CHAPTER 11-The Woman Who Helped Build The Monster

Rachel read the name again.

And again.

She waited for it to change.

She waited for her eyes to have misunderstood.

But the file remained the same.

ASSISTANT COLLABORATOR: EVELYN BENNETT

For five years, Rachel had believed Evelyn was simply a cruel woman.

A judgmental mother-in-law.

A grandmother who couldn't accept a child who looked different.

But now the truth was much worse.

Evelyn wasn't only protecting the secret.

She had helped create it.

Rachel slowly lowered the document.

"No."

Grant stood beside her.

His face was empty.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Empty.

Because sometimes the deepest pain came after the shock.

When your mind finally accepted the person who hurt you was someone you loved.

"My mother..."

His voice broke.

Michael looked away.

"I told you."

Grant turned toward him.

"What?"

"That the Bennett family was built on people choosing silence."

Michael's eyes hardened.

"She was one of them."

They found Evelyn at her house.

The same house where Rachel had endured years of quiet humiliation.

The same place where Maddie had been made to feel like she didn't belong.

But today, Rachel walked through those doors differently.

Not as a daughter-in-law seeking approval.

As a mother seeking answers.

Evelyn was sitting in the living room.

She already knew why they came.

"I suppose you found it."

Grant stopped.

"You knew."

Evelyn looked at him.

"I knew you would eventually."

The calmness destroyed him.

"How long?"

Evelyn looked down.

"How long what?"

"How long did you work with him?"

Silence.

Then:

"Twenty-seven years."

Rachel felt sick.

Grant stepped back.

"Twenty-seven."

His voice became quieter.

"All this time."

Evelyn nodded.

"I was trying to fix what I started."

Rachel stared.

"You don't get to call this fixing."

Evelyn looked at her.

"I know."

"No."

Rachel shook her head.

"You don't."

She pointed toward the hallway.

"Do you know what my daughter asked me?"

Evelyn said nothing.

"She asked if she was really Grant's daughter."

The older woman's eyes filled.

Rachel continued.

"She was five years old."

A pause.

"Five."

Evelyn whispered:

"I never wanted that."

"But you created it."

The room became silent.

Grant looked at his mother.

"Why?"

One word.

But it carried decades of pain.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Because I was afraid."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Grant's voice trembled.

"Everyone was afraid."

He laughed bitterly.

"My whole life was controlled by people who were afraid."

Evelyn wiped her tears.

"Your father wanted an heir."

"Thomas wanted a name."

She looked at Grant.

"I wanted a son."

Grant froze.

"What?"

Evelyn continued.

"When Adrian told me I could have a child who carried certain traits..."

She stopped.

"I believed I was doing something good."

Rachel couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"You created your own child as an experiment."

Evelyn looked devastated.

"I didn't know what he would become."

Michael laughed coldly.

"Nobody ever does."

Evelyn finally revealed the part she had hidden.

The part even Adrian Hayes didn't want known.

After Grant was born, Evelyn began noticing something.

Adrian was not satisfied.

He wasn't interested in raising a child.

He was interested in measuring one.

Every month.

Every year.

Every illness.

Every achievement.

Everything about Grant was recorded.

"He watched you like you were a science project."

Evelyn looked at Grant.

"And I allowed it."

Grant looked away.

The pain in his face was unbearable.

"Did you love me?"

Evelyn immediately answered.

"Yes."

"Then why?"

She couldn't answer.

Because there was no answer that could repair it.

Michael placed another file on the table.

"This isn't everything."

Everyone looked at him.

"There is more."

Rachel frowned.

"What more?"

Michael opened the folder.

Inside were financial records.

Payments.

Transfers.

Names.

The money trail.

Rachel followed the documents.

Then stopped.

"What is this?"

Michael looked at Grant.

"Your father didn't just know about Hayes."

A pause.

"He funded him."

Grant stared.

"Thomas?"

Michael nodded.

"The Bennett family paid for the research."

Rachel felt anger rising again.

"So this wasn't one man's obsession."

"No."

Michael looked at the files.

"It was a family business."

That evening, Rachel sat alone.

Too much had happened.

Too many truths.

Too many people had betrayed her.

Grant found her outside.

"You hate me."

Rachel looked at him.

The question surprised her.

"Why would you think that?"

"Because every secret started with my family."

Rachel sighed.

"Grant."

He sat beside her.

"I brought you into this."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You were trapped in it too."

He looked at her.

"I should have told you."

"Yes."

The honesty hurt.

"But you were scared."

He nodded.

"And I was wrong."

A pause.

"I should have chosen you."

Rachel looked away.

Because that was the wound that had never healed.

Not the clinic.

Not Evelyn.

Not Hayes.

Grant's silence.

"You let me stand alone."

"I know."

"And I needed you."

His eyes filled.

"I know."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Grant said:

"I want to fix this."

Rachel looked at him.

"How?"

He answered:

"By telling Maddie the truth when she's ready."

The next morning, Detective Harris called.

His voice was urgent.

"Mrs. Bennett."

Rachel immediately knew.

"What happened?"

"We found something at Hayes' facility."

"What?"

"A hidden archive."

"About Maddie?"

"No."

A pause.

"About you."

Rachel felt cold.

"What about me?"

The detective hesitated.

"We found records from before your birth."

Rachel stood.

"What kind of records?"

His answer changed everything.

"Medical records showing your mother was part of Adrian Hayes' research."

Rachel closed her eyes.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

Another pause.

"And there's something else."

"What?"

"The records show Adrian Hayes knew you before you met Grant."

Rachel froze.

"That's impossible."

Detective Harris lowered his voice.

"Mrs. Bennett..."

A pause.

"According to the records, Adrian Hayes selected you as Grant Bennett's future wife twenty years ago."

Rachel stopped breathing.

"What?"

The detective continued:

"He didn't just create Maddie."

"He didn't just create Grant."

"He planned your entire family."

Rachel stared into nothing.

Because the nightmare had changed again.

May you like

This was no longer about a hidden bloodline.

It was about a life that may never have belonged to her.
