CHAPTER 12-The Wife Chosen Before She Knew

Rachel sat in silence long after the call ended.

The phone remained pressed against her ear.

The detective had already hung up.

But his words stayed.

They repeated inside her mind.

"Adrian Hayes selected you as Grant Bennett's future wife twenty years ago."

Impossible.

That was the only word her brain could produce.

Impossible.

Because Rachel remembered meeting Grant.

She remembered the first time he smiled at her.

The coffee shop.

The rain outside.

The way he apologized after accidentally knocking her books onto the floor.

She remembered falling in love.

She remembered choosing him.

But now someone was telling her something terrifying.

What if she hadn't been the only one making choices?

Grant found her sitting on the porch.

He immediately knew something was wrong.

"What happened?"

Rachel didn't answer.

She handed him the phone.

He read the message.

Then his face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Rachel noticed.

And her heart sank.

"You know something."

Grant looked away.

"Rachel..."

"No."

She stood.

"You know."

He didn't deny it.

That hurt more than anything.

"How long?"

"How long what?"

"How long have you known Adrian Hayes knew about me?"

Grant closed his eyes.

"I didn't know the full story."

"But you knew."

A long silence.

Then:

"Yes."

Rachel stepped back.

Again.

Another secret.

Another silence.

"Why?"

Grant looked broken.

"Because I found a file years ago."

"What file?"

"A file with your name."

Rachel felt cold.

"Before we met?"

He nodded.

The file had been hidden inside Thomas Bennett's old office.

Grant found it when he was twenty-two.

At the time, he thought it was another piece of his father's business records.

He opened it.

And saw Rachel's name.

A woman he had never met.

A woman who would become his wife.

The file contained information.

Her family history.

Her education.

Her personality.

Her medical records.

Even photographs.

Grant had been terrified.

He thought it was a coincidence.

Until years later, when he met Rachel.

At first, he ignored it.

He convinced himself there was an explanation.

But when he realized the woman from the file was the same person standing in front of him...

He buried the truth.

Just like everyone else.

"You knew."

Rachel's voice was barely above a whisper.

"You knew there was a possibility our meeting wasn't random."

Grant nodded.

"I was scared."

Rachel laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

She turned away.

"Everyone is always scared."

"Rachel..."

"No."

She wiped her eyes.

"I spent five years defending you."

"I know."

"I defended our marriage."

"I know."

"I defended my daughter."

His expression broke.

"I know."

She looked at him.

"Did you ever wonder if you actually chose me?"

Grant didn't answer.

And that silence hurt.

Because it was the first time Rachel saw uncertainty in his eyes.

Michael arrived that afternoon.

When he saw their faces, he immediately understood.

"What happened?"

Rachel looked at him.

"Hayes planned my marriage."

Michael became serious.

"What?"

"Apparently, he chose me for Grant."

Michael was quiet.

Then he whispered:

"That explains everything."

Rachel looked at him.

"What?"

Michael opened his bag.

He removed another document.

"I found this yesterday."

Grant took it.

The page was old.

Yellowed.

At the top:

PROJECT BENNETT — FAMILY EXTENSION PLAN

Rachel read.

Her stomach tightened.

The document described future generations.

Not just children.

Families.

Relationships.

Connections.

It wasn't about creating one child.

It was about controlling an entire lineage.

Rachel looked at Michael.

"He planned generations."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

Grant turned the page.

Then stopped.

Rachel noticed.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

She took the paper.

And read the final section.

TARGET FEMALE SUBJECT: RACHEL CARTER

Below it:

OBJECTIVE: Combine Bennett Genetic Line With Carter Genetic Line Through Natural Family Formation.

Rachel felt like she couldn't breathe.

The document didn't say fertility treatment.

It didn't say experiment.

It said:

Natural family formation.

They hadn't just planned Maddie.

They planned Rachel and Grant.

That night, Rachel packed a bag.

Grant watched.

"Where are you going?"

She didn't look at him.

"I don't know."

"Rachel."

"I need space."

His face fell.

"Are you leaving me?"

She stopped.

That question hurt.

Because she still loved him.

But love didn't erase betrayal.

"I don't know."

She picked up Maddie's clothes.

"I need to know which parts of my life were real."

Grant whispered:

"Rachel..."

She looked at him.

"Was our first meeting real?"

He couldn't answer immediately.

And that was enough.

Rachel took Maddie to a hotel.

For the first time in days, there were no secrets around her.

No Bennett house.

No files.

No photographs.

Just her and her daughter.

That night, Maddie looked up.

"Mommy?"

Rachel turned.

"Yes?"

"Are we bad people?"

The question shattered her.

"No."

"Then why does everyone keep secrets?"

Rachel held her.

"Because sometimes adults make mistakes."

Maddie thought for a moment.

"Did Daddy make a mistake?"

Rachel closed her eyes.

The honest answer hurt.

"Yes."

"But does he love me?"

Rachel answered immediately.

"More than anything."

The next morning, Rachel received a letter.

Not an email.

Not a message.

A handwritten letter.

The envelope had one name.

Adrian Hayes

She almost threw it away.

Almost.

Then she saw the first line.

And she froze.

Rachel,

If you are reading this, then you finally discovered the truth about why you were chosen.

Her hands trembled.

She continued.

But there is one thing you do not know.

Grant was never the experiment.

Rachel stopped.

The next sentence made her heart race.

You were.

She kept reading.

Your genetic line was the one I spent twenty years searching for.

The Bennett bloodline was only the beginning.

Maddie is not the end result.

A pause.

Then:

She is the first child who carries both of our discoveries.

Rachel dropped the letter.

Because one terrifying question remained.

May you like

If Maddie was the first...

Who was supposed to come next?
