CHAPTER 14 The Sister Hidden in the Shadows

The screen went black.
But nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because one name remained in everyone's mind.
Emma.
Ethan stood frozen in front of the monitor.
The color had disappeared from his face.
His hands trembled.
Sophia had seen Ethan afraid before.
During the experiments.
During the escape.
During the years he spent hiding.
But this was different.
This wasn't fear of an enemy.
This was fear of hope.
Lily slowly approached him.
"Ethan..."
He didn't answer.
She touched his arm.
"Who is Emma?"
Ethan closed his eyes.
For several seconds...
He couldn't speak.
Then finally:
"My sister."
The room fell silent.
William looked confused.
"You had a sister?"
Ethan looked at him.
"You don't remember."
William's expression changed.
"What do you mean?"
Ethan stared at the floor.
"Because they erased her from your memories too."
Sophia stepped closer.
"Ethan..."
Her voice was gentle.
"What happened to her?"
Ethan looked toward the old laboratory.
"Her name was Emma Blackwood."
"She was three years younger than me."
A pause.
"She was the only person who stayed with me in Project Atlas."
The memory came back.
A small room.
Cold walls.
Machines.
A young Ethan sitting alone.
Crying silently.
Then a little girl entering.
Holding a worn-out stuffed rabbit.
She sat beside him.
And whispered:
"I'm Emma."
"You're not alone anymore."
Ethan opened his eyes.
"She wasn't like the others."
"She wasn't afraid."
"She believed we could escape."
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
"What happened?"
Ethan looked at the screen.
"She disappeared."
Charles's voice suddenly interrupted.
"Not disappeared."
Everyone turned.
The old man's face appeared again.
"She evolved."
Ethan stepped toward the camera.
"What did you do to her?"
Charles smiled.
"The same thing we did to Nathan."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"You turned her into a weapon."
Charles shook his head.
"No."
"Something much greater."
Alexander looked at the screen.
"Charles..."
For the first time, his voice carried anger.
"You promised there would be no more children."
Charles looked at him.
"And you promised you could control Nathan."
Silence.
The two men stared at each other.
A battle between two monsters.
Rebecca noticed.
"Wait."
She looked at Alexander.
"You betrayed him?"
Alexander didn't answer.
Charles smiled.
"Alexander always believed he was different."
"He thought he saved children."
"But he was only another Raven."
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"Enough."
Charles ignored him.
"Tell them the truth."
"You weren't Ethan's protector."
"You were his jailer."
Sophia looked at Alexander.
"Is that true?"
Alexander remained silent.
That was answer enough.
Ethan stepped forward.
"You were the one watching us."
Alexander looked at him.
"Yes."
"You were the one who moved us between facilities."
"Yes."
"You were the one who told Eleanor she couldn't save us."
Alexander lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
Lily looked horrified.
"Then why are you helping us now?"
Alexander looked at her.
Because that question hurt more than any accusation.
"Because I finally understood."
A pause.
"I wasn't saving children."
"I was protecting the system that destroyed them."
A loud alarm interrupted them.
Daniel checked the computer.
"The bunker is losing power."
William frowned.
"Why?"
Daniel pointed to the screen.
"Someone is accessing the main generator."
Charles smiled.
"Emma."
Ethan froze.
"What?"
Charles looked pleased.
"She knows you're here."
The floor beneath them shook.
A hidden elevator activated.
The doors slowly opened.
Everyone raised their weapons.
But Ethan stepped forward.
"No."
Sophia grabbed his arm.
"Ethan, wait."
He looked at her.
"If it's her..."
His voice broke.
"I need to know."
The elevator descended.
Slowly.
Silently.
Nobody spoke.
The deeper they went...
The colder it became.
The walls changed.
Old concrete disappeared.
Replaced by white laboratory panels.
Project Atlas.
The original facility.
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
Inside was a room unlike anything they had seen.
Not a prison.
Not a laboratory.
A home.
A bedroom.
Books.
Paintings.
Plants.
A child's world preserved in time.
Lily whispered:
"Someone lived here."
Ethan stepped inside.
His eyes moved across the room.
Everything was familiar.
The bookshelf.
The desk.
The drawings.
Then he saw something.
A small wooden box.
On the table.
His name carved into it.
ETHAN
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside:
A photograph.
Two children.
Ethan.
Emma.
Standing beside Eleanor.
Everyone looked.
Sophia covered her mouth.
Because Eleanor was smiling.
Truly smiling.
A side of her mother she had never known.
Behind the photograph was a note.
Ethan unfolded it.
Only a few words.
But they changed everything.
"Ethan, if you found this..."
"Then Emma succeeded."
Sophia whispered:
"Succeeded at what?"
Ethan turned the paper over.
The back contained another message.
His eyes widened.
"No..."
William stepped closer.
"What?"
Ethan handed him the note.
William read it.
And his hands began shaking.
"The person controlling Project Atlas was never Charles."
"Charles was only a guardian."
"The real architect is someone still inside the Blackwood family."
Everyone froze.
Rebecca looked around.
"Another traitor?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He pointed at the note.
"Not someone working with Project Atlas."
"Someone who created it."
The lights flickered.
A figure appeared behind the glass wall.
A woman.
Young.
Calm.
Watching them.
Ethan slowly turned.
The glass door opened.
The woman stepped forward.
Same eyes.
Same face from the photograph.
Older.
But alive.
"Ethan."
His breathing stopped.
"Emma..."
She smiled sadly.
"I knew you would come."
Sophia stared.
"How are you alive?"
Emma looked at her.
"Because my death was part of the plan."
William stepped forward.
"Whose plan?"
Emma looked directly at him.
And answered:
"Yours."
William froze.
"What?"
Emma's expression changed.
Not hatred.
Pain.
"You forgot."
A pause.
"You asked Eleanor to erase your memories."
The room became silent.
Sophia looked at William.
"No..."
Emma continued:
"Because you discovered the truth."
"The truth about who really created Project Atlas."
She looked at everyone.
Then at Ethan.
And whispered:
"The first Raven wasn't Charles."
A terrible silence.
Emma spoke the final words:
May you like
"The first Raven..."
"...was William Blackwood."
