CHAPTER 5-The Man Who Was Erased

For five years, Rachel had wondered what kind of secret could make a family destroy itself.

She thought it was an affair.

She thought it was a betrayal.

She thought it was a mistake made inside a fertility clinic.

She never imagined the answer would be standing in front of her house.

A man everyone believed was dead.

Michael Bennett.

Grant couldn't speak.

He simply stared.

Like his entire childhood had just walked back through the door.

Michael looked older than the photograph Rachel had seen.

His hair was touched with gray.

There were deep lines around his eyes.

Not the lines of age.

The lines of someone who had spent years carrying anger.

"You don't recognize me."

Grant finally found his voice.

"I was told you were dead."

Michael smiled.

A painful smile.

"That's what they wanted you to believe."

Rachel stood behind Grant.

She studied Michael carefully.

She expected hatred.

She expected revenge.

Instead, she saw something else.

Pain.

"You need to leave."

Grant's voice was low.

Michael looked at him.

"Still protecting them."

Rachel noticed the words.

Them.

Not him.

Them.

"Who are you talking about?"

Michael looked at Rachel.

"You really don't know anything, do you?"

Grant stepped forward.

"Don't involve her."

Michael laughed softly.

"That's the problem with you, Grant."

"What?"

"You always think you can protect people by keeping them in the dark."

The sentence hit harder than Michael probably realized.

Because Rachel had said almost the same thing.

They sat in the living room thirty minutes later.

Rachel didn't know why she allowed him inside.

Maybe because she needed answers.

Maybe because she was tired of secrets.

Michael placed an old envelope on the table.

"This belongs to you."

Grant stared.

"What is it?"

"Something your father never wanted you to find."

Rachel looked at Grant.

"Open it."

He hesitated.

Then he picked it up.

Inside was a medical record.

A birth certificate.

And a letter.

Grant read silently.

Then his face changed.

Rachel watched the color leave him.

"What does it say?"

Grant couldn't answer.

Michael spoke.

"It says your father wasn't Thomas Bennett."

The room became completely silent.

Rachel felt her heart race.

"Then who was?"

Michael looked at Grant.

"Adrian Hayes."

Rachel froze.

The fertility doctor.

The man connected to Maddie.

The man in the photograph with Evelyn.

"No."

Grant shook his head.

"No."

Michael leaned back.

"Yes."

Rachel looked between them.

"You're saying Dr. Hayes was your biological father?"

Michael nodded.

"Mine."

A pause.

"And yours."

Grant stepped backward.

"No."

Michael continued.

"Thomas Bennett raised us because he made a deal."

"What deal?"

Michael looked at Rachel.

"A deal to protect the Bennett name."

The story Michael told them sounded impossible.

But every piece connected.

Forty years earlier, Thomas Bennett had discovered his wife, Eleanor, could not have children.

The family name was important.

The Bennett legacy mattered.

So Thomas went to his close friend.

Dr. Adrian Hayes.

A brilliant genetic specialist.

A man obsessed with heredity.

According to Michael, Thomas and Hayes created an arrangement.

Hayes would provide genetic material.

Thomas would raise the children.

The Bennett name would continue.

Nobody would ever know.

Except the plan changed.

Because Dr. Hayes didn't stop with one child.

He began collecting genetic samples.

Creating pregnancies.

Building what he called "a superior family line."

Michael discovered the truth as a teenager.

When he confronted Thomas, everything fell apart.

Thomas threatened him.

Forced him away.

Changed records.

Made the world believe Michael had died.

And then he raised Grant as if nothing happened.

Rachel looked at Grant.

"Did you know?"

Grant shook his head.

"I swear I didn't."

Michael looked at him.

"That's because they protected you."

Rachel frowned.

"Who is they?"

Michael looked toward the old photograph on the table.

"Evelyn."

Rachel felt cold.

That night, Rachel couldn't sleep.

She sat beside Maddie's bed.

Watching her daughter breathe.

Five years.

Five years of wondering whether she belonged.

And now the truth was even more complicated.

Maddie belonged.

But she belonged to a family built on lies.

Rachel touched her daughter's hair.

"I will never let anyone make you feel unwanted again."

Behind her, someone spoke.

"I heard that."

Rachel turned.

Grant stood in the doorway.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Grant walked inside.

"I was wrong."

Rachel looked away.

"Grant..."

"No."

He sat beside her.

"I was wrong for being ashamed."

Silence.

"I spent my entire life believing my value came from my blood."

His voice cracked.

"But Maddie taught me something."

Rachel looked at him.

"What's that?"

"Being a father isn't about genetics."

A tear fell down his face.

"It's about who stays."

Rachel wanted to believe him.

She did.

But another thought remained.

"Grant."

He looked up.

"Why was Evelyn connected to Dr. Hayes?"

His expression changed.

And Rachel knew.

There was another secret.

"What?"

Grant hesitated.

"Because my mother knew."

"Knew what?"

Grant looked toward Maddie's room.

"She knew who the donor was."

Rachel felt a chill.

"And she let everyone think I betrayed you?"

Grant closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The next morning, Rachel received a package.

No return address.

Inside was a single flash drive.

And a note.

Three words.

"Watch the video."

Rachel opened the file.

The screen showed an old recording.

The date was twenty-five years earlier.

A young Dr. Adrian Hayes sat in an office.

Across from him was Evelyn Bennett.

Rachel stopped breathing.

Because she recognized the room.

It was the same fertility clinic.

The same place where Maddie was conceived.

Hayes looked at Evelyn.

"We need to continue."

Evelyn looked nervous.

"I don't know if this is right anymore."

Hayes smiled.

"You knew the arrangement."

Evelyn whispered:

"But the children are growing up."

Hayes leaned closer.

"That is exactly why we must protect the bloodline."

Rachel felt sick.

Then Evelyn said something that changed everything.

"But what about Grant?"

Hayes looked at her.

"He is the most important one."

Rachel froze.

The video continued.

Hayes smiled.

"Because Grant Bennett is the first successful result."

Rachel stopped the recording.

Her hands were shaking.

The mystery had just become something much darker.

Grant wasn't just connected to the secret.

He was the center of it.

And somewhere inside the Bennett family history was a truth nobody wanted discovered.

Because if Grant was the first successful result...

May you like

Then Maddie wasn't an accident.

She was part of a plan.
