CHAPTER 9-The Empty Bedroom

Rachel never remembered running upstairs.
Later, she would remember the sound of her own heartbeat.
The panic in her chest.
The way her hands shook when she grabbed the empty blanket on Maddie's bed.
But she couldn't remember the steps.
She couldn't remember opening the door.
All she remembered was seeing the room.
Empty.
Her daughter's room.
Empty.
"Maddie!"
Her scream echoed through the house.
Grant came running.
"What happened?"
Rachel turned toward him.
Her face was completely pale.
"She's gone."
For one second, Grant didn't understand.
Then he looked at the empty bed.
And the world stopped.
"No."
He rushed forward.
"Maddie!"
He searched the room.
The closet.
Under the bed.
The bathroom.
Anywhere a five-year-old child could hide.
But there was nothing.
Only the note.
Grant picked it up.
His hands started shaking.
Rachel watched him read the sentence.
Ask Grant why Adrian Hayes called him his first success.
Grant's face changed.
Not because he didn't understand.
Because he did.
Rachel saw it.
And that terrified her more than anything.
"What does it mean?"
Grant said nothing.
"Grant."
Still nothing.
She grabbed his arm.
"What does it mean?"
His eyes filled with guilt.
"I don't know."
Rachel pulled away.
"No."
Her voice became cold.
"You do."
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
The house became full of strangers.
Officers.
Detectives.
Questions.
But Rachel barely heard any of them.
Because every question reminded her of one thing.
She failed.
She was supposed to protect Maddie.
And now her daughter was gone.
Detective Harris looked at the note.
"Do you know this Adrian Hayes?"
Grant and Rachel exchanged a look.
Then Grant answered.
"Yes."
The detective noticed.
"How do you know him?"
Grant hesitated.
Rachel stepped forward.
"He's connected to our fertility clinic."
The detective looked confused.
"What does a fertility doctor have to do with a kidnapping?"
Nobody answered.
Because the truth sounded impossible.
Michael arrived an hour later.
The moment he saw the police, he knew.
"What happened?"
Rachel looked at him.
"They took her."
His face changed.
"Who?"
She handed him the note.
Michael read it.
Then his expression became dark.
"No."
Grant looked at him.
"What?"
Michael stared at the words.
"Hayes isn't trying to hide anymore."
"What does that mean?"
Michael looked at Rachel.
"It means he finally believes he has control."
Rachel felt anger replacing fear.
"Where would he take her?"
Michael didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"The facility."
The abandoned research building stood two hours outside the city.
According to Michael, it had been closed for years.
But Hayes had always kept private locations.
Places where records didn't exist.
Places where nobody would ask questions.
Rachel sat in the car beside Grant.
Neither spoke.
The silence between them was different now.
Not anger.
Not resentment.
Fear.
Finally, Grant whispered:
"I need to tell you something."
Rachel looked at him.
"What?"
"About Maddie."
Her heart tightened.
"What about her?"
Grant looked down.
"When Hayes said I was his first success..."
He stopped.
Rachel waited.
"I knew there was something strange about my medical history."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"When we tried to have children..."
His voice broke.
"The doctors said I had a genetic issue."
Rachel remembered.
The fertility treatments.
The diagnosis.
The pain.
"They said I couldn't have biological children."
Grant nodded.
"But they were wrong."
Rachel stared.
"What?"
"They weren't treating infertility."
A pause.
"They were hiding something."
The car became silent.
"What are you saying?"
Grant looked at her.
"My body was changed."
Rachel felt cold.
"Changed?"
"Manipulated."
He swallowed.
"Hayes wasn't trying to create children."
"He was trying to create a specific genetic pattern."
Rachel whispered:
"And Maddie?"
Grant looked away.
"She inherited it."
When they arrived at the facility, it looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Old concrete walls.
No signs of life.
But Michael knew better.
"There."
He pointed.
A small camera above the entrance.
Someone was watching.
Rachel felt sick.
"He knows we're here."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
Grant stepped forward.
"Then let's go inside."
The building smelled like dust and chemicals.
The hallway lights flickered.
Rachel held Grant's hand tightly.
Then they heard it.
A child's voice.
"Mommy?"
Rachel stopped.
"Maddie!"
She ran forward.
Grant grabbed her arm.
"Wait."
They looked around.
The voice came again.
"Mommy!"
This time, Rachel knew.
It was her daughter.
They followed the sound.
Into a large room.
And there she was.
Maddie.
Sitting at a table.
A woman beside her.
Not Hayes.
Not Evelyn.
Someone else.
Rachel rushed forward.
"Maddie!"
Her daughter ran into her arms.
Rachel held her so tightly she was afraid she would disappear.
"Are you okay?"
Maddie nodded.
"I was scared."
Rachel kissed her hair.
"Who brought you here?"
The little girl looked toward the woman.
The woman stood slowly.
She looked familiar.
Too familiar.
Grant froze.
Because he recognized her.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked at him.
"My name is Claire."
A pause.
"And I am your sister."
Grant stared.
"I don't have a sister."
Claire smiled sadly.
"That's what they wanted you to believe."
Michael stepped forward.
Another missing piece.
Another hidden child.
"How many of us are there?"
Claire looked around the room.
"More than you know."
Rachel held Maddie closer.
"Why did you bring my daughter here?"
Claire looked at her.
"Because I was trying to save her."
Rachel didn't trust her.
"From who?"
Claire's eyes moved toward the dark hallway.
Then she whispered:
"From Adrian Hayes."
Everyone froze.
"But he is the one who created this."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
"He is the one who lost control."
A sound came from the speakers above them.
A familiar voice.
Adrian Hayes.
"Claire."
Everyone looked up.
"You disappoint me."
Claire stepped in front of Rachel and Maddie.
"You were never going to stop."
Hayes laughed softly.
"No."
His voice became colder.
"I was going to finish."
The lights turned off.
Darkness filled the room.
Then the screen above them turned on.
A medical file appeared.
Not Maddie's.
Not Grant's.
Rachel's.
Her blood ran cold.
"What is that?"
Hayes spoke.
"The final piece."
Grant looked at the screen.
"What did you do?"
Hayes answered calmly.
"I didn't do anything."
A pause.
"Your wife was chosen long before she met you."
Rachel felt the world shift.
"What?"
Hayes continued.
"Rachel, you think this story started with Maddie."
The screen changed.
Showing a photograph.
A young Rachel.
A hospital record.
A genetic report.
Rachel stopped breathing.
"No..."
Hayes whispered:
"The Bennett bloodline did not begin with Grant."
A pause.
"It began with you."
The screen went black.
And Rachel realized the truth was far bigger than her family.
May you like
She was not investigating the secret.
She was part of it.
