CHAPTER 8 The Man Behind the Raven Mask

The mechanical voice echoed through the bunker.

"William Blackwood... you have sixty seconds."

"Surrender Project Atlas..."

"...or everyone underground dies."

Silence followed.

Only the steady beep... beep... beep of the emergency lights filled the concrete corridors.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Somewhere beyond the reinforced blast door, cutting torches screamed against steel.

Rebecca checked the magazine in her pistol.

"Twelve rounds."

Daniel looked at the tactical monitor.

"They have at least fifty armed men."

William quietly folded the Project Atlas folder and slipped it beneath his coat.

"They're not here for the file."

Sophia frowned.

"Then why threaten us?"

Thomas answered.

"Because they believe William knows where Ethan is."

William's jaw tightened.

"They're wrong."

Thomas looked directly into his eyes.

"I hope so."

Another explosion shook the bunker.

The steel door bent inward.

A narrow line of daylight appeared through the crack.

Rebecca took position beside the entrance.

"Everyone behind cover!"

Lily hid behind an overturned metal cabinet.

Her hands trembled uncontrollably.

Sophia knelt beside her.

"Listen to me."

"No matter what happens..."

"You stay beside me."

Lily nodded through tears.

"I don't want to lose anyone else."

Sophia gently hugged her.

"You won't."

William suddenly spoke.

"There is another exit."

Thomas looked surprised.

"I thought it collapsed years ago."

"So did everyone else."

William pointed toward the blueprint hanging on the wall.

"A supply tunnel."

"It leads beneath the cliffs."

Rebecca immediately shook her head.

"If we split up, they'll hunt us down one by one."

William remained calm.

"They're already hunting us."

The blast door groaned.

A section of glowing metal crashed to the floor.

Dark figures became visible through the smoke.

Black tactical armor.

Silver raven insignias.

Night-vision helmets.

Each man moved with military precision.

The Raven Circle had arrived.

One soldier stepped through first.

He raised his rifle—

Before he could fire—

Rebecca shot the weapon from his hands.

The bunker erupted into chaos.

Gunfire echoed through the narrow corridor.

Concrete shattered.

Lights exploded overhead.

Daniel and the detectives returned fire while William pulled Sophia and Lily toward the hidden passage.

"Move!"

The tunnel was narrow.

Cold seawater dripped from the ceiling.

The air smelled of salt and rust.

Behind them, gunfire continued.

Lily stumbled.

Sophia caught her.

"Keep going."

"I can't..."

"You can."

William led the way with surprising speed.

Despite his age, he knew every turn.

Every hidden doorway.

Every forgotten passage.

It was obvious.

He had built this place.

After several minutes...

The tunnel widened into a circular chamber.

At its center stood an enormous steel elevator.

Ancient.

Covered in dust.

Thomas stared.

"I forgot this existed."

William pressed his palm against a small bronze plate.

Nothing happened.

Then...

A soft electronic tone.

The elevator doors slowly opened.

Sophia blinked.

"It still has power?"

William nodded.

"Emergency generators."

As everyone stepped inside—

A bullet ricocheted off the doorway.

The Raven Circle had found the tunnel.

Rebecca fired twice.

"Go!"

The elevator doors closed just as several soldiers reached them.

Metal rang beneath a hail of bullets.

Then...

The elevator began descending.

Not upward.

Down.

Much deeper underground.

Lily looked around in confusion.

"I thought we were escaping."

William answered quietly.

"We are."

"Then why are we going deeper?"

"Because the tunnel doesn't lead out."

"It leads..."

"...to the place your mother trusted more than anyone."

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

Everyone stared.

Before them stretched an enormous underground chamber unlike anything they had imagined.

It wasn't military.

It wasn't abandoned.

It was...

A library.

Thousands of books.

Rows of filing cabinets.

Maps covering entire walls.

Old computers.

Radio equipment.

Generators.

It looked as though someone had been working there until recently.

Sophia whispered,

"What is this place?"

Thomas smiled sadly.

"Eleanor called it..."

"The Memory Room."

Lily slowly walked between the shelves.

Every cabinet carried names.

Photographs.

Dates.

Secret files.

Rebecca opened one.

Inside were detailed investigations on powerful businessmen.

Another contained judges.

Another senators.

Another international corporations.

Daniel stared in disbelief.

"This is enough evidence to destroy half the country's political elite."

William nodded.

"Which is exactly why the Raven Circle wants it."

Sophia noticed something else.

The walls were covered with children's drawings.

Crayon sketches.

Stick figures.

A lighthouse.

A little boy.

Two girls.

A smiling woman.

Lily stopped before one drawing.

Written in childish handwriting:

Me, Sophia, Lily and Mommy

She burst into tears.

"Ethan drew this..."

Thomas nodded.

"He lived here for almost a year."

Sophia gently touched the drawing.

"He remembered us."

"He never forgot."

Thomas smiled.

"Not for a single day."

Suddenly...

William froze.

His eyes fixed on a chessboard sitting alone on a wooden desk.

The game was unfinished.

White king.

Black queen.

One final move remained.

William whispered,

"He was here."

Rebecca frowned.

"Who?"

"Alexander."

She looked around.

"How do you know?"

William pointed.

"He never left a chess game unfinished."

Sophia noticed a folded piece of paper beneath the white king.

She picked it up.

Only one sentence had been written.

You're twenty-four hours too late.

Rebecca cursed under her breath.

"He knew we were coming."

Thomas's face turned pale.

"No..."

"He left this for us."

Sophia turned the page over.

There was another message.

This one written hastily.

Don't follow Ethan. They'll expect it.

Follow the man pretending to protect him.

The room fell silent.

William slowly looked at Thomas.

Thomas looked back.

"No..."

William whispered.

"It isn't him."

Rebecca frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

William's expression hardened.

"Someone inside our family..."

"...has been working with the Raven Circle."

At that exact moment...

The old radio on the desk crackled to life by itself.

Static filled the chamber.

Then a calm male voice spoke.

"Good."

"You found my message."

Sophia stepped toward the radio.

"Who are you?"

A brief silence.

Then...

"You've spent twenty years searching for Ethan."

Another pause.

"You should have spent those years searching for me."

William's face lost all color.

"No..."

The voice laughed softly.

"Hello, Father."

Lily gasped.

Rebecca stared at William.

Sophia felt her heart stop.

Father?

The voice continued.

"You've been chasing the wrong son all along."

William whispered,

"Alexander..."

"No."

The man interrupted.

"Alexander died seven years ago."

Silence crushed the room.

"My name..."

the voice said calmly,

"...is Nathan Blackwood."

William staggered backward.

Impossible.

Nathan had been declared dead as a child nearly forty years earlier.

Yet the voice continued.

"And before you ask..."

"Yes."

"I'm the one who built the Raven Circle into what it is today."

The transmission ended.

Only static remained.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

William slowly sank into the chair before the unfinished chessboard.

His hands trembled.

"My son..."

May you like

he whispered.

"...has been my greatest enemy all along."
