CHAPTER 4-The Son Hidden From The World

Rachel remained frozen after the phone call ended.
For several seconds, she didn't even realize she was still holding the phone.
Her mind refused to process the words.
"Your husband's older brother."
Those four words had created a crack in everything she believed about the Bennett family.
Grant had a brother?
A brother connected to the clinic?
A brother who had destroyed records?
She slowly looked at her husband.
Grant was standing near the window.
He had heard enough.
He knew exactly what Daniel Carter meant.
"Who is he?"
Grant didn't answer.
Rachel walked closer.
"Grant."
His face was pale.
"His name is Michael."
The room became silent.
"Michael Bennett?"
Grant nodded.
"Why have I never heard of him?"
Grant looked down.
"Because nobody talks about him."
"Nobody?"
"My family erased him."
Rachel stared.
"Erased?"
Grant sat down.
For the first time since she had known him, he looked small.
Broken.
"My father had a son before my mother."
Rachel's eyes narrowed.
"With another woman?"
"Yes."
"Then why hide him?"
Grant rubbed his forehead.
"Because Michael wasn't supposed to exist."
Rachel felt anger rising.
"Nobody is allowed to say that about a person."
"I know."
"No, Grant."
Her voice hardened.
"Your family spent years making my daughter feel like she didn't belong."
She pointed toward Maddie's room.
"And now I find out your family has been hiding an entire person?"
Grant closed his eyes.
"I was a child when it happened."
Rachel stopped.
"What?"
"Michael disappeared before I was born."
She stared at him.
"Disappeared?"
Grant nodded.
"My father told everyone he was dead."
The silence afterward was terrifying.
"Was he?"
Grant looked at her.
"I don't know."
The next morning, Rachel searched for Daniel Carter.
She found him through public records.
The information was shocking.
Daniel Carter.
Age forty-two.
Born in a small town in Ohio.
No listed father.
No known family.
But his DNA profile had appeared in a public genetic database.
The same database where dozens of people discovered unknown relatives.
Rachel stared at the screen.
Twenty-four matches.
All connected.
All linked to one man.
Thomas Bennett.
The father Grant had spent his entire life trying to honor.
The man everyone believed was perfect.
A respected businessman.
A generous philanthropist.
A loving father.
But behind that image was something darker.
A hidden legacy.
Rachel printed everything.
Then she waited for Grant.
When he came home, she placed the papers on the table.
"We need to talk."
He looked exhausted.
"I know."
"No."
Rachel shook her head.
"You don't know."
She pushed the documents toward him.
"I found them."
Grant looked down.
The color drained from his face.
"You searched the database?"
"Yes."
"Rachel..."
"How many people?"
Grant didn't answer.
"How many children did your father create?"
His silence lasted too long.
Finally:
"I don't know."
Rachel laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
Grant looked hurt.
But she continued.
"You always know just enough to protect yourself."
"That's not fair."
"Fair?"
Her voice rose.
"Do you know what isn't fair?"
She pointed upstairs.
"Our daughter growing up wondering why her own grandmother doubts her."
Grant looked away.
"And now I find out the entire family is built on secrets."
That afternoon, Rachel received another message.
This time from Daniel.
A location.
And one sentence.
"If you want the truth about Dr. Hayes, come alone."
Rachel knew she shouldn't go.
Every instinct told her it was dangerous.
But she also knew something else.
Every time she trusted someone else to tell her the truth, they lied.
So she went.
The meeting place was an old diner outside the city.
Daniel was sitting in the corner.
He looked nothing like she expected.
He wasn't angry.
He wasn't threatening.
He looked tired.
Like someone who had spent his entire life searching for answers.
When Rachel sat down, he immediately placed a folder on the table.
"Before you ask anything, you need to understand."
Rachel looked at him.
"What?"
"Your daughter is not the only victim."
She opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Birth records.
Medical reports.
Letters.
"I found twenty-three people."
Daniel pointed.
"All connected to Thomas Bennett."
Rachel looked through them.
Different states.
Different families.
Different lives.
But one thing was the same.
Every person had been created through the same fertility clinic.
Every record had missing information.
Every donor file had been altered.
"Why would someone do this?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Because Thomas Bennett was valuable."
Rachel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"He was wealthy."
"That doesn't explain anything."
"No."
Daniel leaned forward.
"He was also genetically rare."
Rachel felt uncomfortable.
"What are you saying?"
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Dr. Hayes wasn't just helping couples have children."
A pause.
"He was building a bloodline."
Rachel stared.
The words sounded impossible.
"A bloodline?"
Daniel nodded.
"He believed certain genetic traits should continue."
Rachel felt sick.
"He used people."
"Yes."
"And my daughter?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Your daughter was created from the same genetic material."
Rachel's hands shook.
"But why was Grant connected?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Because that's the part nobody understands."
"What part?"
"Thomas Bennett was supposed to have been infertile after Michael was born."
Rachel froze.
"Supposed to?"
Daniel nodded.
"According to medical records, Thomas couldn't have children naturally."
Rachel whispered:
"Then how was Grant born?"
Daniel looked at her.
"That's what I was trying to find out."
That night, Rachel returned home.
Grant was waiting.
But this time, she saw something different.
Not fear.
Guilt.
"You met Daniel."
It wasn't a question.
Rachel stopped.
"How do you know?"
"Because he contacted me too."
She turned.
"What?"
Grant looked away.
"He has been looking for answers for years."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Grant didn't answer.
Rachel felt the anger returning.
"Why didn't you tell me anything?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Of what?"
Grant's eyes filled with tears.
"That I wasn't really a Bennett."
Rachel became silent.
"What?"
Grant sat down.
"My whole life, I wondered why my father treated me differently."
Rachel listened.
"When Michael disappeared, everyone told me he was dead."
"But?"
"But I found documents when I was sixteen."
"What documents?"
Grant swallowed.
"Adoption papers."
Rachel felt shocked.
"Grant..."
"I was raised as Thomas Bennett's son."
He looked at her.
"But I don't know if I was born as one."
Before Rachel could respond, someone knocked on the door.
Both of them froze.
It was late.
Nobody should be there.
Grant slowly approached.
He opened the door.
And Rachel saw a man standing outside.
Older.
Cold expression.
A face that carried years of anger.
The man looked directly at Grant.
Then at Rachel.
"My name is Michael Bennett."
Rachel stopped breathing.
Grant couldn't move.
The man smiled sadly.
"Hello, little brother."
A long silence followed.
May you like
Then Michael said the words that changed everything.
"I know who your real father is."
