CHAPTER 16 The Last Hour of Memory

The countdown continued.
00:59:58
00:59:57
00:59:56
Every second echoed through the underground facility.
The world above had no idea.
Cities were still sleeping.
People were still living their ordinary lives.
Laughing.
Fighting.
Loving.
Remembering.
But in less than an hour...
Everything could disappear.
Daniel stared at the main console.
"This isn't just a memory wipe."
Sophia looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel's fingers moved across the keyboard.
"Victoria changed the original Atlas system."
"The old Project Atlas stored memories."
A pause.
"This version can rewrite them."
Rebecca frowned.
"Rewrite?"
Daniel nodded.
"It doesn't erase who people are."
"It replaces who they are."
Silence.
Because everyone understood.
This was worse than death.
Death ended a life.
But this...
This stole the person inside.
Victoria watched them calmly.
"You finally understand."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You want to control everyone."
Victoria smiled.
"No."
"I want to save everyone."
Sophia looked disgusted.
"By taking away their lives?"
Victoria shook her head.
"By taking away their suffering."
She walked slowly through the laboratory.
"Do you know what creates war?"
"Memory."
"What creates revenge?"
"Memory."
"What creates hatred?"
"Memory."
Emma stepped forward.
"And what creates love?"
Victoria stopped.
For a moment...
Her expression changed.
Then she answered:
"Love is the one weakness humanity refuses to eliminate."
Ethan stared at her.
"You sound exactly like Charles."
Victoria smiled.
"Charles was my student."
Everyone froze.
Alexander looked shocked.
"Student?"
Victoria nodded.
"He learned from me."
"William learned from Eleanor."
"And Nathan learned from all of us."
William looked at her with hatred.
"You destroyed my family."
Victoria looked at him.
"No, William."
"You did."
The words cut deeper than any weapon.
William stepped forward.
"I created Atlas to save my son."
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
"But then you made the mistake every genius makes."
"What mistake?"
"You believed love made you different."
William's face hardened.
Victoria continued:
"But love is exactly what made you predictable."
Suddenly...
A warning appeared.
ATLAS CORE ACCESS REQUIRED
AUTHORIZATION: VICTORIA
Daniel looked at the screen.
"She's connected to the main system."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"She isn't controlling it."
A pause.
"The system recognizes her."
Ethan looked at Victoria.
"Because you built it."
Victoria smiled.
"Finally."
"You understand."
The laboratory doors suddenly locked.
Metal barriers dropped from the ceiling.
Everyone was trapped.
Rebecca fired at the control panel.
Nothing happened.
"She's sealed the room."
Victoria walked toward Ethan.
"Do you know why you survived?"
Ethan didn't answer.
"Because you were never an experiment."
"You were the final test."
Sophia moved closer.
"Stay away from him."
Victoria ignored her.
"You had something the others didn't."
"What?"
Victoria smiled.
"Attachment."
Ethan's expression changed.
Victoria continued:
"Every subject in Atlas was trained to suppress emotion."
"But you refused."
"You remembered people."
"You cared."
"You loved."
She looked at Sophia.
"And that made you stronger."
Ethan clenched his fists.
"You tortured children to prove a theory."
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
"I studied humanity."
A pause.
"And humanity failed."
Suddenly...
The main monitor activated.
A familiar face appeared.
Nathan.
But this time...
He wasn't smiling.
Victoria looked at the screen.
"Nathan."
Nathan stared back.
"You should have stayed hidden."
Victoria smiled.
"You always were my favorite mistake."
Sophia looked between them.
"You know each other."
Nathan answered:
"Yes."
William stared.
"Nathan..."
Nathan's eyes remained cold.
"Victoria created me."
A pause.
"But Eleanor saved me."
The room became silent.
Nathan continued:
"Victoria wanted a perfect human."
"Eleanor wanted a human being."
Victoria laughed softly.
"And Eleanor died because she couldn't accept reality."
Nathan's expression changed.
For the first time...
Anger appeared.
"Don't speak her name."
Victoria smiled.
"Still emotional."
"You never learned."
Nathan looked at Ethan.
"You need to listen carefully."
Everyone turned.
Nathan continued:
"The Atlas Core has a manual shutdown."
Daniel looked at the computer.
"Where?"
Nathan answered:
"Inside the original chamber."
Emma's face changed.
"No."
Ethan looked at her.
"What?"
Emma looked terrified.
"The original chamber is where everything began."
William understood.
"The first experiment."
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
Victoria smiled.
"Exactly."
She looked at Ethan.
"That is where you were created."
Ethan froze.
Sophia looked at him.
"What does she mean?"
Victoria answered:
"Ethan wasn't born naturally."
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Sophia looked at Ethan.
"Ethan..."
He shook his head.
"No."
Victoria continued:
"You were the final combination."
"Every successful Atlas adaptation."
"Every memory improvement."
"Every emotional response."
She smiled.
"You were designed."
Lily stepped forward.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl stood beside Ethan.
Her voice shook.
"But he is still Ethan."
For a moment...
Nobody spoke.
Even Victoria looked surprised.
Lily continued:
"He protected me."
"He loved Sophia."
"He saved people."
"Machines don't do that."
Ethan looked at her.
And something inside him broke.
Because after years of being called a subject...
A weapon...
A creation...
Someone finally called him human.
Nathan spoke quietly:
"That's why she fears him."
Victoria looked angry for the first time.
"Enough."
The countdown reached:
00:30:00
Daniel looked at the timer.
"Thirty minutes."
Rebecca checked her weapon.
"So we go to the original chamber."
Emma nodded.
"But Victoria knows we will."
Victoria smiled.
"Of course."
"Because I designed every possible escape."
The lights changed.
A hidden passage opened behind the laboratory.
At the end of the tunnel...
A red light flashed.
ORIGINAL ATLAS CHAMBER
William looked at Ethan.
"We end this together."
Ethan stared at him.
For a moment...
The pain between them remained.
Then Ethan nodded.
"Together."
The group entered the tunnel.
Sophia beside Ethan.
Lily holding his hand.
Emma walking ahead.
William behind them.
And Alexander following silently.
But none of them noticed...
Victoria had stayed behind.
She looked at the countdown.
00:28:42
Then she opened a hidden communication channel.
A voice answered.
A voice nobody expected.
"Is everything ready?"
Victoria smiled.
"Yes."
"The family is heading to the core."
The voice asked:
"And Ethan?"
Victoria looked at the tunnel.
"He finally believes he is human."
A pause.
"Which makes the final phase much easier."
The voice replied:
"Excellent."
Victoria smiled.
"Begin Project Atlas: Genesis."
Deep beneath the facility...
Another machine activated.
Not for memories.
May you like
Not for control.
For creation.
