CHAPTER 17-Michael's Confession

The room went completely silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone had spent weeks believing Michael Bennett was the one person who understood their pain.
The abandoned child.
The forgotten brother.
The person who had spent decades searching for the truth.
But now he stood in front of them and admitted something impossible.
He had not only known Adrian Hayes.
He had helped him.
Rachel stared at him.
"Say it again."
Michael looked down.
"I was his assistant."
Grant's face changed.
Not anger at first.
Disbelief.
The kind of disbelief that comes when reality becomes too painful to accept.
"You lied to us."
Michael didn't defend himself.
"Yes."
"You used us."
"Yes."
Grant stepped forward.
"Then everything?"
Michael looked at him.
"The files."
"The information."
"Finding Hayes."
"All of it?"
Michael closed his eyes.
"Not everything."
Rachel laughed bitterly.
"How convenient."
Michael accepted the anger.
"I did help him."
A pause.
"But I also tried to stop him."
Nobody believed him.
Not yet.
Detective Harris immediately ordered Michael to step away.
But Michael didn't run.
He didn't fight.
He simply sat down.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
"You deserve the truth."
Rachel crossed her arms.
"We have heard that before."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
He looked at Grant.
"I was fifteen when I learned what I was."
Grant remained silent.
Michael continued.
"Unlike you, I wasn't protected."
"My entire childhood was spent around Hayes."
"He didn't raise me like a son."
"He raised me like evidence."
Rachel watched him carefully.
"Then why help him?"
Michael looked at his hands.
"Because when someone controls your entire world, you don't know how to escape."
Michael explained.
After discovering his identity, he tried to run.
But Hayes found him.
He gave him a choice.
Help with the research.
Or lose everything.
His freedom.
His identity.
His future.
At first, Michael believed he could secretly learn enough to destroy Hayes.
But years passed.
And something changed.
He became part of the machine he hated.
"I convinced myself I was only collecting information."
Michael whispered.
"But every file I organized represented a person."
Rachel looked away.
"And you still did it."
"Yes."
The honesty hurt more.
Grant stared at him.
"Why come to us?"
Michael looked at Maddie's drawing.
"Because of her."
Rachel immediately stepped closer to her daughter.
"Don't say her name."
Michael nodded.
"I understand."
He looked devastated.
"When I saw Maddie's file, I realized Hayes had gone further than ever before."
"What was different?"
Michael answered:
"Before Maddie, the children were experiments."
A pause.
"But Maddie was his proof."
Rachel felt cold.
"Proof of what?"
Michael looked at Grant.
"That two separate genetic lines could merge successfully."
Grant understood.
"Mine and Rachel's."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
The room remained tense.
Then Evelyn spoke.
"I knew."
Everyone looked at her.
Rachel felt anger rising again.
"You knew everything."
Evelyn shook her head.
"Not everything."
"Enough."
Evelyn looked at Michael.
"I knew Adrian was using him."
Michael looked away.
"You never helped me."
Evelyn's face broke.
"I was afraid."
Michael laughed.
"Everyone was."
He looked at Grant.
"That's the Bennett family motto."
Then Michael revealed the final part.
The reason Hayes had been so confident.
The reason he never feared being caught.
"He has another copy."
Grant frowned.
"Another copy of what?"
"The research."
Detective Harris looked serious.
"Where?"
Michael hesitated.
Rachel noticed.
"You know."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
"Where?"
Michael looked toward the city.
"Under Bennett Industries."
Everyone froze.
Grant whispered:
"My father's company?"
Michael nodded.
"Thomas Bennett didn't just fund Hayes."
A pause.
"He built the system that protected him."
They went to Bennett Industries that night.
The company headquarters stood empty after midnight.
But the old security systems were still active.
Michael guided them through hidden corridors.
A place nobody knew existed.
Behind a wall.
A hidden elevator.
A secret floor.
Rachel felt sick.
Because this wasn't a laboratory.
It was an archive.
A place designed to preserve secrets.
Inside were thousands of files.
Every person connected to Hayes.
Every child.
Every family.
Every lie.
Grant found his own file.
Then Michael's.
Then Rachel's.
Then Maddie's.
But there was one file different from the others.
No name.
Only a code.
SUBJECT ZERO
Rachel looked at Michael.
"What is that?"
Michael's face turned pale.
"I don't know."
Grant opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A newborn baby.
And a handwritten note.
The first successful natural birth.
Rachel looked closer.
Then she stopped.
Because she recognized the hospital bracelet.
The date.
The name.
The baby wasn't Grant.
It wasn't Michael.
It wasn't Maddie.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been alive all along.
The photograph showed:
Rachel Carter.
Nobody spoke.
Rachel felt the room spin.
"No."
Grant grabbed the file.
"This can't be right."
Michael whispered:
"Hayes always said there was one subject he could never fully understand."
Rachel stared at the photograph.
"Myself?"
Michael nodded slowly.
"Yes."
The hidden archive suddenly came alive.
A computer screen turned on.
A message appeared.
Not from Hayes.
Not from Michael.
From someone else.
"Rachel, if you found this, then Adrian failed."
Her breath stopped.
Because she knew the handwriting.
It was her father's.
The message continued.
"I need you to know the truth before he tells you his version."
A pause.
Then:
"You were never Hayes' experiment."
Rachel's eyes filled.
The next line appeared.
"You were the person who escaped it."
The screen changed.
A final document opened.
A birth record.
A genetic report.
And one shocking revelation:
Rachel Carter was not created by Adrian Hayes.
She was created to stop him.
Rachel stared at the screen.
May you like
Because the person she thought had been controlled her entire life...
May have been the only person who was free.
