CHAPTER 18-The Truth About Rachel Carter

Rachel couldn't move.

She stared at the screen.

The words remained unchanged.

Rachel Carter was not created by Adrian Hayes.

She was created to stop him.

For weeks, she had believed her entire life was a lie.

Her marriage.

Her daughter.

Her identity.

Everything.

But now another possibility appeared.

Maybe she wasn't the victim of the experiment.

Maybe she was the reason it failed.

"Open the file."

Grant's voice was quiet.

Rachel looked at him.

For the first time in days, she saw something different in his eyes.

Not fear.

Hope.

Michael stepped closer to the computer.

"I didn't know this existed."

Rachel looked at him.

"You knew everything else."

Michael accepted the accusation.

"I deserve that."

He pressed the file.

The screen filled with documents.

Old medical records.

Research notes.

Private letters.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Dr. Samuel Carter.

Rachel's father.

The first document was dated thirty years earlier.

A medical report.

The patient:

Catherine Carter.

Rachel froze.

Her grandmother's name.

She looked at the page.

The report described a genetic study.

But unlike Hayes' other documents, the language was different.

There were no numbers.

No subjects.

No experiments.

Only one word.

Protection.

Rachel whispered:

"My father wasn't working with Hayes."

Michael shook his head.

"He was working against him."

The story slowly revealed itself.

Years earlier, Adrian Hayes had begun his research with one belief.

That genetics could predict human potential.

That certain traits could be selected.

Controlled.

Repeated.

But not everyone agreed.

One of those people was Samuel Carter.

Rachel's father.

Samuel had originally worked alongside Hayes as a medical researcher.

He believed they were studying diseases.

Finding cures.

Helping families.

Then he discovered the truth.

Hayes wasn't trying to cure anything.

He was trying to design people.

When Samuel tried to expose him, Hayes threatened him.

He threatened his career.

His family.

His daughter.

Rachel.

So Samuel made a choice.

He couldn't destroy Hayes immediately.

But he could create something Hayes couldn't control.

A child with the ability to survive outside his system.

A child whose genetics could not be predicted.

Rachel.

Rachel shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her eyes.

"My father still made a decision about my life."

Grant stepped closer.

"Rachel..."

"No."

She looked at him.

"I understand why he did it."

A pause.

"But I still deserved the truth."

Nobody argued.

Because she was right.

Love did not erase the pain caused by secrets.

Another document appeared.

This one was a letter from Samuel.

Addressed to Rachel.

But never delivered.

"My dear Rachel,"

"If you are reading this, then Adrian Hayes finally found the truth."

Rachel covered her mouth.

"I know you will feel betrayed."

"You will wonder why I allowed you to grow up without knowing."

"But I need you to understand something."

"Adrian does not fear powerful people."

"He does not fear money."

"He does not fear the law."

"The only thing he fears is someone he cannot control."

Rachel continued reading.

"That person is you."

Grant looked at Rachel.

"Why?"

Michael answered.

"Because Hayes created patterns."

A pause.

"But your father created unpredictability."

Rachel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Michael pointed to the research.

"Everyone connected to Hayes had genetic markers he could track."

"Grant."

"Michael."

"The others."

He looked at Rachel.

"But you didn't."

"Why?"

"Because your father changed the process."

Rachel looked at the file.

"He altered my genetics?"

Michael shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"He protected them."

Then they discovered the most shocking detail.

Rachel's father had secretly removed her records from Hayes' system.

He erased her.

Made her invisible.

Hayes spent decades searching for her.

Not because she was part of his success.

Because she was the only person who proved his theory could be defeated.

And then Rachel met Grant.

A person Hayes had created.

A person carrying his bloodline.

The one combination Hayes could never predict.

Someone who could choose love over genetics.

Rachel sat down.

The weight of everything finally hit her.

"Then Maddie..."

Grant looked at her.

Rachel whispered:

"Was she planned?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Michael said:

"Yes."

Rachel closed her eyes.

The answer hurt.

"But not the way Hayes wanted."

She looked up.

"What do you mean?"

Michael opened another file.

Inside was Samuel's research.

A note written beside Maddie's name.

The child must be protected from both bloodlines.

Rachel read it carefully.

Her father's handwriting.

Then she understood.

Her father had known.

Before Maddie was born.

He knew Hayes would try to use the Bennett family again.

So he created a hidden safeguard.

A way to protect Maddie.

Rachel looked at Grant.

"He knew we would meet."

Grant looked stunned.

"He knew."

"He knew Hayes would try to combine our families."

A pause.

"But he also knew something else."

"What?"

Rachel looked at the final page.

Her voice trembled.

"He knew love would be the variable Hayes couldn't measure."

Suddenly, every screen in the archive went black.

Everyone froze.

Then one monitor turned back on.

Adrian Hayes appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

"You finally found it."

Grant stepped forward.

"You knew we would."

Hayes nodded.

"Of course."

Rachel stared.

"You were watching."

"Always."

Her anger exploded.

"You destroyed people's lives."

Hayes looked at her.

"No."

A pause.

"You destroyed my life's work."

Rachel froze.

"What?"

Hayes leaned closer to the camera.

"You were never supposed to escape."

Silence.

"The Carter family ruined everything."

Grant looked confused.

"How?"

Hayes smiled.

"Because Rachel was never the experiment."

A pause.

"She was the control group."

Everyone went silent.

Rachel felt cold.

"What?"

Hayes continued:

"Your father didn't create you to stop me."

He smiled.

"He created you to prove something."

The screen flickered.

Then the final sentence appeared.

"Rachel Carter is the only person alive whose DNA can erase the Bennett experiment."

Rachel stared.

Her entire life changed again.

Because now she understood why Hayes was afraid.

Not because she could expose him.

Because she could destroy everything he built.

The bloodline.

The research.

The legacy.

But then Hayes spoke one final sentence before the screen disappeared.

"Rachel..."

A pause.

"If you erase my work..."

His voice became darker.

"You erase your daughter's existence too."

The screen went black.

May you like

And Rachel realized the final battle was no longer about revealing the truth.

It was about choosing what truth was worth saving.
