CHAPTER 11 The Memories They Buried

The underground chamber trembled.

Not from an explosion.

Not from an attack.

Something much worse.

Something waking up.

Deep beneath the Memory Room, machines that had been silent for decades began to activate.

One by one.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Old monitors flickered.

Red lights spread across the walls.

A voice echoed through the bunker.

Calm.

Mechanical.

Emotionless.

"PROJECT ATLAS MEMORY RESTORATION: INITIATED."

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared at the screens.

"Memory restoration?"

He moved closer.

"What does that even mean?"

Alexander looked at the system with fear in his eyes.

"It means the program has started."

Rebecca tightened her grip on her weapon.

"Started what?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Because he knew the truth was worse than anyone imagined.

"It means everyone connected to Project Atlas..."

A pause.

"...is about to remember."

William remained on the floor.

The security footage still played in his mind.

His own face.

His own hands.

Handing Ethan to strangers.

But he couldn't remember it.

He looked at Alexander.

"Tell me."

Alexander stayed silent.

"Tell me what they did to me."

Alexander looked away.

"They didn't just erase Ethan's memories."

William's eyes widened.

"They erased yours."

Sophia stepped forward.

"Why?"

Alexander looked at her.

"Because William was never supposed to remember."

"Remember what?"

Alexander looked toward the old computers.

"The night Project Atlas began."

The monitors suddenly changed.

A date appeared.

Thirty years earlier.

A recording started.

A younger William stood inside a laboratory.

Beside him were several powerful men.

Executives.

Scientists.

Government officials.

And one person wearing the silver raven symbol.

Sophia whispered:

"The Raven Circle..."

Alexander nodded.

"They weren't created recently."

"They existed before Nathan."

The younger William on the screen looked exhausted.

Desperate.

A doctor approached him.

"Mr. Blackwood, the procedure is dangerous."

Young William answered:

"I don't care."

"My son is dying."

Sophia looked at Nathan's image.

Her expression softened.

Alexander spoke quietly.

"That was the truth."

"William wasn't trying to create a weapon."

"He was trying to save a child."

Rebecca looked confused.

"Then why did everything become this?"

Alexander watched the recording.

"Because every monster believes they started with a good reason."

The video continued.

A young Nathan was lying on a medical table.

Machines surrounded him.

Scientists prepared the procedure.

A doctor handed William a document.

"Once you sign this, Project Atlas has full authority over the subject."

William hesitated.

Then signed.

Sophia stared at William.

"You gave them permission."

William covered his face.

"I thought..."

His voice broke.

"I thought I was saving him."

Nathan's voice came through the speakers.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

Suddenly...

Another video appeared.

A younger Nathan.

Walking through the same laboratory.

But he wasn't alone.

A little boy followed him.

Ethan.

Everyone froze.

Lily stepped forward.

"Ethan..."

The recording showed the two boys sitting together.

Nathan was older.

Protective.

Teaching Ethan chess.

Just like the unfinished game in the Memory Room.

Sophia whispered:

"They knew each other."

Alexander nodded.

"Ethan was the only person Nathan trusted."

William looked at the screen.

"Why?"

Alexander answered:

"Because Ethan reminded him of who he could have been."

The recording changed.

A teenage Ethan stood in the laboratory.

He discovered files.

Thousands of files.

Names of children.

Experiments.

Memory modifications.

Human testing.

His face filled with horror.

Nathan appeared behind him.

"Ethan."

The boy turned.

"You knew?"

Nathan was silent.

Then:

"Yes."

Ethan looked betrayed.

"Then why didn't you stop them?"

Nathan answered:

"Because I was one of them."

Lily covered her mouth.

"No..."

Sophia held her hand.

The recording continued.

Ethan looked at Nathan.

"Help me destroy it."

Nathan stared at the files.

"Do you understand what happens if we do?"

Ethan nodded.

"They'll come after us."

Nathan replied:

"They already are."

The video ended.

Darkness returned.

Nobody spoke.

Then Thomas finally whispered:

"Ethan wasn't running away."

Sophia looked at him.

"He was fighting."

A loud alarm suddenly sounded.

Daniel checked the computer.

"Someone is accessing the system."

Rebecca raised her weapon.

"Who?"

Daniel looked confused.

"The access code..."

He stared at the screen.

"It's coming from outside."

Alexander's face changed.

"Impossible."

"What?"

Alexander whispered:

"Only one person has that authorization."

The bunker door suddenly unlocked.

Everyone aimed their weapons.

The heavy steel door opened.

Slowly.

A figure stood in the shadows.

No armor.

No mask.

No weapon.

Just a young man.

Blood on his shirt.

Exhaustion in his eyes.

Sophia stopped breathing.

Because she knew that face.

Even after years.

Even after all the pain.

She knew.

"Lily..."

The girl turned.

Her eyes widened.

"No..."

The man took one step forward.

"Sophia."

Her hands covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

Because the voice...

The voice she had been waiting for...

Was real.

"Ethan..."

Sophia whispered.

The room became completely silent.

Lily ran forward.

"Ethan!"

He caught her.

Holding her tightly.

For the first time in years...

The missing boy had returned.

But then Ethan looked past them.

Toward William.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something deeper.

Pain.

"You finally found the truth."

William could barely speak.

"Ethan..."

The young man looked at him.

"Do you know what they made me remember?"

Silence.

Ethan continued:

"Every single day."

"Every experiment."

"Every person who disappeared."

A pause.

"And the worst part..."

He looked at William.

"...I remembered you signing the order."

William's face collapsed.

"Ethan, I swear—"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

His voice trembled.

"Don't say you didn't know."

"Because I spent twenty years believing my grandfather chose a company over me."

Sophia stepped between them.

"Ethan..."

But Ethan looked away.

Then the alarms changed.

A new message appeared.

Everyone turned.

RAVEN CIRCLE ARRIVING

TARGET: ETHAN BLACKWOOD

SECONDARY TARGET: SOPHIA BLACKWOOD

Alexander's expression darkened.

"They found us."

Rebecca checked her weapon.

"How long?"

Daniel looked at the countdown.

"Three minutes."

Ethan looked at the group.

His eyes hardened.

"Then we don't have time."

Sophia stared.

"What are you going to do?"

Ethan looked toward the hidden files.

"The same thing I should have done years ago."

He walked toward the main computer.

"I'm going to finish what my mother started."

Nathan's voice suddenly echoed one final time.

Quiet.

Almost like a warning.

"Ethan..."

Everyone froze.

"You still don't understand."

The screen turned on.

Nathan appeared.

His face expressionless.

"You think the Raven Circle is your enemy."

A pause.

"But the truth is..."

Nathan looked directly at Ethan.

"The person who created Project Atlas..."

"Was not William."

The room went silent.

Nathan whispered:

"It was Eleanor."

Sophia's blood turned cold.

"My mother?"

Nathan smiled faintly.

"And she left one final secret..."

May you like

The screen went black.

"A secret only Ethan knows."
