CHAPTER 2-The Truth Hidden in Five Years of Silence

Rachel did not sleep that night.
She sat in the darkness of her bedroom, staring at the ceiling while the world around her remained completely still.
Beside her, Grant slept.
Or at least he pretended to.
Rachel knew him too well.
She knew the way his breathing changed when he was hiding something.
She knew the way his hands tightened when he was afraid.
And tonight, Grant Bennett was terrified.
The fertility clinic's phone call played in her mind again and again.
"The genetic material used during your treatment may not have belonged to the donor listed in your file."
Those words had destroyed the one thing Rachel believed was unbreakable.
The truth.
For five years, she had endured Evelyn's accusations because she trusted that at least she and Grant shared the same secret.
A painful secret.
A private secret.
But their secret.
Now she wasn't sure anymore.
She slowly turned her head.
"Grant."
His eyes opened immediately.
Too quickly.
Rachel noticed.
"You were awake."
He remained silent.
"How long have you known?"
His expression changed.
A small movement.
A tiny hesitation.
But Rachel saw it.
"Known what?"
She sat up.
"Don't do that."
Grant looked away.
"Rachel."
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
But there was anger beneath it.
"I spent five years defending you."
"I know."
"I let your mother think the worst thing about me."
Grant swallowed.
"I know."
"I let people whisper about my daughter."
His eyes closed.
"Rachel..."
"And now I receive a call saying the clinic records might be wrong, and your first reaction is to look scared?"
Silence.
The silence answered before he did.
Rachel felt her heart sink.
"What happened?"
Grant didn't speak.
She got out of bed.
"What happened, Grant?"
"I don't know."
"That's a lie."
He looked at her.
And for the first time in years, Rachel saw something she had never seen before.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Fear.
"There was something wrong with the clinic."
Rachel froze.
"What does that mean?"
Grant stood slowly.
"It means Evergreen Fertility Center wasn't as clean as everyone thought."
"How do you know?"
Another silence.
Rachel whispered:
"How do you know?"
Grant looked down.
And that was when Rachel understood.
The truth was much bigger than a medical mistake.
"You knew."
"No."
"You knew something was wrong."
"Not like this."
"Then explain."
Grant walked toward the window.
The man who had always protected everyone suddenly looked like someone who needed protection himself.
"My father knew Dr. Adrian Hayes."
Rachel frowned.
"What?"
"The doctor who handled our case."
She stared at him.
"What does your father have to do with our fertility treatment?"
Grant didn't answer.
Rachel's voice became colder.
"Grant."
"My father invested in the clinic years ago."
The room went silent.
Rachel felt sick.
"Your father invested..."
"Yes."
"And you never told me?"
"I didn't think it mattered."
She laughed once.
But there was no humor.
"Nothing about this matters, does it?"
"Rachel."
"No."
She pointed toward the hallway.
"Our daughter is asleep in the next room."
Grant looked toward Maddie's bedroom.
"She is our daughter."
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
"Then why did you spend five years letting everyone question that?"
He had no answer.
Because there was none.
The next morning, Rachel drove to Evergreen Fertility Center alone.
She didn't tell Grant.
She didn't tell anyone.
She needed answers before more lies reached her.
The building looked exactly as she remembered.
Modern.
Clean.
Professional.
Almost too perfect.
A receptionist smiled.
"Can I help you?"
Rachel placed a folder on the desk.
"I'm Rachel Bennett."
The receptionist's smile disappeared.
Only for a moment.
But again, Rachel noticed.
"I need to speak with Dr. Morgan."
"She's unavailable."
"Then make her available."
The receptionist hesitated.
Rachel leaned forward.
"My daughter's records were compromised."
That changed everything.
Ten minutes later, Rachel was sitting across from Dr. Morgan.
The woman looked exhausted.
Like someone who had not slept in days.
"We knew you would come."
Rachel stared at her.
"Who is we?"
The doctor avoided her eyes.
"The clinic."
"What happened?"
Dr. Morgan opened a file.
"We conducted an internal review after discovering inconsistencies in our archived records."
"What inconsistencies?"
She pushed a document forward.
Rachel looked down.
At first, she didn't understand.
Then she saw the date.
The year Maddie was conceived.
The donor number.
The genetic code.
Something was different.
"This isn't the donor we selected."
"No."
Rachel looked up.
"Then who is it?"
Dr. Morgan hesitated.
"We don't know."
The answer felt impossible.
"You don't know?"
"The original records were altered."
Rachel's fingers tightened around the paper.
"Altered by who?"
The doctor looked toward the window.
Then quietly said:
"We believe someone inside the clinic changed them."
Rachel's heart raced.
"Why?"
Dr. Morgan didn't answer immediately.
Because the next words were worse.
"Because Maddie's DNA matches another group of children."
Rachel froze.
"How many?"
The doctor looked at the file.
"Twenty-three."
The room became silent.
"Twenty-three children?"
"Yes."
"All from the same donor?"
Dr. Morgan nodded.
"But that's impossible."
"Why?"
"Because the donor listed in your file was never approved for that many pregnancies."
Rachel felt cold.
"Then who was the donor?"
Dr. Morgan looked at her.
"We are still trying to determine that."
Rachel stood.
"No."
The doctor looked confused.
"No?"
"I don't want guesses."
Rachel picked up the file.
"I want the truth."
Dr. Morgan's expression changed.
Because she knew something.
Something she had not said.
"Mrs. Bennett."
Rachel stopped.
"What?"
"There is one more thing."
Rachel turned.
The doctor opened another folder.
Inside was an old photograph.
A photograph that looked decades old.
Rachel stared at it.
Because she recognized one person immediately.
Evelyn Bennett.
Young.
Standing outside a clinic.
Beside a man.
Dr. Adrian Hayes.
The same doctor.
The same man connected to Maddie's impossible DNA problem.
Rachel slowly looked up.
"Why does my mother-in-law know this doctor?"
Dr. Morgan's face became pale.
"Because Dr. Hayes wasn't only connected to your fertility treatment."
Rachel waited.
"He treated the Bennett family for more than thirty years."
Rachel's heart stopped.
"What does that mean?"
The doctor whispered:
"It means your daughter's mistake may not have started five years ago."
Rachel looked back at the photograph.
And suddenly she understood.
May you like
The mystery wasn't about who Maddie's father was.
The mystery was why someone had spent decades hiding the truth about the Bennett bloodline.
