CHAPTER 6-The Child They Created

Rachel watched the video again.
Then again.
She kept hoping something would change.
A missing sentence.
A misunderstood expression.
A hidden explanation.
Anything that would make the nightmare less real.
But every time, the same words remained.
"Grant Bennett is the first successful result."
The sentence haunted her.
Because it changed everything.
Grant wasn't simply a man caught in a family secret.
He was the reason the secret existed.
Rachel sat at the kitchen table with the laptop open in front of her.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
For the first time in five years, she didn't feel like she was protecting her family.
She felt like she was protecting her daughter from her family.
Grant found her there at sunrise.
He immediately knew something was wrong.
"What happened?"
Rachel didn't answer.
She turned the laptop toward him.
The video was paused on Dr. Hayes' face.
Grant stared.
Then he saw himself mentioned.
His expression collapsed.
"Where did you get this?"
Rachel's voice was quiet.
"Someone sent it."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Grant watched the screen.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
"Play it."
Rachel pressed the button.
The video continued.
Evelyn looked terrified.
"What are you asking me to do?"
Dr. Hayes smiled.
"You already agreed."
"I agreed to help my family."
"And you did."
Hayes placed a folder on the desk.
"Thomas will never know the details."
Evelyn looked at the folder.
"What about the other children?"
Hayes' expression became cold.
"They are irrelevant."
Rachel felt disgust.
Grant looked away.
The video continued.
Then Evelyn asked the question that made both of them freeze.
"What happens if Grant finds out?"
Hayes answered calmly.
"He won't."
"How can you be sure?"
"Because he will spend his entire life believing he is a Bennett."
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Grant stood up.
He walked to the window.
Rachel watched him.
She expected anger.
Instead, she saw devastation.
"My whole life..."
His voice was barely audible.
"My whole life was built on something I didn't choose."
Rachel softened slightly.
"Grant."
He turned.
"Do you know what it feels like to question yourself?"
She didn't answer.
"Every time my father looked disappointed in me, I thought I wasn't enough."
His eyes filled.
"I thought I wasn't a real Bennett."
Rachel swallowed.
"Grant..."
"And now I find out I wasn't."
The pain in his voice was different from anything Rachel had heard before.
This wasn't pride.
This was identity.
They decided to meet Michael.
Not because they trusted him.
But because he was the only person who seemed willing to tell the truth.
They met at a quiet park outside the city.
Michael arrived carrying another folder.
"You saw the video."
Rachel nodded.
"Who sent it?"
Michael sat down.
"I did."
Grant immediately stood.
"You?"
Michael looked at him.
"Someone needed to finally know."
"You could have told me years ago."
Michael laughed bitterly.
"Would you have believed me?"
Grant said nothing.
Because he knew the answer.
Michael opened the folder.
Inside were medical records.
Hundreds of pages.
"I spent twenty years collecting these."
Rachel looked through them.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
Children.
All connected.
Then she noticed something.
One file was marked differently.
"Project Bennett."
Rachel looked up.
"What is this?"
Michael's face changed.
"That is what Hayes called it."
Grant picked up the file.
Inside were notes.
Research.
Genetic analysis.
And photographs.
Rachel turned the page.
Then stopped.
Because one photograph showed a baby.
A newborn child.
With a handwritten note.
Subject One: Grant Bennett.
Her stomach tightened.
Another page.
Subject Two: Michael Hayes.
Rachel looked at Michael.
"Your name..."
Michael nodded.
"I was born Michael Hayes."
The room went quiet.
"Thomas Bennett adopted you."
Michael nodded.
"He wanted the Bennett name attached to the experiment."
Rachel looked at Grant.
"And you?"
Michael looked at him.
"You were different."
"Why?"
"Because Thomas and Evelyn didn't adopt you."
Grant froze.
"What?"
Michael looked away.
"Because you were born."
The words were impossible.
Rachel stared.
"Born?"
Michael nodded.
"Adrian Hayes used his own genetic material."
A pause.
"And Evelyn was the mother."
Grant couldn't breathe.
"No."
Michael looked at him.
"You weren't created in a clinic."
"You were born naturally."
Rachel felt the shock hit her.
Everything was changing again.
Grant wasn't the son of Thomas Bennett.
He was the son of Adrian Hayes.
The doctor who had manipulated generations of people.
The man who had created dozens of children.
That night, Grant confronted Evelyn.
Rachel followed.
She needed to see the truth in Evelyn's face.
When Evelyn opened the door, she immediately knew.
"What did you find?"
Grant stared.
"You knew."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Grant..."
"You knew about Hayes."
Silence.
"You knew about Michael."
Evelyn looked down.
"You knew everything."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I was trying to protect you."
Rachel stepped forward.
"Protect him?"
Her voice was cold.
"You allowed everyone to believe I cheated on him."
Evelyn looked ashamed.
"I didn't know what to do."
"No."
Rachel shook her head.
"You knew exactly what to do."
Evelyn looked at Maddie's photo on the wall.
"I was afraid."
"Of what?"
Evelyn whispered:
"That history would repeat itself."
Rachel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Evelyn sat down.
And for the first time, the woman who had spent five years judging Rachel looked completely broken.
"Because Adrian Hayes never stopped."
Grant froze.
"What?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"He continued the experiment."
The room became silent.
"He created children for decades."
Rachel whispered:
"Why?"
Evelyn looked at her.
"Because he believed he could create the perfect family."
Grant's face turned pale.
"And Maddie?"
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"She was never supposed to happen."
Rachel's heart stopped.
"What are you saying?"
Evelyn looked toward them.
"The donor used for Maddie's treatment wasn't random."
A pause.
"It was chosen."
Grant stepped closer.
"Chosen by who?"
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"By Adrian Hayes."
Rachel felt cold.
"But why?"
Evelyn looked at Grant.
Then at Maddie's picture.
"Because Adrian knew something about your husband."
Silence.
"What?"
Evelyn whispered:
"Grant isn't just one of his children."
A long pause.
"He is the only one who survived."
Rachel stared.
"Survived what?"
Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.
"The experiment."
Before anyone could ask another question, Evelyn's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And all color disappeared from her face.
Grant noticed.
"Who is it?"
Evelyn slowly turned the phone around.
The name on the screen was impossible.
DR. ADRIAN HAYES
But that wasn't the worst part.
Because underneath the name was a message preview.
May you like
Three words.
"I know everything."
