still afraid of me?"

Alexander stared at the screen.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm disappointed."

Daniel looked between the screen and Alexander.

"There are two of you."

"Working together?"

Alexander didn't answer.

Nathan did.

"We were."

Sophia frowned.

"Were?"

The speakers became silent.

Then Nathan continued.

"Alexander believed he could control me forever."

"But he forgot one thing."

"What?"

Nathan's voice became darker.

"I learned from him."

The lights suddenly shut off.

Complete darkness.

Lily gasped.

Sophia immediately grabbed her hand.

"I'm here."

A second later...

Emergency lights turned on.

But something had changed.

The main computer system was active.

Files were disappearing.

Daniel rushed to the terminal.

"No."

Rebecca looked at him.

"What?"

"Someone is deleting the Memory Room."

William's face turned pale.

"Impossible."

Daniel typed rapidly.

"They're wiping everything."

"Photos."

"Documents."

"Project Atlas files."

Sophia looked at Alexander.

"You're doing this."

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the ceiling.

"Nathan is."

William stared at the monitors.

"Nathan..."

The screen displayed one final file.

PROJECT ATLAS — FINAL SUBJECT

Everyone gathered around.

Daniel opened it.

The file contained hundreds of pages.

Names.

Dates.

Experiments.

But one page stopped everyone.

A photograph.

A young boy.

Standing beside a hospital bed.

William recognized him instantly.

"Ethan..."

Sophia covered her mouth.

"No..."

Below the photograph were words:

SUBJECT E-007
STATUS: ACTIVE

Daniel looked confused.

"Ethan was part of Project Atlas?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

William looked at the file.

His face filled with horror.

"He wasn't a subject."

Sophia turned.

"Then what was he?"

William couldn't answer.

Because he already knew.

Alexander stepped closer.

"Ethan was the reason Nathan waited."

Rebecca pointed her gun.

"Explain."

Alexander looked at William.

"Your grandson wasn't kidnapped."

The room went silent.

"He was chosen."

Sophia's voice broke.

"No..."

Alexander continued.

"Ethan discovered the truth."

"He found out what Project Atlas really was."

"And he chose to disappear."

Lily shook her head.

"That's not true."

Everyone looked at her.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Ethan wouldn't leave us."

Sophia immediately hugged her.

Alexander watched Lily carefully.

Then said something unexpected.

"You sound exactly like Eleanor."

Sophia froze.

"What did you say?"

Alexander looked away.

"Your mother believed people could still be saved."

A bitter smile appeared.

"She was wrong."

Suddenly...

A sound came from the far end of the chamber.

A small electronic beep.

Everyone turned.

A hidden door behind the bookshelves opened.

Slowly.

Inside was a tiny room.

A child's bedroom.

A bed.

A desk.

Drawings.

Books.

And on the wall...

Hundreds of photographs.

Sophia walked forward.

Her hands shaking.

Because she recognized them.

Photos of Lily.

Photos of Ethan.

Photos of herself.

Photos of Eleanor.

Taken secretly.

Over many years.

Rebecca whispered:

"Someone was watching them."

William looked at Alexander.

"How long?"

Alexander didn't answer.

Nathan's voice returned.

"Since the beginning."

Sophia looked at the speaker.

"Nathan..."

The voice was quiet.

Almost emotional.

"You think I was hunting Ethan."

"You think I was trying to destroy this family."

A pause.

"But I was protecting him."

William stared.

"Protecting him?"

Nathan answered:

"From the Raven Circle."

"From Project Atlas."

"From you."

William stepped back.

The words hurt.

"What does that mean?"

Nathan's voice lowered.

"It means..."

"The person who betrayed Ethan..."

"Was never outside the family."

The entire room froze.

Thomas slowly turned.

Rebecca noticed.

"What are you looking at?"

Everyone followed his gaze.

It landed on one person.

William.

But William looked just as shocked.

"No..."

Nathan continued:

"The truth has been beside you all along."

"The person who gave Ethan to Project Atlas..."

"Was someone you trusted."

The monitors flickered.

A final image appeared.

A security recording.

A younger William.

Standing in a hidden laboratory.

Handing a child over to scientists.

The child turned.

The camera captured his face.

Ethan.

Sophia screamed:

"No!"

William collapsed backward.

"I don't remember..."

"I swear..."

"I don't remember this."

Nathan's voice became almost a whisper.

"That's because they erased your memory too."

Silence.

Then:

"You weren't the mastermind, Father."

"You were the first victim."

The video ended.

The door behind them locked.

A red warning appeared across every screen.

PROJECT ATLAS: MEMORY RESTORATION INITIATED

Daniel stared.

"What is happening?"

Alexander looked terrified for the first time.

"They're waking up."

Sophia turned.

"Who?"

Alexander looked at William.

And whispered:

"Everyone who was part of Project Atlas."

The lights went out again.

And somewhere deep beneath the bunker...

Hundreds of machines began turning on.
