CHAPTER 17 The Original Atlas Chamber

The tunnel stretched endlessly beneath the facility.
Cold air rushed through the narrow passage.
The walls were covered with old markings.
Numbers.
Names.
Dates.
Memories of people who had disappeared.
The countdown continued.
00:27:12
00:27:11
00:27:10
Every second brought them closer to the end.
Ethan walked silently.
Sophia noticed.
She knew that look.
The same expression he had when he was hiding pain.
"Ethan."
He stopped.
"What?"
Sophia looked at him.
"You're thinking about what Victoria said."
He looked away.
"What if she's right?"
Sophia frowned.
"About what?"
"About me."
A pause.
"What if I'm not who I think I am?"
Sophia stepped in front of him.
"You think a machine can choose to protect a child?"
Ethan said nothing.
"You think a machine can miss someone for twenty years?"
Silence.
"You think a machine can forgive?"
Ethan looked at her.
Sophia's voice softened.
"You are not what they created."
"You are what you chose to become."
For the first time in hours...
Ethan allowed himself to believe that.
Behind them, William walked beside Emma.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Finally...
William stopped.
"Emma."
She turned.
"I remember."
Emma froze.
William's eyes filled with pain.
"The night you disappeared."
Emma looked away.
"You shouldn't."
"I saw you."
A pause.
"You were carrying Ethan."
Emma's expression changed.
"You remember that?"
William nodded slowly.
"Fragments."
"Not everything."
"But enough."
The memory returned.
A younger William running through the laboratory.
Alarms everywhere.
Eleanor screaming.
Children crying.
And Emma holding Ethan's hand.
William had found them.
But he hadn't saved them.
"I failed you."
Emma looked at him.
"Yes."
William lowered his head.
"But you also tried."
A long silence.
Emma whispered:
"That's why I hated you."
William looked up.
"But you still came back."
Emma's eyes became wet.
"Because Ethan needed his family."
A sudden sound interrupted them.
CLICK.
Everyone stopped.
Rebecca raised her weapon.
"What was that?"
Daniel checked the scanner.
"Something moved ahead."
The tunnel lights flickered.
A shadow passed across the wall.
Then disappeared.
Alexander looked uneasy.
"Something is wrong."
Rebecca looked at him.
"You're finally admitting something?"
Alexander ignored her.
"This facility has two security systems."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"The original Atlas system."
"And Victoria's version."
Emma's expression changed.
"She activated Genesis."
Everyone stopped.
Sophia looked at her.
"What is Genesis?"
Emma hesitated.
Then:
"The first version of Project Atlas."
William looked confused.
"I thought Atlas started with memory technology."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
"That was only phase two."
Daniel looked at the files.
"What was phase one?"
Emma answered quietly:
"Creation."
The word echoed.
Ethan looked at her.
"Creation of what?"
Emma looked toward the end of the tunnel.
"Humans."
Nobody spoke.
Finally, they reached the end.
A massive steel door stood before them.
Older than everything else.
Covered with a symbol.
Not the silver raven.
Something older.
A black raven with its wings spread.
William touched the symbol.
His hand trembled.
"I remember this."
Sophia looked at him.
"What?"
He whispered:
"This was before the Raven Circle."
Daniel found a control panel.
"No power."
Emma stepped forward.
"It doesn't use electricity."
She placed her hand on the scanner.
The system activated.
A voice echoed.
"Identity confirmed."
"Subject E-008."
Everyone turned.
Emma closed her eyes.
The door opened.
Inside was the original Atlas chamber.
And everyone immediately understood.
This wasn't a laboratory.
It was a cathedral.
A place built to worship an idea.
In the center stood a massive glass chamber.
Inside...
A chair.
Thousands of wires.
Memory devices.
Neural scanners.
And on the wall:
ATLAS GENESIS
FIRST HUMAN MEMORY ARCHITECTURE
Ethan walked closer.
His face changed.
Because he recognized the room.
"I was here."
Sophia looked at him.
"You remember?"
He nodded.
"I was small."
A pause.
"But I remember."
A recording automatically started.
Eleanor appeared.
Younger.
Terrified.
"If you are watching this..."
"Then Genesis has been activated."
She looked directly into the camera.
"My greatest fear has come true."
Everyone listened.
Eleanor continued:
"William believed he was building a way to preserve humanity."
"But Victoria changed the purpose."
"She wanted to manufacture it."
The recording showed files.
Human embryos.
Genetic data.
Artificial memory patterns.
Sophia covered her mouth.
"No..."
Eleanor continued:
"Genesis was never about changing memories."
"It was about creating people who could carry unlimited memories."
The camera focused on a file.
FIRST SUCCESSFUL SUBJECT
Everyone stared.
The name appeared.
ETHAN BLACKWOOD
Ethan stepped back.
"No..."
Eleanor's voice continued:
"Ethan was not created to be a weapon."
"He was created because I believed every human being deserved a chance to become more than their circumstances."
Sophia looked at Ethan.
Tears filled her eyes.
"But Victoria saw him differently."
Eleanor continued.
"She saw him as proof."
"Proof that humans could be designed."
The recording ended.
Silence.
Then...
A slow clap echoed.
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood at the entrance.
She smiled.
"Beautiful, wasn't it?"
Rebecca raised her weapon.
"You followed us."
Victoria walked into the chamber.
"I built this place."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You lied to me."
Victoria looked at him.
"No."
"I told you exactly what you were."
Ethan's voice hardened.
"You told me I wasn't human."
Victoria smiled.
"Because you aren't ordinary."
William moved between them.
"Stay away from him."
Victoria looked at William.
"Still protecting your creation?"
William's eyes narrowed.
"He is my grandson."
Victoria laughed.
"That's the problem."
"You finally learned to love him."
The countdown appeared on the wall.
00:10:00
Daniel looked at the timer.
"Ten minutes."
Victoria walked toward the central console.
"You have a choice."
Everyone prepared.
"What choice?"
Victoria looked at Ethan.
"You can destroy Atlas."
A pause.
"Or you can activate it."
Sophia stared.
"Why would he activate it?"
Victoria smiled.
"Because if he activates it..."
She looked at Ethan.
"He can bring back everyone who was lost."
Ethan froze.
Victoria whispered:
"Every memory."
"Every person."
"Every moment."
William looked at him.
"Ethan..."
But Ethan wasn't listening.
Because Victoria had found the one thing he wanted more than anything.
A chance.
To see Eleanor again.
To hear her voice.
To bring back the family he lost.
The machine powered on.
ATLAS GENESIS READY
Nathan's voice suddenly came through the speakers.
"Ethan."
Everyone froze.
Nathan sounded desperate.
"Don't listen to her."
Victoria smiled.
"Still protecting him?"
Nathan answered:
"Yes."
A pause.
Then Nathan said:
"Because I know what happens when you choose the past over the people standing beside you."
The chamber went silent.
Ethan looked at the machine.
Then at Sophia.
Then Lily.
Then William.
The countdown reached:
00:05:00
Victoria extended her hand.
"Choose."
May you like
The entire world waited.
And Ethan reached toward the control panel.
