CHAPTER 7 The Letter Ethan Never Read

No one reached for the envelope.

It rested quietly on the old wooden table, its yellowed edges betraying the passage of time.

Sophia stared at the handwriting.

She recognized it instantly.

Her mother's.

The same elegant curves.

The same graceful strokes.

Lily whispered,

"Mom..."

Thomas slowly nodded.

"Eleanor wrote that letter the night before everything fell apart."

William looked away.

"I told her to burn it."

Thomas sighed.

"She said one day her children would need the truth more than they needed protection."

Silence settled over the underground bunker.

Finally...

Sophia picked up the envelope.

Her fingers trembled.

She broke the faded wax seal.

Inside were three folded pages.

And one photograph.

The picture showed Eleanor sitting on the floor with three small children.

Sophia was laughing.

Lily was asleep in her mother's lap.

A baby boy reached toward the camera.

Across the bottom, Eleanor had written:

My whole world.

A tear slipped down Lily's cheek.

"I don't remember this."

Sophia wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"I'll remember enough for both of us."

She unfolded the first page.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

My beloved children,

If this letter has reached you, then the people I feared have finally failed.

I pray that means you are alive.

The room remained perfectly still.

Everything you have been told about our family is a lie.

Rebecca looked up.

Another lie.

Another layer.

How many were left?

Sophia continued.

Your grandfather William is not the monster people believe...

...but neither is he innocent.

William closed his eyes.

He didn't object.

He simply listened.

He made one terrible decision.

He trusted the wrong people.

Thomas slowly lowered his head.

"I warned him."

William answered quietly.

"I know."

The letter continued.

The Blackwood fortune was never what they wanted.

Sophia frowned.

"What?"

Rebecca leaned closer.

"If not the company..."

"Then what?"

Sophia kept reading.

They wanted Project Atlas.

The words meant nothing to Lily.

But William staggered backward.

"No..."

Rebecca immediately noticed.

"You know what Atlas is."

William remained silent.

Thomas answered instead.

"It wasn't a project."

"It was a list."

Everyone looked at him.

"A list of what?"

Thomas spoke carefully.

"Names."

"Powerful names."

"Politicians."

"Judges."

"Military officers."

"Corporate executives."

"Everyone secretly controlled by one organization."

"The Raven Circle."

Daniel frowned.

"So whoever owned that list..."

"...could destroy them."

Thomas nodded.

"Or control them."

Sophia resumed reading.

Your father refused to sell Project Atlas.

That decision signed his death warrant.

Lily looked confused.

"Our father was murdered?"

William whispered,

"No."

"He escaped."

Rebecca looked sharply at him.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because I had no proof."

The final page shook in Sophia's hands.

She read slowly.

If anything happens to me...

Never search for Atlas.

Search for your brother.

Lily covered her mouth.

Because Ethan doesn't know it...

...but he became the hiding place.

Silence.

No one understood.

Thomas finally spoke.

"The list was never hidden inside a vault."

Rebecca frowned.

"What are you saying?"

Thomas looked directly at Sophia.

"Ethan memorized it."

The room froze.

William whispered,

"My God..."

Thomas nodded.

"He was only four years old."

"How could a child memorize hundreds of names?"

Thomas smiled sadly.

"Because your father trained him."

Lily couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"Our father turned a child into..."

"A living vault."

Thomas finished.

Sophia slowly sat down.

Everything suddenly made sense.

"They didn't kidnap Ethan because of money."

"No."

Rebecca answered.

"They kidnapped him because he carried the only copy."

William looked toward Thomas.

"Where is Alexander?"

Thomas hesitated.

"He tried to move Ethan."

"When?"

"Three nights ago."

"What happened?"

Thomas looked away.

"They were ambushed."

Sophia's heart sank.

"Is Alexander alive?"

"I don't know."

"And Ethan?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I lost contact after the attack."

At that moment...

A sharp electronic beep echoed through the bunker.

Daniel looked at one of the old surveillance monitors.

"They found us."

Everyone turned.

On the screen...

Five black SUVs crossed the bridge toward Blackwater Island.

Then ten.

Then fifteen.

Men in black tactical gear poured out.

Their uniforms bore a silver raven insignia.

Rebecca counted quickly.

"At least forty."

William shook his head.

"No."

He zoomed the camera.

"There are more coming by boat."

Sophia looked around.

"How did they know we were here?"

No one answered.

Then...

A phone vibrated.

Everyone looked toward the sound.

It came from William's coat pocket.

His satellite phone.

The same one that had received the mysterious call the previous night.

The screen displayed:

Incoming Secure Signal

William's face turned pale.

"I didn't turn this on."

Thomas stared at him.

"Give it to me."

He answered the call.

A distorted voice spoke only one sentence.

"You should have left Sophia behind."

The line disconnected.

Silence.

Rebecca slowly turned toward William.

"No one knew we were coming."

Thomas finished the thought.

"Except us."

Sophia felt a chill run down her spine.

She looked at William.

Then remembered the hidden message in her mother's letter.

Trust no one.

Not even William.

Her pulse quickened.

Had her mother been right all along?

Or was someone trying to make them distrust the only person who still knew the truth?

Before anyone could speak...

The bunker lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed everything.

A loud metallic explosion shook the underground facility.

Emergency red lights flickered on.

Daniel shouted,

"They've breached the outer tunnel!"

Gunfire erupted somewhere above them.

Rebecca drew her pistol.

William opened an old steel cabinet built into the wall.

Inside rested several locked cases.

He opened one.

Not weapons.

Maps.

Blueprints.

Old intelligence files.

He grabbed only one folder.

Across its cover, stamped in faded black ink, were two words:

PROJECT ATLAS

Sophia stared at it.

"I thought you said there wasn't a copy."

William answered without looking at her.

"There isn't."

She frowned.

"Then what is that?"

William met her eyes.

"The instructions..."

"...for finding the man who still remembers every name."

Another explosion rocked the bunker.

Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.

A steel blast door at the far end slowly buckled inward.

Someone on the other side was cutting through it.

A deep mechanical voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"William Blackwood."

"You have sixty seconds."

May you like

"Surrender Project Atlas."

"Or everyone in the bunker dies."
